The extraordinary film by Carlos Diegues, Bye Bye Brasil (1979), a major figure in Brazil’s Cine Novo movement, chronicles the adventures of a small third-rate troupe of itinerant entertainers as they criss-cross the backlands of Brazil right at the moment the country modernizes before their eyes, relegating them to obsolescence. Humor, drama, joy, and a fascinating look at another culture have seldom come in a more fetching package. The greatest surprise is delivered in the peaceful, civilized manner the foursome handles their most intimate interactions. Unfortunately, only those who understand Portuguese or Spanish will appreciate the film fully. Saudade!
