Art installations are finally being used for important political statements.
A new technology has been developed to strengthen the armamentarium of anti-plutocratic protests, holograms, and Spain is in the vanguard of this new approach. Below a protest against the new “Patriot Act”-style bill proposed by the Spanish government, and quickly nicknamed in Spain the “Gag Law” (Ley Mordaza). The law is scheduled to take effect July 1 2015. Thousands participated in this action, from Brazil, Argentina, France, Spain, UK, USA, Germany, Belgium and other nations. The sponsoring group, NoSomosDelito (“WeAreNotACrime”) was demonstrating against a law that attacked constitutional guarantees of free speech, assembly and petition. Spain has a history of extensive protests.
Spain Hologram Protest: The Future of Activism
Spanish activist group Hologramas por la Libertad have staged the world’s first ever hologram protest in response to the Citizen Safety Law passed by the Spanish government, which set huge fines for protestors convening outside of government buildings. The virtual demonstration, which took place in front of the Spanish Parliament, was meant to show that, despite the new legal restrictions, the public can still get its message across.
