MATT HOH: Live On The Ground From Israel & Gaza Border

Gazing Into Gaza

The grotesque horror of a school field trip arriving at this location from two hours away to watch the mass slaughter from an observation deck was a shock I am overwhelmed by. The first wave of boys pumped celebratory firsts and thrust middle fingers upon their sight of Gaza.

By Matt Hoh
Matt’s Thoughts on War and Peace (11/18/24)

That is Gaza behind me.

The fence line is 600m away. The northern part of Gaza, where Israel is carrying out a genocide within a genocide, systematically starving 300,000 Palestinians to death, is about 2km further.

The absurdity and the obscenity of being able to be this close to 20,000 murdered children, their bodies “prophetic voices from under the rubble” as a colleague called them, is difficult to accept.

The grotesque horror of a school field trip arriving at this location from two hours away to watch the mass slaughter from an observation deck was a shock I am overwhelmed by. The first wave of boys pumped celebratory firsts and thrust middle fingers upon their sight of Gaza.

It was quiet. The sounds of those buried under rubble don’t reach the observation deck. No torn and wrecked bodies could be seen, no sunlight reflected in pools of blood, and no strips of clothes snagged on exposed bones fluttered in the strong wind. We were as close as we could be but so separate and so safe from it. It was sanitary and septic, picturesque.

I felt I was a voyeur, a tourist, a spectator. I felt disgust and disbelief. And I felt an absence within me that I cannot articulate.

To be that close to the cleansing and destruction of 2.2 million people and to be centering now my words on my feelings doesn’t escape me. Perhaps a well-achieved purpose of that observation deck of genocide.

The Nietzsche-ism, stare into the abyss and the abyss stares back at you, struck me as I stood there.

Stare into Gaza and Gaza stares back is what I am left with now, comfortable in my Jerusalem hotel, just hours after looking into their genocide as if I were on a platform at a national park or on the boardwalk at the shore.

The horror of the genocide I expected but did not see. I thought I might curse and cry. I did neither. The cruel and so very human spectacle of a caged people being destroyed as a display for school children was what I encountered. I did not expect that and I don’t know how to respond.

Note: Americans partially funded this observation deck.

A school field trip assembled at the observation platform overlooking Gaza.

These are my first thoughts on standing that close to Gaza. I may need to revisit them.

I am in Palestine this week as part of a delegation to be in solidarity with and learn from those engaged in Palestinian liberation. Today, in addition to this visit to the border of Gaza, we met with Rabbis for Human Rights and an October 7th survivor in the Sderot settlement, as well as a Palestinian Lutheran minister in Bethlehem.

Yesterday, we were in Jerusalem’s Old City. Here are my reflections from that visit: [NOTE: I could not found the link Matt mentioned. I have sent him a note asking if he can send it. I will post it when I get it. — MT]

Please comment and share. I will try and post more from this visit.

Matt Hoh Reports From Just Beyond The Ragged, Bloody Fringe Of Civilization — Israel

Judging Freedom (11/19/24)

Even when Israeli and international activists accompany villagers to their olive groves, hoping to deter the threat, there’s no guarantee of safety.

Hanan Abu Salameh, 59, was shot and killed by an Israeli soldier while she harvested olives.

By Wyre Davies
Reporting from the West Banl Umm Safa
BBC News (11/20/24)

On a Thursday afternoon towards the end of last month, a 59-year-old Palestinian woman set out to gather olives on her family’s land near the village of Faqqua, in the north of the occupied West Bank.

It was something that Hanan Abu Salameh had done for decades.

Within minutes, the mother of seven and grandmother of 14 lay dying in the dust of the olive grove, with a bullet wound in her chest - she’d been shot by an Israeli soldier.

Even though the family had co-ordinated their intention to pick olives with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), according to her son Fares and husband Hossam, the soldier fired several shots as other family members fled for cover.

The IDF says it’s investigating the incident (Hah! as usual!), but Hanan’s grieving relatives have little hope or expectation that her killer will be brought to justice.

This wasn’t an isolated incident.

Harvesting olives is an age-old ritual and also an economic necessity for many Palestinians, but, according to the UN, it is increasingly precarious.

Farmers across the West Bank - internationally regarded as Palestinian land occupied by Israel - face heightened risks, like organised attacks by Israeli settlers seeking to sabotage the olive harvest, along with the use of force by Israeli security forces to block roads and Palestinians' access to their lands.

“Last year we couldn’t even harvest our olives, except for a very small amount,” says Omar Tanatara, a farmer from the village of Umm Safa.

“At one point, the army came, threw the olives we’d already gathered on the ground, and ordered us to go home,” says Omar, who is also a member of the village council.

“Some people were even shot at and olives trees were cut down with saws – that’s how we later found them,” adds Omar, as he and other villagers use small hand-held rakes to pull this year’s harvest from their remaining trees while they can.

No guarantee of safety

Even when Israeli and international activists accompany villagers to their olive groves, hoping to deter the threat, there’s no guarantee of safety.

Zuraya Hadad instinctively winces as we watch a video of the incident in which her ribs were broken by a masked man wielding a large stick.

The Israeli peace activist had been helping Palestinian farmers pick their olives when she was assaulted without provocation.

Rather than arresting her attacker, Israeli soldiers, who’d accompanied settlers to the site, just told him to move on.

“Even when we come to help, it doesn't guarantee that the Palestinians can harvest their olives,” Zuraya tells me as she recovers from her injuries at home.

“We try to raise awareness, but in the end it's either the settlers steal the olives or cut the trees, or they remain unpicked and go to waste.”

Land is at the heart of the decades-old conflict between Israel and the Palestinians - who controls it and who has access to it.

For thousands of Palestinian families and villages, cultivating and harvesting olives is a big part of their economy.

But many say that, in recent times, access to trees on their land has been impeded, often violently by Israeli settlers.

Hundreds of trees - which can take years to reach fruit-bearing maturity - have been deliberately burned or cut down, says the UN.

Israeli peace activist Zuraya Hadad was attacked by a masked man as she accompanied Palestinian farmers to the harvest.

After being gathered by hand, villagers from Umm Safa take sacks full of olives to the nearby factory, where the presses have restarted this season.

Olives are the most important agricultural product in the West Bank. In a good year, they're worth more than $70m (£54m) to the Palestinian economy.

But income was well down last year and this year will be even worse, says factory owner Abd al-Rahman Khalifa, as even fewer farmers are able to harvest their crop owing to attacks by settlers.

“Let me give you an example,” he tells me.

“My brother-in-law in Lubban - next to the Israeli settlement - went to pick his own olives, but they broke his arms and they made him leave along with everyone who was with him.”

“We, as Palestinians, don’t have petrol or big companies. Our main agricultural crop is olives,” he adds. “So, like the Gulf depends on oil, and the Americans on business, our economy is dependent on the olive tree.”

On the hill overlooking the olive groves of Umm Safa stands an illegal settler outpost - a farm.

The extremist settler who runs it, Zvi Bar Yosef, was sanctioned this year by the UK and other Western governments for repeated acts of violence against Palestinians, including twice threatening families at gunpoint.

Over the last year of the war in Gaza, Jewish settlers have been emboldened by the support of far-right Israeli ministers like Itamar Ben-Gvir.

As national security minister, he has given out free firearms to hundreds of settlers and has encouraged them to assert their right to what - they say - is their "God-given" land.

Ben-Gvir has also been accused of openly supporting the disruption of olive harvesting on Palestinian land.

At the olive press, farmers wait patiently in the yard to witness the transformation of the olives they’ve been able to gather this year into "liquid gold".

The olive tree has been a symbol of this land for centuries.

For generations of Palestinians, it is their link to the land - a link that is under threat now more than ever.

CARTOON: Number One Lesson For Lefty Progressives To Learn From 2024

Rec·i·proc·i·ty — is the quality or state of being reciprocal : mutual dependence, action, or influence.

By Mark Taylor
DeMOCKracy (11/12/24)

One of the central features of a functional political process is — just as in real life — reciprocity. Reciprocity is the action/reaction of daily life. Someone holds the door for you and you say, “Thank you.”

And they say, “You’re welcome. Have a nice day.”

Reciprocity. Simple!

I’m not sure when reciprocity was mortally wounded in our society, but I know now I’m always a bit shocked when someone returns a phone call or email or people in my neighbourhood help each other. All too rare events in today’s America.

Despite politics being an act of reciprocity between voter and candidate/party in which you support a party and vote for a candidate because you feel confident they have similar values and will work on legislation that can make life better for you, your family and community. In return for that affirmation, donation and vote, the politician and party will — theoretically — advocate for your interests.

A measure of reciprocity is essential to any functional political process.

In politics, reciprocity has been scorched away. Watch the Breaking Points interview (fourth clip below) with Jim Zogby as he describes what things are like now inside the Democratic Party. The only role members of the party are expected to play is to be good little boys and girls, send in money and show up to vote for the candidates those in power have so considerately put in place.

Your role, your voice mean nothing.

As an example, since the beginning of the US/Israel genocide I have called Wisconsin Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) probably 200 times, usually only getting a voicemail. I wrote probably 20 times. Each and every time I provided my name, phone number and request that a staffer call back. I pointed out I voted twice for Baldwin and donated to past campaigns. In response, I have received zero call backs and perhaps three pro forma email responses, the last one completely misrepresenting what I had said in my letter.

Now, I did receive — of course — several fundraising letters. I reciprocated in a proper way for such a request from such a person. I stuffed the pre-paid return envelope with scrap paper, cardboard and cat food labels to beef up the postage cost for her campaign and wrote a personalized message on the back side then dropped it in the mailbox.

I voted for a third party candidate. Baldwin barely squeaked back into office, running against a California multi-millionaire banker. My third party candidate got 1.3 percent of the vote, more than Baldwin’s less than a full point .9% margin of victory.

Political reciprocity

Former Trump Secretary of Defense and CIA Director, Mike Pompeo looked like he was headed back into the circle of the White House with a Trump second term. Pompeo is one of the dankest, spiny creatures from the oiliest corner of the neocon dungeon. Among other things, he’s the one who ordered an assassination plot on heroic whistle blower Julian Assange.

Trump was floating the possibility of bringing Pompeo in as Secretary of State or Secretary of War, or some other post. But the MAGAverse was having nothing to do with such a slimy development.

On November 8 a Twitter/X user identified as Cat turd posted…

Trend it…
#NoPompeo

The post took off, gathering 1.1 million views in a matter of hours. Donald Trump Jr. jumped in midday Tweeting/Xing: “I’m on it”

Five hours later Trump messaged that not only Pompeo, but Nikki Haley too, would not be part of his new administration.

Talk about reciprocity!

Contrast that with how Democrats are responding in the third video below. All the Democratic Congressional positions are remaining the same. Nobody will pay a price for the massive political malpractice of the Harris/DNC campaign. There will be no reciprocity

Johnny Graz Tweeted/X’d out regarding the Pompeo development: “Hey shitlibs — this is how you push a candidate left.”

That’s how politics works when a party or candidate believes you may walk away. And always remember, you don’t owe anyone or any party your vote.

You’re free.

For now.

Jon Stewart DESTROYS 'Woke' Dem Autopsy Takes

“There's some evidence their ad and ground game actually were kind of effective. It's because they have zero narrative they have failed to create the right divisive politics and if you don't relentlessly explain your story of the world your, goals principles heroes and villains your opponents they will happily fill in the blanks ergo she's for ‘they/them’, he's for you. So what would a better strategy look like? Well it looks like Bernie's 2016 class first populism, but on steroids. Democrats need to abandon a bland and offensive unity between the Cheneys and AOC and embrace a division that aggressively excises everyone who puts the billionaire's interest over the working class.

“There should be purity tests on everything that is core to that war against the plutocrats and a large public purge of those who are on the wrong side of that divide.

“If you don't agree that billionaires should be abolished, then get the f*ck out. If you don't want to tax the rich, get the f*ck out. If you don't want to radically increase Union power, get the f*ck out. If you don't want to implement a universal jobs guarantee, get out. If you don't want healthcare, get out. If you do support these things but you also have more moderate position on abortion, guns, trans athletes, okay, there can be a space for you here, but these cultural issues can never be central — they are distractions. Because to claim them as central is to void the correct divisive frame and undercut the narrative the war is not between immigrants and Americans. The war is between the plutocrats and the people. Immigrant and trans panics those are ploys to keep regular people divided against each other instead of against the corrupt political media and economic elite who have rigged the system and hogged all the spoils.”

Pentagon’s New Plans To Use Lethal Force Against Americans!

Jimmy Dore (10/17/24)

The Posse Comitatus Act, passed by Congress in 1878, bans the United States Armed Forces from being used to enforce domestic policies. Meaning the government can’t deploy the army to suppress protesters or otherwise act as police within the U.S. borders. Except that the Defense Department recently issued a directive that conflicts directly with the Posse Comitus Act and states that the military can and will be deployed domestically to crush internal dissent.

LEAKED:
Military Manual For Policing Homeland Internment Camps For Political Dissidents

[Editor’s Note: FYI, I did some copy editing of the text below and added several subheadlines. — M. Taylor]

By Ray Joseph Cormier (10/17/19)

LEAKED US MILITARY MANUAL FOR POLICING HOMELAND INTERNMENT CAMPS FOR POLITICAL DISSIDENTS

The link above confirms what is now Legally possible in the US as earlier reported in the  link below posted January 11, 2012 on the 2012 National Defense Authorization Act giving the US Military legal authority to grab American citizens out of their homes or off the street, and lock them up indefinitely in some Gitmo-Gulag based on bureaucratic determination that someone has some vague association with terrorism.

There is no phone call to a lawyer. The Writ of Habeus Corpus, or a day in court, to contest the government allegation is removed. Anyone arrested becomes one of the Disappeared.

The following video details the contents of a Department of Defense document entitled “INTERNMENT AND RESETTLEMENT OPERATIONS” or FM 3-39.40. The document is 325 pages long and is signed by JOYCE E. MORROW Administrative Assistant to the Secretary of the Army. It was created in 2010 however it has just recently [2019] been leaked to the public via the internet and can now be downloaded from multiple sources. In the description below you will find a download link for the document. I encourage you to download it yourself and verify everything that is being said here.

US citizens targeted

The document outlines military procedures for internment and resettlement of civilians and it describes the layout and administration of internment camps. It clearly states on page 38 that it applies within U.S. territory and specifically addresses the detainment of U.S. citizens as is indicated by the identification procedures for new prisoners on page 146, which states that social security numbers are to be recorded alongside their photograph and fingerprints. Included in the list of organizations which may be involved in these internment operations are the Department of Homeland Security, the FEMA, the Department of Defense and the United Nations.

Internment camps for political dissidents in the U.S. aren't a conspiracy theory. The Department of Defense document entitled "INTERNMENT AND RESETTLEMENT OPERATIONS" or FM 3-39.40 proves this beyond a shadow of a doubt.

4-minute video

On page 56 the document outlines the responsibilities of Psychological Operations officers within the camps among which it states that a Psyop officer “Develops and executes indoctrination programs to reduce or remove antagonistic attitudes and Identifies political activists.” On page 281 the document goes into more detail regarding the role Psychological Operations within the camps specifically in regards to pacifying the population and insuring cooperation.

On page 238 it gives the conditions for the use of deadly force in such camps, among the justifications for lethal force it includes to “terminate an active escape attempt”.That point right there should make it clear that these camps are not benevolent disaster relief type facilities.

On page 244 the document calls for the use of snipers during riots to quote “scan a crowd and identify agitators and riot leaders for apprehension and fire lethal rounds if warranted”.

On page 260 it shows the basic layout for a facility focusing on detainment. It is depicted with interrogation areas, tribunal areas and mortuaries. Each detainment facility is designed to hold 4,000 prisoners and they are depicted with multiple levels of barbed wire separating compartments within the facilities with a double barbed wire fence enclosing them and 24 guard towers.

‘Resettlement’…behind barbed wire

On page 261 it depicts the layout for what they call civilian resettlement facilities, which are designed to house 8,000 people. And though it uses the word resettlement, the plans show multiple levels of barbed wire dividing the sections of the facility and double barbed wire fencing on the outside as well as 16 guard towers.

On page 262 the layout for facilities designed for what they call non-compliant prisoners is shown. These camps are designed to hold up to 300 prisoners, they have 3 interrogation centers and are guarded by 13 guard towers.

Now if there is any question whether these plans are active or are just theoretical this should be settled by the fact that the U.S. army has been running ads for job positions in these camps since 2009 and apparently they are still hiring.

http://www.goarmy.com/careers-and-jobs/browse-career-and-job-categories/…

If you look in the description you’ll find all the links you need to verify this information.

It’s important to note here that this document was created in 2010, which was under the Obama administration, and it predates the NDAA of 2012 which authorized military detainment of U.S. citizens. This clearly shows a long term agenda at work.

“Thirteen seconds and sixty-seven rounds later,  one student was dead, three others lay dying. Nine students were wounded, including Dean Kahler, who took a bullet in his spine and never walked again.

“The victim closest to the troops, Joe  Lewis, was more than twenty yards away. His crime? He gave the Guardsmen the finger. The nearest fatality, Jeffrey Miller, was unarmed and nearly 100 yards away. Allison Krause was  unarmed and 343 feet way. William Schroeder, a ROTC member, was nearly 400 feet away, as was  Sandy Scheuer, who was walking to her next class. Clearly, none presented a  threat to the State of Ohio.”

OUR FUTURE: Arrest & Brutalization Of British Journalist Sarah Wilkinson Reveals We Are Dropping Into Legal Dystopia

George Galloway interviews Sarah Wilkinson

Waking up to the brutal reality we now confront and seeing it clearly for what it is, is the first necessary act of resistance.
By Mark Taylor

DeMOCKracy.ink (9/13/24)

As bad as the recent home invasion and arrest of British Journalist and human rights activist Sarah Wilkinson was, it is clear something extremely insidious is happening. In this interview with British former Member of Parliament George Galloway, Wilkinson describes the brutality and wanton destructiveness of the home invasion, Gestapo-like (Mossad-like) interrogation and clearly intended state terrorism.

Confiscation of her phone, laptop and all electronic devices was not enough. The dozen ‘police’ — some plainclothes wearing identity-shielding balaclavas — stole her passport and the money she had with it Her home was ransacked and even the urn containing her mother’s ashes was emptied out onto the floor.

The kind of desecration of the dead Palestinians are all too familiar with.

What prompted such police state terror?

  • Planning to overthrow the government?
    Plotting a terror attack?
    Making bombs in the basement?

She was handcuffed so tightly they cut her wrists and, she notes, “I lost the circulation in my fingers.”

She was thrown into a police van which then drove in the wrong direction of the nearby police station in Shrewsbury. She was in the car for almost 90 minutes as it drove further into the countryside, passing numerous signed turn-offs back into town.

“There was a point in this arrest where I thought, God these aren't police. We're going the wrong way so there was an element of terror in the fact that we drove probably about 30 miles the wrong way,” Wilkinson recalls. “There was a point that I thought that this is an execution. So, yes, I was quite relieved actually to see the police station.”

As this was going on, ‘police’ — and whatever other goons were involved — ransacked and looted her home.

Who were these thugs?

Meanwhile, the nature of the intimidation and threat at the police station was a different kind of abuse, and a different kind of interrogation.

“The interrogation was extraordinarily racist,” Wilkinson explained. “There was a point where I had to break the ‘no comment’ and say ‘I'm sorry but this line of questioning is extraordinarily racist.’

“It didn't feel like British police questioning. We're a multicultural society so to ask questions like ‘why do you think Palestinians are better than us?’, ‘why do you think they're better than white people?’, ‘why aren't white people as good as Palestinians?’ For me, it felt like non-British questioning.”

She was threatened with 5-15 years in prison for refusing to divulge pass codes and PIN numbers for her electronic devices. Because many of her news sources are Palestinians, physicians in Gaza and activists, she refused to provide any of that information, knowing their identification could lead to their imprisonment or — more likely — death.

Numerous police protocols were broken, and, she said, the local Shrewsbury police seemed a little confused by the whole affair. They released her, under seven bail conditions, including not using any phone or computer or any other kind of electronic communication device.

As Galloway notes, “She became the first person in 2024 to be told she could never use a telephone or never use a computer again.”

What it was really about

“I actually don't think they ever intended this to go to court. This was about terrorizing not just me as a civilian in my own home this was [about] terrorizing [of critics].”

There are more details of Wilkinson’s ordeal in the video below, but the thing that stands out to me is, the armed thugs who arrested Wilkinson and wantonly desecrated and ransacked her home were not regular police. Perhaps Israeli Mossad or Shin Bet, as Wilkinson says. Certainly the local Shrewsbury police out of the loop. I doubt the terror team were even all British.

If you think such governmental terrorism will be limited to Great Britain, I have a genocide to tell you about.

As I noted in yesterday’s post “Speaking Of Cats...The Cat That Ate America”, we are in a whole different governmental landscape.

The terror attack on Wilkinson is a signal flare for those paying attention.

Waking up to the brutal reality we now confront and seeing it clearly for what it is, is the first necessary act of resistance.

HISTORY THEY HIDE FROM US: Jewish Scholar Ilan Pappe Reveals The Truth Of Modern Israel's Origin -- The 1948 Nakba Massacres

The horrors of the US/Israel genocide in Gaza — and now unfolding in the West Bank — are blowing the bloody mosaic of lies to pieces.

As I often note in these post, the depth of lies, myth and outright deception Americans have been subjected to about the origins and reality of the Israeli Zionist fascist state is one of the biggest PsyOps of all time. The horrors of the US/Israel genocide in Gaza — and now unfolding in the West Bank — are blowing the bloody mosaic of lies to pieces.

One of the first things for we in the United States and throughout the corporate empire of the West to do is educate ourselves about what really has happened to the Palestinians. To explore and come to grips with the extent and depth of control the fascist regime and the Zionist lobby has on our Congress — as we saw recently on cringey display with Netanyahu’s recent ‘State of the Union Address’.

We need to learn the truth and much of that truth comes from Jewish journalists, commentators and scholars like Norman Finkelstein and Ilan Pappe, who grew up in Israel.

Pappe has published several books on Israel and the fascist nature of Zionism. “Lobbying For Zionism” is his latest.

On 1948 | Ilan Pappe | Part I | 2018 interview

In the fascinating interview below, Pappe brings historical reality, context and perspective to the current crime of the US/Israel genocide in Gaza. The interview is from early March, so some of the facts of the genocide have changed, but his overall observations are not only valid, they are being proven out in real time.

We need to learn
We need to act.
We need to resist.

“I saw evidence that really challenged everything that I knew”

UNAPOLOGETIC / Middle East Eye (3/15/24)

Ilan Pappe shares how he came across historical documents back in 1978 that debunked Zionist myths and set him off on his journey to becoming an Israeli dissident, why what is going on in Gaza is a ‘genocide’ that is much worse than the Nakba of 1948, and why he thinks Zionism is near its end.

Israeli Filmmaker Eric Goldman's Documentary "Tantura" Puts The Cruelty Of The 1948 Nakba In Human Terms

(Editor’s Note: Back in early July I did a post on the documentary film “Tantura” by Israeli filmmaker Alon Schwarz. The film documents the horrors and crimes of the Israeli military and settlers in the Palestinian village of Tantura, during the 1948 Nakba. You can link to the post with more information on the film here. Unfortunately, the link to the full film apparently no longer works. Track it down, watch it and learn what the United States is helping to perpetuate. — Mark Taylor)

JBS (12/6/22)

Director Alon Schwarz discusses “Tantura,” his documentary as it investigates controversial events at the Palestinian village of Tantura in 1948, where survivors claimed to witness a massacre of civilians by Israeli troops.
