The hunter who baited, shot, skinned and beheaded a beloved, majestic lion known as “Cecil” during a Zimbabwe safari is an American dentist from Minnesota. (New York Daily News)
[dropcap]P[/dropcap]eople are justifiably outraged, now that the Big Media—at last!—has covered the crime of one of the many degenerates who roam the world murdering animals for egotistical pleasure.
Walter Palmer (left, with another victim) —the now notorious Minnesota dentist, and a bow hunter, to boot, like that other scoundrel, Ted Nugent—may have killed a lion designated as a special animal, the “Lassie” of the wildlife park, an emblem of Zimbabwe, but in truth the crime of “sport hunting” is really indefensible. Whether at home or in Africa, the taking of animal lives for kicks, indulged by stupid, revoltingly selfish and morally bankrupt people—a bunch that includes European princes, Arab sheiks, American millionaires, other lesser celebrities (like Donald Trump’s sons), and even the local plumber—is generically unjustifiable. Certainly and doubly so at a time when the human species has triggered a global devastation of nature that scientists properly qualify as a threat to the planet’s life-sustaining systems, and the largest anthropogenic die-off of animal species in history. (And don’t get me going about animal factories).
In a world falling apart, the sociopathic selfishness of Walter Palmer, and the corrupting insolence of money, deprives us all of the comforting company of a magnificent creature…
[dropcap]C[/dropcap]ecil deserves to be mourned, and not easily forgotten, but the issue is far larger than that. No lion, no elephant, no animal should be killed for “sport,” for adornment, for “traditional” medicine, or any other stupid or frivolous human purpose. This should be established fact in any society that claims membership in the club of civilised nations. And let me make something perfectly clear: Many voices are complaining that Cecil was “illegally killed,” which adds to the trouble in which Palmer now finds himself, but the fact remains that Cecil was assassinated within a cultural framework in which such killings are facilitated and encouraged not only by an entire industry of hunting guides and outriggers, arms manufacturers and hunting lobbies, but by national governments themselves, in the name of “conservation.” The argument is that such expensive licenses to kill prize animals allow these poor countries to maintain wider conservation efforts. I always thought this argument logically bankrupt at its core, the idea that in order to save some victims we must allow the killers to indulge their base tendencies. If you want to help a species, why not just donate the money and not kill? Have any of these lowlifes ever heard of cameras? While on the topic we should also mention that no one points out that the sum total of such revenues, representing all this carnage, just in the case of Africa, is less than the price tag of a few F-16s, a grotesque misallocation of resources that only underscores the profound disease afflicting international society at all levels.
Below, a video roundup of reaction to the news, an encouraging response that proves what we have said countless times, that the squandering of mass media time on idiocies and lies, while real issues go begging, is a crime of a different sort, but nonetheless a crime deserving of serious attention. And that people, properly informed, usually react with decency and compassion.
Where would we be if the world had a responsible, thorough, and properly moral media? Certainly not in the royal mess we inhabit.

FACT TO REMEMBER:
IF THE WESTERN MEDIA HAD ITS PRIORITIES IN ORDER AND ACTUALLY INFORMED, EDUCATED AND UPLIFTED THE MASSES INSTEAD OF SHILLING FOR A GLOBAL EMPIRE OF ENDLESS WARS, OUTRAGEOUS ECONOMIC INEQUALITY, AND DEEPENING DEVASTATION OF NATURE AND THE ANIMAL WORLD, HORRORS LIKE THESE WOULD HAVE BEEN ELIMINATED MANY YEARS, PERHAPS DECADES AGO. EVERY SINGLE DAY SOCIAL BACKWARDNESS COLLECTS ITS OWN INNUMERABLE VICTIMS.

We have known about and fought against this vermin all our lives, but only recently have the big media begun to speak about the subject, and you can see immediately the effect. That’s why I constantly harp about the sheer waste that mainstream media time represents in most cases. To squander a precious resource like this on idiotic and obsessive reporting on celebrities, innumerable stupid shows, sports bullcrap and the like, not to mention countless hours of disinformation is a crime that needs to be recognized for what it is. Media barons and their top henchmen and hacks should stand… Read more »
Dr. Palmer, claiming to be an ethical hunter (which in itself is an oxymoron), an excellent bowhunter/marksman (impossible with recorded statistics with over 50% wounding rates), knew exactly what he was doing with a $50,000 plus bribe. One need look no further than his less than stellar hunting/poaching background with a felony status in the US which leads to an obvious question: How can a felon be allowed to own dangerous, lethal weapons?
The myth of the Great White Hunter lives on… I would add Christian to the title. For it is Christian dominion which has encouraged those in need of an ego boost or a libido fix to take up big game hunting. After all if you arent feeling very important or potent, then what better way to reassert your power and potency then by killing a majestic powerful animal. then call it sport. It is not a sport when the victim has not volunteered to participate. It is an illusion of power for those who despite the bravado are really quite… Read more »
I hardly know what to say about yet another soulless, heartless, mindless and cruel human murdering a noble and defenseless being who has every right to live. We have become a society that allows the torture and murder of the innocent; Is this dentist a sociopath? or is he just another human who has bought into the dominion model of ‘us and them’? Do we humans really think we are higher than Nature? Look around you, can you not see we are losing our home, Mother Earth; all due to the false and selfish idea of entitlement? If we do… Read more »
You ask an important question:
“Is this dentist a sociopath? or is he just another human who has bought into the dominion model of ‘us and them’?”
It is easy to write off big game hunters as sociopaths, when in fact they represent the mainstream view of animals, as presented by dominion. Hunting is moral according to the covenant which grants man dominion over the animals.
Perhaps this big game hunter is suffering from a dominion induced pathology – the delusional belief that he above rather than part of the natural order.
Thank you, Patrice, for this masterful and articulate piece. I’ve shared it on my Facebook page. The propagandist criminals have managed to make a mockery of our electoral system. Having an ignorant electorate makes it so easy to create a Congress of fools and criminals. And, it’s not only a US problem, as you can see the fascists manipulate the populace in many countries across the globe. And, the current administration is no better than the last one. We have people appointed to fish and game commissions and to the US Fish and Wildlife Service who are plain evil. They… Read more »
Val, I’d like to remind you that in India, Wilderness Services works to protect and rescue animals, not to regulate every manner or cruelty, from culls to hunting and fishing. Culls are against the law in India. While there is much political corruption in India, as far as care for animals is concerned, government organizations do their part for animals to insure they are not harmed. I don’t think we can leave two very different views of animals out of consideration for the problems we face in the USA. Ahimsa in India is geared towards appreciating the inherent value of… Read more »
Gender, Patriarchy, and All That Jazz
The best article I have read as yet on the return of ‘ladies and gents’ and how much we need total anarchism as an antidote to the old gender neo-straightjacket ! The macho killing of the lion, the fearful smile of Hillary Clinton, all speak to the return to the male order in this recidivist society.
