Who is "them"?
"Them" is the 0.00001% that owns just about everything worth owning in the US sphere of influence—from the megacorporations that gird the globe, to the media and the politicians, plus influencing much of the culture with their destructive point of view. All these wars and all these expenses accompanied by curtailment of desperately needed things in the US serve only the ruling plutocracy. Period.
