This 20-episode documentary was filmed by Soviet documentary filmmaker Roman Karmen in collaboration with colleagues from the United States in 1979. American actor Burt Lancaster was the moderator. The creators of the film The Unknown War set themselves the task of objectively reflecting the events of the Great Patriotic War, and the film turned out to be a revelation for the American audience and at the same time a unique opportunity for the peoples of the USSR to bring the truth about the heroic deed of the Soviet people and individuals who made an invaluable contribution in the fight against Nazism. Nazi Germany prepared and unleashed its aggression, counting on the strategy of blitzkrieg, implemented in the Barbarossa plan. In the war against the USSR, the goal was to liquidate the Soviet state, take possession of its wealth, physically exterminate the bulk of the population and "Germanize" the territory of the country up to the Urals. For the Soviet people, the Great Patriotic War became a just war for the freedom and independence of their socialist homeland. During the Great Patriotic War, Soviet troops, with the support of other states of the anti-Hitler coalition, inflicted the greatest damage on the troops of Germany and its European allies and liberated the territories of the Soviet Union, Central and Eastern Europe occupied by them, thereby playing a decisive role in the defeat of Nazism in Europe.
