In 1992 Gillo Pontecorvo and his son went back to Algeria to do a reevaluation documentary. The result is a somewhat bitter product, Return to Algiers. The war of independence reenacted in Battle of Algiers (1965) had given rise to a new conflict between a corrupt, Ba’athist-style regime and a backward Islamist party. The new documentary is as honest in its images and message as the first film, a testament to the artistic integrity of Pontecorvo as an independent Marxist observer of world processes.—Eds
