Editor’s Note: Some people on the left are ecstatic that—at long last—a member of the filthy corpomedia has spoken truth to his audience on a topic as sensitive as the empire’s chronic criminal wars. Not only that, but he essentially called the entire American political class a bunch of sellouts to the country’s plutocracy. Woohooo!
Is this a case of sneaky commie infiltration of our utterly sanitized mass communications? You wish. The man in question is Jack Cafferty, an old gruff from the old school, a man who easily evokes the age when the “gentlemen of the press” wore beatup fedoras and rumpled suits and never stopped smoking. In any case, whatever the reality behind the projected image, Cafferty until now was more distinguished for his bark than for his bite. Wearing the topical straitjacket that all American media creatures must wear to stay afloat, let alone advance in their careers, Cafferty in most instances sounded at best like a not very well formulated left-liberal. And his tendency to curse the left, or follow the party line as often as he decried the abuses of the establishment, put him squarely in the camp of bourgeois centrists. But now this. What’s the world coming to? What really came over him?
I sure wish Jack a long tenure in his newly discovered suit as a truthteller, but I am no great believer in fairytales and I know that no one—and certainly not Cafferty—can get away for long with this kind of uppity talk. The masters of the universe and their loyal lieutenants won’t permit it. They’ll read him the riot act soon enough—subtly, of course, Jack might decide to make some stink, after all he’s a true believer— and if he shows obduracy they may even make an example of him, which means they may try to clean his professional clock. Or simply relegate him to early pasture. Either way he’ll be silenced. Watch your back, Jack. The knives are probably out, already.

Jack Cafferty: Military-industrial complex has this country by the throat
CNN commentator Jack Cafferty railed against the United States’ ongoing involvement in Afghanistan following the alleged murder of 16 Afghan civilians by a rogue U.S. soldier.
“How much is enough?” he said Tuesday. “The United States has been in Afghanistan for more than ten years. And President Obama insists we will remain in Afghanistan until the end of 2014. Why? What will be accomplished by staying in that godforsaken hellhole for another 20 months that hasn’t been accomplished in 10 and a half years?”
He noted that recent events, including the burning of Qurans and desecration of Taliban corpses, had inflamed hatred against Americans in Afghanistan.
“Yet the Obama White House is out with a statement insisting that none of this will deter us from our mission, which is what exactly?” Cafferty continued. “I have no idea what the hell we’re doing there anymore. Isn’t Osama bin Laden dead?”
He cynically predicted Obama would only hasten withdrawal from Afghanistan if he thought staying there would imperil his re-election campaign.
“Why don’t the American people have anything to say about what we’re doing?” Cafferty added. “We have no voice in any of this stuff any more. They go into Iraq, they go into Afghanistan, they might go into Iran. We got nothing. We’re just kept in the dark and the government does whatever the hell it feels like doing, or preferably what it is being told to do by the people who pay the politicians’ bills. Remember that warning from Dwight Eisenhower about the military-industrial complex? It’s got this country by the throat.”
