MUST WATCH: HBO’s VICE focuses on human addiction to meat and the oncoming global drought

Two tightly interwoven global catastrophes—entirely man-made (“anthropogenic” as the educated aseptic term has it) are now facing human civilization: meat addiction and global warming.

Both disasters stem from human choices; there’s nothing inevitable about their genesis. Global warming, a result of climate change (to which meat eating has contributed and is contributing powerfully, as much or more than vehicular emissions) is in reality a cluster of symptoms among which rapid desertification and drought appear to be the gravest.

This VICE episode is eloquent in laying out the case for action on both fields, but, being the product of a huge corporate media conglomerate, it does not dig into the actual socioeconomic and political causes of the current dilemma. Basically we are in this pickle because capitalism still controls much of the governmental levers in the Western bloc, capitalism is on a collision course with nature, and the main capitalist nation in the world is also its biggest and most irresponsible superpower: the United States. Washington’s nefarious influence before and after WW2 has contaminated scores of nations across the globe. This sorry fact has in turn given rise to a set of illegitimate figureheads whose main task is to do the bidding of powerful, entrenched plutocratic interests that are now literally murdering the planet. In the process these forces are also subjecting living nature—our fellow creatures— to an incalculable degree of suffering.—PG
