Addendum
The sociopathic pro-Israel Right goes after the Fake Left in wake of Iranian scientist assassination—who is more deranged (or unprincipled)?
APPALLING IMBECILITY, CONFUSION AND IGNORANCE WIN THE DAY.

The attack, as Maupin notes and we could expect, has been widely distorted by all factions of the ruling class, each for their own partisan reasons. The NYTimes in this case, though a leading member of the disinformation system of the West, and a certifiable pro-Israel organ (thus certainly no friend of Iran), chose to publish a tweet which packed a bit of truth and nuance about the situation. (See below). This was enough to detonate a veritable storm of vituperation in the Conservative/Trumpite/alt right "press", with some asking if the Times had not become now a propaganda organ for the Mullahs. The irrational hatred for Iran in this crowd is certainly virulent, which benefits Israel, of course, which in turn makes little sense when we realise that numerous voices in the "Conservative/right" movement are proud and often vociferous anti-semites. Politics in the US these days is so riddled with glaring contradictions and injected absurdities, there is so much intentional deceit and sheer imbecility, not to mention bad faith, that understanding what's really going on is virtually impossible. No wonder so many people don't know which way is North anymore. Consider this report filed by Leah Barkoukis, a features editor at Townhall.com and the ensuing commentary. Many of the Tweets could have been easily filed by Hasbara, or by people who are instinctively pro-Israel and easily swallow the "Iran is a chief sponsor of terrorism in the ME" line, disseminated by both Trump and his legions and the US disinformation machine. The upshot is anyhow a complete mess.

NYT Panned Over 'Absolutely Delusional' Tweet About Iranian Nuclear Scientist's Assassination

The New York Times was widely criticized for its tweet about the assassination of Iran’s top nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, leading critics to wonder if the paper of record had become "The New Mullah Times."

“Iranian officials, who have always maintained that their nuclear ambitions are for peaceful purposes, not weapons, expressed fury and vowed revenge over the assassination, calling it an act of terrorism and warmongering,” the New York Times World account wrote, linking to its story on how the assassination may provoke a new crisis.

But it gets weirder, when, as Barkoukis notes, other controversial figures enter the kerfuffle:

Fakhrizadeh was shot and killed along with his bodyguards as they traveled in Absard, roughly 40 miles east of Tehran. According to U.S. and Israeli officials, he was the “driving force behind…Iran’s secretive nuclear weapons program,” the Times wrote.

“His work continued after Iran’s push to develop a bomb was formally disbanded in 2003, according to American intelligence assessments and Iranian nuclear documents stolen by Israel nearly three years ago,” the paper said.

Iran has blamed Israeli assassins and Washington, and vowed revenge.

“Terrorists murdered an eminent Iranian scientist today,” Iran’s foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, wrote on Twitter. “This cowardice — with serious indications of Israeli role — shows desperate warmongering of perpetrators.”

The chief of staff for Iran’s armed forces, Brig. Gen. Mohammad Bagheri, said “we will not rest until we track down and take revenge on those responsible for the assassination of martyr Fakhrizadeh.”

Former Obama administration officials have been critical of the assassination, with former Central Intelligence Agency Director John Brennan calling it a "criminal act & highly reckless."

"It risks lethal retaliation & a new round of regional conflict," he said. "Iranian leaders would be wise to wait for the return of responsible American leadership on the global stage & to resist the urge to respond against perceived culprits.”

Hard for us to cheer something a shady CIA operative like John Brennan does, someone duly credited with masterminding the evil Russiagate hoax, but in this case, compared to the nutcases celebrating the Iranian scientist's assassination, he embodies reason. That's why the vile outbursts by Matt Vespa, a knee-jerk Trumpite, and another writer for Townhall.com, is simply reprehensible.  Look at what this idiot is saying:

Did You Notice Anything Ironic About That Tweet From John Brennan on Iran?

It's a great day. The architect of Iran’s nuclear weapons program Mohsen Fahrizade is dead. He got shot up. The world is better off. Yet, the only people who appear to be upset are the Obama folks. Take a look at what former CIA Director John Brennan tweeted.

Adding confusion to the soup, reactionary opportunist Ted Cruz chimes in with this Tweet:

It's crazy alright. We are watching a clash of what seems to be a variety of flavors of genuine rightwing criminality mixed with the usual insanity with fake leftism, as represented by the Democrats and their current allies in the Deep State. Leah Barkoukis wraps up the whole mess thusly:

Matt noted the irony of his tweet as a possible Logan Act violation, and pointed to Glenn Greenwald's observation.

"This, ironically, is *exactly* the message that Flynn gave to Russia during the 2016 transition — hey, guys, don’t get crazy with retaliation: wait until we’re in power shortly and things will be different," he tweeted. "Maybe the FBI should investigate Brennan for Logan Act violations?"

In this stinking Tower of Babel we have built for ourselves, in which right is wrong and up is down, we might remember the ancients'  very apt warning: "Those Whom The Gods Would Destroy They First Make Mad".
