GAITHER STEWART—Historians like to pose terrifying “what if questions”. Since, as it seems, Eisner’s ‘purity of purpose’, instead of engendering good, willy-nilly paved the way for evil, the question here is again spontaneity and chance: What if Eisner had not left Berlin for Munich? Would there still have been a Bavarian Socialist State? And if not, would Adolf Hitler still have been welcomed in aristocratic Catholic Bavaria to march with his men down the avenue past Munich’s great university? And would the history of twentieth century Europe have been different? Or would the same Hitler or another Hitler have emerged elsewhere?

Parting shot—a word from the editors In his zeal to prove to his antagonists in the War Party that he is as bloodthirsty as their champion, Hillary Clinton, and more manly than Barack Obama, Trump seems to have gone “play-crazy” -- acting like an unpredictable maniac in order to terrorize the Russians into forcing some kind of dramatic concessions from their Syrian allies, or risk Armageddon. However, the “play-crazy” gambit can only work when the leader is, in real life, a disciplined and intelligent actor, who knows precisely what actual boundaries must not be crossed. That ain’t Donald Trump -- a pitifully shallow and ill-disciplined man, emotionally handicapped by obscene privilege and cognitively crippled by white American chauvinism. By pushing Trump into a corner and demanding that he display his most bellicose self, or be ceaselessly mocked as a “puppet” and minion of Russia, a lesser power, the War Party and its media and clandestine services have created a perfect storm of mayhem that may consume us all.— Glen Ford, Editor in Chief, Black Agenda Report

The Best Definition of Donald Trump We Have Found
Brilliant and compassionate essay. Courage is what it takes to act for justice for those of us with enough food, but to make a revolution what it takes is a great deal of people who finally act only when they don’t have enough food. If there is enough food, for example where l live in Denmark, there is no need or thought of exercising courage, because acting for what is purely and simply right/ just results in loss of privileges and necessities like jobs. And you can end up in jail or even worse depending on how far fascism has… Read more »

Quote: You have to mistrust absolutists who demand specific answers, who demand yes or no, who prefer white to black, this to that, and use expressions like ‘in the final analysis’. That is a very sophisticated European thought, which is not reflected in much of US left discourse. But let us think about Charlotte Corday, the young woman who murdered the revolutionary Marat in his bath in 1793. There is a superb painting by the somewhat revolutionary Jacques David of the dead Marat in the Louvre museum. That act has as little reverberation as had the White Rose. It is… Read more »
