Gripping drama of war-torn Ireland in 1920s, with American medical student trying to stay aloof, but eventually joining the underground rebel army (cell) led by iron-willed Cagney. Strikingly filmed on location. The Black & Tan repression of the irish people and the resistance have seldom been portrayed more vividly, as well as the unexpected twists and turns thrown up by fate. Though forgotten by many, the infamous Black & Tans were WWI demobilized English soldiers that the Crown sent to Ireland to do police/occupation duty, in part to distract unruly social elements that might have caused similar trouble in Britain itself due to high unemployment and generally harsh economic circumstances.
