Russia’s Republic of Chechnya has undergone a revival after two military operations in its recent post-Soviet history. Today, the region is home one of the largest mosques in Europe, hosts international celebrities and even is trying its hand at high fashion. We explore this republic of contrasts to look at how the Chechen people have struck a balance between tradition and modernity.
Editor’s Note: While organized religion in the West, except for some smaller pockets of fundamentalism, has lost its ability to rule civic life and dictate intercultural norms, Islam, an inherently ultra-conservative, and proudly male chauvinist religion, insists on practicing Sharia in all aspects of life. That’s why while Chechnya struggles to modernize itself, and has made huge strides to bring social advancement to many, the influence of Islam weighs heavily, delaying progress for women, not to mention the gay population which is simply officially non-existent—and out of sight. We can only wish peace and good fortune to this tormented society; may its wounds heal in time, and may it find the formula to make the maximum number of people and other living creatures in its jurisdiction as happy as possible without foreign pressure or intervention.

If Chechnya is religion and tradition-bound, most Russians are precisely the opposite.
