Fidel Castro dies, truth and imperialist lies continue to battle over his legacy
PATRICE GREANVILLE
The rest of the press, represented by many organizations and voices in the alternative media, and organs of mass information existing in nations which enjoy a more robust diversity of public opinion, have for the most part hailed Fidel Castro as the hero he was and the Cuban revolution as one of the noblest examples of human accomplishment in an age ruled by hypocrisy, cynicism and rapacity.
Below we present examples of the first, “nuanced” approach, (courtesy of CBS, ABC & NBC) to the problem faced by the Empire’s propagandists when faced with the necessity to describe the life of a political figure whom the world came to admire, love and follow.
The second set of videos represents the truthful account of Fidel’s impact on world politics. Analysis follows each video.
Note that in both videos above CBS assumes at first what appears to be a serious, somber and respectful tone, only to later introduce a number of powerful negatives cancelling the initial impression. A classic case of the use of half-truths to gain the trust of the news consumer only to deliver venom.
(1B) The ABC touch
ABC presents in these two clips a less venomous account of Fidel’s life than CBS, but the anti-communist bias is still deep and pervasive. In general all corporate media detested and defamed Fidel and the Cuban revolution practically from inception, a class determined bias simply inevitable as long as mass media remain the private property of billionaires. In turn, this unspoken and always denied bias is energetically implemented by media hacks who crawl like vermin all over the machinery of capitalist communications. Decent people rarely inhabit the higher echelons of bourgeois media, whether they be on camera “talent”, producers, or top editors. And if they show any trace of consistent decency, or propensity to tell the truth, they are unceremoniously removed from their positions of influence.
Further facilitating this dreadful situation is the high social place that Big Media figures occupy in the bourgeois pecking order, effectively isolating them from real interactions with ordinary people. The brainwash that most Americans receive from cradle to grave makes adaptation to such conditions a seamless process. The upshot is that any sociologist who studies even cursorily the structure and socialization of US/Western media personnel will quickly find both appalling levels of political and historical ignorance reinforced by unapologetic careerism, a perfect storm when it comes to creating worthless anti-democratic journalism. No wonder then that American media are actually enablers, fully complicit in the empire’s most horrid crimes abroad—Nuremberg-class crimes, we should add— and a powerful, demonstrably hostile force toward any attempts at rectifying such criminality via political action at home.
(1C) NBC WEIGHS IN, via Andrea Mitchell
This particular clip is interesting because while correspondent Andrea Mitchell, a veteran journalist with an instinctively more mature and balanced approach to controversial news, struggles to transmit a bit of truth about Cuba’s reality, she is quickly “rectified” with a litany of “revolutionary crimes” by the New York desk, manned by Willie Geist, a fatuous young moron, probably on orders from the hidden producers, themselves the real enforcers of the company line on this type of subject. Indeed, no good thing can be left standing when it comes to denigrate an enemy of capitalism and US policy.
(1D) Fox News wields the hammer
To close, how Fox News, or rather Faux News, depicted the passing of Fidel. What else could we expect from a filthy tycoon like Rupert Murdoch?
The formula for lies here is again an old one: trot out a “witness” who will fill the air with lies lacking any historical context. In this case the witness is (and we are not even sure about that) the daughter of Cuban exiles, hence her claim “to have lived under the revolution”. Anyone with half a brain and an ounce of integrity would not use a Cuban gusano to explain the Cuban revolution to the perennially benighted American public, as exiles are not exactly the most impartial people in the world. Note how the blonde presenter seems to be struggling with her own appalling ignorance as the clip mercifully wraps up.
(2) The straightforward, more reliable approach. We include some videos in Spanish.
RIP Fidel Castro- The hero who took on US imperialism and won!
Pieces like these were not seen anywhere on the Big Media. Truth was therefore automatically relegated to the margins, to social media whose effective reach, while on the rise, is still not able to neutralize the poisoned spin served by the status quo apologists.
Muere Fidel Castro / R.I.P 1926 – 2016
