Contrary to widespread opinion, the Soviet Union in the Stalin Era was a world leader in environmental protection.
Soviet Environmentalism in the Stalin era
The USSR did not have emission controls in the Stalin period, but neither did the West, anywhere. Not to mention that the private car did not exist under Lenin and Stalin to constitute a threat to nature. And prior to the 1960s (Stalin died in 1953), environmental law did not exist anywhere in the world. Typically, anti-communists have conveniently ignored all these facts in their unrelenting campaign to demonise Stalin, and communism in general.
