Russia for the first time during its special operations in Ukraine has used a hypersonic “kinzhal” (dagger) missile. The missile’s use against a weapons depot was confirmed by both Russian and Ukrainian authorities. What is the significance of this strike or of hypersonic missiles in general, and how does their use fit into the wider geopolitical picture?

Russia has used its latest Kinzhal hypersonic missile for the first time to destroy an underground arms depot in the west of Ukraine, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.

Russia has used a Hypersonic Missile in the Ukraine conflict for the first time. The West are seeing this as a sign of desperation by Russia. I disagree and give my take on this.

Plus 3 excellent comments to the above video:

Very good video, Lee! As a 40 year old, I have now lived long enough to watch the world flip on its head. The fact you have to tell people watching from the West they are only getting one side of the story, and that Western media is now highly censored, is ironic but true. I grew up in Hong Kong near the end of the Cold War. There was a time when people thought Communists were lying, and Western media was telling the truth. Maybe it wasn't the case even back then. A few days ago, I watched an old British Pathe video made in 1965 about the Soviet Union. I was surprised the narrator was actually respectful, and it was a mostly objective look at day-to-day life inside the USSR, and this was at the height of the Cold War. It also confirms to me what I thought I knew already: Western media has gotten much more blatant in overt propaganda over the last 20-30 years as a result of the Internet, and the subsequent fracturing of the media space into information echo chambers. I can recall a time in the 1990s when media was more factual and objective, and didn't insert so much overt bias and opinion in their pieces. I can remember what I was taught in high school English class how journalism should be, that it should be unbiased, you should keep opinion out as much as possible and let your viewer decide. Yet, everything I see now on mainstream media (BBC, etc.) is the opposite of what I was taught at school. And on the Ukraine war, I source my information widely. I know Western media is entirely on Ukraine's side, and I know better than to trust Russian media at face value.* I also watch channels from neutral countries like CGTN, Al Jazeera, TRT World, Hindustan Times, Republic World, to try to figure out for myself what is really happening. I believe people from China, Russia, etc., already know all this, that one should always get one's information from a wide variety of sources. It seems this is something new for Westerners.
* In that, the commenter may be still reflecting his longstanding Western indoctrination. The Soviet Union, and Russia, the successor state, have a long record (and official policy) of not lying. They may keep some sensitive information at times, something every state does for obvious reasons, especially when dealing with the West, notorious for its cynicism and mendacity, but overall, the Russian record of largely truth in its mass information speaks for itself.
For the record the speed of sound at 20°C is 343 meters per second. Thus the speed of sound is 1234.8 km per hour. Since technically the Kinzhal is rated up to 10..12x the speed of sound this means this new hypersonic missile could fly at least at +10x the speed of sound equivalent to at least a minimum of 12,348 km/h and faster under optimal conditions. The key point being that Russian or Chinese hypersonic missiles are unstoppable with traditional US-NATO air defense obsolete technologies in Ukraine and Europe or elsewhere such as SCS. Oh and now China has developed the only air tunnel infrastructure in the world that can go over Mach 30+ (to optimize fluid thermodynamics AI simulations to develop next gen solutions via control theory feedback). That's over 37,044 km/h. ????

I agree there is no defence to hypersonic missiles, a message being sent by Russia. It should be noted, that many casualties have occurred by the interception of Russian missiles, thus landing and causing death, injury and destruction in residential areas. I think the Ukraine military is more concerned about not allowing missiles to reach their targets, than they are about where they are intercepted, and using the destruction, injuries and deaths for propaganda purposes, claiming residential areas are being targeted. Russia may be minimising this by use of hypersonic, and achieving their goals without the potential of residential damage and casualties.
