For decades, Miami has been a refuge for the most hostile ultra-right-wingers leaders and rich cons in Latin America. It has become a sort of political haven for those fleeing justice in their countries due to their negligence and corruption. It happened with a good part of the main leaders of the Jeanine Añez regime in Bolivia, perpetrators of a coup d’état against Evo Morales. Former neo fascist president of Brazil Jair Bolsanaro is also now swimming in the Miami political cesspool to avoid the crimes against the people and the environment that he left behind.
And it happens daily when it comes to Cuba, as they use Florida as a base of operations to orchestrate all kinds of actions against the government of President Miguel Díaz-Canel with impunity, to cite another example. As of today, a new name is added to that shameful list.
Venezuelan political fraud Juan Guaidó arrived in Miami on an overnight flight along with his family. This closes, once and for all, the sad chapter of the self-proclaimed “Constitutional President” of Venezuela, the infamous, Juan “Juanito” Guaidó. How did he end up in Florida? What does it mean for the United States to give political asylum to the shameless character that Washington helped create under the nefarious former President Donald Trump?
Let’s go back 24 hours in time. On Monday morning, Guaidó announced through his social networks that he had entered Colombia “on foot” to take part in an international conference convened in Bogota to unblock the dialogue between the Venezuelan opposition and the government of Nicolás Maduro. Gustavo Petro’s government quickly announced that they had not invited him and that he would not be allowed in.
The Venezuelan opposition puppet, sneaked into Colombia from Venezuela, crossing the border illegally by land, since Guaidó is forbidden to leave his country, by court order.
On Monday afternoon, the general director of Migration in Colombia, Fernando Garcia declared that Colombian authorities had opened an administrative process against Guaidó Márquez. “the offender was notified to leave the country and the procedure had all the guarantees and protection of his rights,” he said.
Guaido and his team tried to cover up who was behind the maneuver that would take him to Miami. They implied that the payment for the plane that departed from El Dorado, in Bogota, had been paid for by Petro’s government.
“It is not true. The national government did not have a plane to transport Mr. Guaidó to that country. Migration Colombia was attentive to ensure that this trip took place without delay,” Garcia added in his statement.
Colombia’s President Petro weighed in on the fiasco by tweeting, “just enter with your passport and ask for asylum. With pleasure it would have been offered. You didn’t need to enter illegally,”
Colombia’s Foreign Minister Alvaro Leyva told journalists that Guaido was accompanied by U.S. officials to the airport and his ticket was provided by the United States.
According to Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, it was US Chargé d’Affaires in Venezuela James Story who was responsible for financing Guaidó’s trip. “I have no doubt that Juan Guaidó’s intemperate, abrupt, and abusive visit to Bogotá was sponsored by Jimmy Story,” Maduro assured.
“Those two men have done a lot of damage to U.S.-Venezuela relationship, to Venezuela, and even to the country’s opposition,” Maduro lashed out.
The western corporate media, which dances to the beat of the drums of US policy towards Venezuela had titled Guaido in the past as the “Constitutional President of Venezuela, recognized by more than fifty countries”, today even they acknowledge that this final episode was nothing more than a humiliating show. "Juanito" was the golden boy of the United States, now he is a symbolic shame of US foreign policy and diplomacy that is looking more and more unraveled and pathetic these days.
So there he is, Guaido, like many others in that nefarious list of men who wander the streets of Miami with impunity, sooner or later, nobody talks about them anymore.
