Still intoxicated with WW2 visions of invincible imperial power, the warmongering Neocons forget, says Garland, that Iran is a regional superpower with immense military deterrent power in missile technology, the equivalent of nuclear bombs, but far more flexible in tactical terms. Iran could wipe out most if not all US bases in the region, sink any ships that dare come closer to the Persian Gulf, and also deploy its "economic bomb", the disruption of oil supplies through the Strait of Hormuz, which it controls entirely. The "economic bomb" could collapse the Western economies, including the US, which could quickly see the price of oil shoot up to $17 or even $25 a gallon at the pump, and in many places force a complete absence of available oil. It goes without saying that any attack on Iran's soil could unleash a rain of missiles that could easily wipe out Israel off the map.

The equilibrium of world power is a delicate balance, which weighs that of large continents against each other. This is like a compass that while spinning remains stable, but the slightest tremor and the whole edifice breaks into shards. The question of Iran, its oil and power lie in the hands of China and Rusia (China because much of its energy=oil comes from Iran).
