Two notorious US politicians are now planning to betray the remaining Right Whales, on the edge of extinction

First, let's get this straight: The Greanville Post is not associated in any form or manner with the Center for Biological Diversity, but we do appreciate the vital work they do on behalf of all US citizens by protecting their natural patrimony constantly under attack by moneyed interests and their long-time allies, the politicians in the US Congress.  In the idealised picture of US democracy, one is encouraged to imagine US legislators working "day and night" (as a recent ridiculous propaganda ad for the Biden/Harris campaign has it), for the public good, almost like the Man of la Mancha, looking everywhere for crimes and wrongs to rectify and eliminate. Unfortunately, the record points otherwise, almost the precise opposite, as the pages of this publication abundantly (and regrettably) document. US democracy is based on the "one dollar, one vote", "might makes right" formula, which puts the almighty dollar well above the political will of the majority of citizens who supposedly decide the destiny of this great republic. So what Kieran Suckling and his people are telling us should surprise no one.  Please do pay attention.

Why are right whales so rare? This NOAA Fisheries video explains it.
Whaling is no longer a threat, but they have never recovered to pre-whaling numbers, and human interactions still present the greatest danger to this species. Entanglement in fishing gear and vessel strikes are the leading causes of North Atlantic right whale mortality. These incontrovertible facts—not to mention the most elementary sense of duty toward nature or compassion—are clearly lacking in these two guys and their accomplices in Congress. So now to their long list of votes against the public interest, and warmongering in all directions, from the Middle East, Ukraine and beyond, we must add reckless assault on endangered wildlife. These are the scum that a massively ignorant and manipulated American public sends to Congress.

With all the urgent and obvious problems in the world, we might think these moral cretins would have better things to do than legislate some petty favor for a special interest clearly at odds with the well-being of precious marine animals.

Hi Greanville Post,

Senators Joe Manchin and Lindsey Graham share a common goal: making North Atlantic right whales extinct.

They proposed a bill that would put off slowing down boats and ships in right whale habitat. And vessel strikes are a leading cause of death for these magnificent and highly endangered animals.

The Center for Biological Diversity is fighting for them. Please help by giving to the Saving Life on Earth Fund today.

NOAA Fisheries has a rule in place to try to reduce vessel strikes.

But it doesn't go far enough — and right whales are paying for that.

So we filed an emergency petition to implement new rules for vessels in the coastal waters where right whales feed, have their babies, and migrate.

And we're in court trying to force the agency to finalize its proposed rule to expand the speed limits before the next right whale calving season begins in November.

Now Manchin and Graham want to ban the government from strengthening that rule until 2030, just so industry can make more profits.

Right whales don't have that long.

As few as 360 remain — and only 70 are females currently capable of having young.

Because of how much time they spend at the water's surface, mothers and calves are the ones most vulnerable to vessel strikes. This makes increased protection vital to the species' survival and recovery.

Federal scientists say 50 calves need to be born each year for several years to allow the population to recover — but only 19 were born in the most recent calving season. Tragically, one of those calves was already killed by a vessel strike and four more are missing and presumed dead.

In 2017 NOAA Fisheries called the crisis North Atlantic right whales are facing an "unusual mortality event." It's been seven years. It's not unusual anymore.

As federal agencies get bogged down in bureaucracy and politicians push laws that will doom precious species to disappearing forever, we keep fighting. We have to.

It's the fight of a lifetime, and we need you with us.

Please give now to the Saving Life on Earth Fund.

Thank you for visiting our animal defence section. Before leaving, please take a moment to reflect on these mind-numbing institutionalized cruelties.

The wheels of business and human food compulsions—often exacerbated by reactionary creeds— are implacable and totally lacking in compassion. This is a downed cow, badly hurt, but still being dragged to slaughter. Click on this image to fully appreciate this horror repeated millions of times every day around the world. With plentiful non-animal meat substitutes that fool the palate, there is no longer reason for this senseless suffering. And meat consumption is a serious ecoanimal crime. The tyranny of the palate must be broken. Please consider changing your habits and those around you in this regard.
