Evelyn Samarajiwa, 1924-2024

I'm trying to write this as my children squall around me, much as Achchi tried to go to the bathroom while taking care of my baby sister, who gleefully pulled all the toilet paper to the floor. Achchi physically raised us, and it's physically painful now that she's gone. I remember imagining her death as a young child and it was the saddest thing I could imagine. Now she has died and—even thirty-something years later, even after 100 years of good life—it still hurts. I thought I had pre-grieved but it doesn't work.

Me and Achchi in Vancouver, Canada, 1983 or 1984

Achchi did many things for many people but I was her grandchild and I was special. She always made me feel special and nothing can shake that belief that I was. Even as a hoary old adult, Achchi still looked at me like I was a baby. Like I was a sheer bundle of joy though I had long since unpacked into melancholy adulthood. Even as her mind was going, Achchi still looked at me like I was God's gift for just showing up. Now no one will look at me like that. That child dies with her. That person, that perception, that universe is just gone.

Achchi was ready to go—she had told me for years—but I was never ready to let her. I always told her to wait, for this great-grandchild, for that visit, for me to be home. In the selfish way of a grandchild I always asked for more and—in the selfless way of a grandmother—she always gave it. But two months after her 100th birthday, her mind slipped away and her body gave out. When I left for my wife's graduation, Achchi went into hospital and then hospice and I knew it was coming. I've known it was coming for years and felt it coming for weeks but somehow it all comes at once. Achchi always indulged me as a grandchild and I always thought that there was an exception for me. Now I know that there's not. Death comes for everyone.

Achchi had a good run, a full century, a good Christian life with a just reward, if God wills it as I pray They do. Achchi had a small house but she made it a mansion in heavenly terms. I grew up with so many people who I thought were also grandchildren but they weren't, Achchi just loved a lot of people like that and took care of them without thinking. Her home was always open, not just to us, but to anyone. One of my not-actually-cousins was with her on her last day, just as Achchi was with so many people before. I'm thankful for that. I'm thankful that's in me.

So much of what I am—my fundamental tender-heartedness—comes from my grandparents. The political beliefs in my family are wildly different (and seem to skip generations) but the practical motivation is the same. Politics is an adaptation to different material realities, but the spiritual chain is, I think, unbroken. I must say that I'm worse than my grandparents—I have much more but I don't do that much—but I want to be more like Achchi, I do. God knows we had less of her for years and now we have none at all.

I look at my own children, and the lessons we try to teach them. To be kind. To help people. To give. For my grandmother these were Christian values, for my grandfather these were Christian Socialist values, and they lived them in action. It doesn't actually take a lot of education to arrive at the same conclusions, you could just pay attention in preschool, or read the red parts of the Bible. Share. Care. Be nice to each other. I'm thankful that my kids got to know their great-grandparents, and that their not-so-great parents carry some of those lessons in our blood.

Early this year, Achchi was a bit agitated and kept asking about her 'service'. So her daughter-in-law (my mother) helped organize a church service for her, what I called a pre-funeral until nobody laughed and I shut up. Everyone got up and said nice things about Achchi while Achchi said “what?” But she could still read the speeches and she understood what was going on. Now all the old people want one. Achchi was happy, she literally got her flowers while she was living. She started her final decline after that. Her 100th birthday was her last milestone.

Achchi was lucky, she had a good run—a full century—and a graceful exit surrounded by people that loved her. You can't ask for much more, but as her selfish grandchild I still somehow expected it. Achchi always looked at me like her baby and here I am, still bawling at forty-one. Achchi was a teacher, she was a mother to many, she was a servant of God, but I'm mourning something else entirely. I'm mourning a grandmother, that purest of relationships, if everything works out. Evelyn Samarajiwa was the grandmother that raised me with her own hands. Now I physically feel let down. She's gone and I am alone. Or not.

Now my children are back, crawling all over me, like I crawled over my grandparents once. They look at these pictures of their Loku Achchi and smile, they don't mourn, they don't know. I can't think or write anymore which is maybe a good thing. The tree of family starts with a lot of roots and a few branches, then the roots die, the branches become roots and life goes on. It doesn't for me but I guess I'm on the dying end now.

Rest in peace Evelyn Samarajiwa, my first and last Achchi. I still love you with the heart of a child that only lived in your eyes. As your eyes close, that child is gone. I pray that my children remember you, and carry your spirit on.

Karlof1's Geopolitical Gymnasium at One Year of Age

In June of 2023, I made the decision to move my writing platform from VK to substack for greater audience exposure since many people couldn’t access VK due to Western censorship. I was rather hesitant since substack was already populated with many geopolitical writers, although most were unknown to me. A few trusted souls urged me to make the move, so in July I made the switch and published my first essay which is still very timely as you’ll soon see. Over the year, I’ve published 535 articles or about 1.5 daily, and I’ve accumulated about 2,500 subscribers, almost all free, and have yet to implement the paid function, although that will soon change. Yes, more pledges would be nice, but I didn’t begin writing at VK for the money nor is that my goal here either—the name I chose informs the fact that I aim to inform readers of geopolitical aspects they are unlikely to learn and use primary sources as much as possible in doing so. I also assumed readers would also provide additional information via the comments, and I’m happy to report that assumption is finally being proven correct. According to the stats substack provides its writers, the gym gets an average of 6,666 views daily. There’re subscribers in all 50 states, California being #1 with 133, and globally the Gym’s viewed in 108 nations, with the English-speaking top 4 portion accounting for 54% while Brazil is the top non-English speaking nation with 5% or 117 subscribers. Yes, I’m very pleased with the Gym’s progress. Thank you readers!!!

For my anniversary entry, I’m republishing my first article with a few modifications to the format, not to the textual content which remains very viable.

World to Biden: We Don't Need a "Leading Power"

The most infuriating thing about the US empire is that it accuses others of what it does itself.

Sputnik highlights the #1 world problem that was confessed by Biden today. But before we go further, I highly suggest viewing the above political cartoon again.

"Biden Believes China Wants to 'Replace US as Leading Power'". IMO, the problem is the mindset that the world needs/wants a "leading power" at all. Recall the basis for the UN Charter--all nations are to be considered equal; all are to have the same weight with regard to their voice in international affairs. And clearly with China's Three Initiatives, that's their basic philosophical foundation. The basis for the centuries of competition, rivalries and conflict between nations is based on the Zero-sum idea that One Must Be King of the Hill--that's precisely what's behind the Ukraine Crisis and the Nazi ideology driving it. The Zero-sum garbage of the past is not what China or the RoW desire. What they do desire is Win-Win cooperation where all work together to advance all.

Here are some of the things Biden said that Sputnik reported:

"I'm confident he wants to have the largest economy in the world and have the largest military capacity in the world,' Biden said.

He added that Xi also wanted to rewrite certain rules of the international order, but "not all of them."

"I think so. Not all of them. But he pointed out to me and said we weren't there when those rules were written ... But I don't think he wants, he's looking for a war conflict, expansion of territory," Biden said.

It's plain to see Biden is projecting. Plus, Xi has said he obeys the UN Charter which is the genuine International Order, which is reflected in China being a co-founder along with Russia of the group of Friends in Defense of the UN Charter--if the Outlaw US Empire was truthful about obeying the UN Charter, then why isn't it amongst its defenders? Well, we know very well why that is.

Editor's Note: Some astute foreigners may have noted that America, the most marinated country in the world in terms of capitalist values, has an obsession with "leadership", it's always talking about "developing leaders," yada, yada, yada. There are all kinds of corporate-sponsored contests for the young to "stimulate leadership" (READ: create division according to rank and privilege). Where is this coming from? Older cultures —despite their numerous flaws—did not think in such terms. It stems from the capitalist DNA, the corporate culture, which is essentially a competition jungle, with everyone jockying to displace others and reach the top. Capitalism's most brutal offshoot, Fascism, takes this to the max. That's why in both Germany and Italy the top leaders were literaly revered for their "leadership". Hitler was der Fuhrer, and Mussolini, "il Duce." In Germany, leaving nothing to chance, they even developed the "Fuhrerprinzip". Even the CIA-redacted Wiki has this to say:

In the political history of Germany, the Führerprinzip (Leader Principle) was the basis of executive authority in the Government of Nazi Germany (1933–1945), which meant that the word of the Führer is above all written law, and that government policies, decisions, and offices all work towards the realisation of the will of the Führer.

As for China wanting to have the largest economy, with 1.4 Billion people, it ought to have the largest economy and already does if honest measures were taken. And if there's to be a "World Leader," that person ought to be the United Nations Secretary General, not some national politician. The Era of Great Powers is over and with it the Age of Plunder. Those who are incapable of evolving will be left behind as the world moves to the cooperative basis Nature will dictate that humans will need to adapt to.

///////////////////////////////////////////////

Short wasn’t it? I’m adding this citation from my last article that deals with the Outlaw US Empire’s rationale presented to the public that the confrontation between China and the Empire is a natural outcome of history as proven by a very significant prior event—the stated reasons behind the Peloponnesian War between Sparta and Athens:

One last note on the veracity of the Thucydides Trap hypothesis that’s a clear example of revisionist history that borders on falsification as proven by Dr. Michael Hudson and discussed in his The Collapse of Antiquity on page 111:

The “Thucydides trap” theory recently in vogue trivializes this conflict [The Peloponnesian War] as one simply of geopolitical rivalry, depicting the War as resulting from Spartan jealousy of Athens as a rising rival. But the conflict was domestic as much as foreign, because it was fundamentally about democratic attempts to limit oligarchic wealth. There was no commercial rivalry between Sparta and Athens, because Sparta was not a commercial economy. The conflict was between oligarchic and democratic power and the alliances resulting from domestic class antagonisms. This conflict existed within both Athenian and Spartan society, not merely between the two. [My Emphasis]

A great many people were deluded by the hypothesis and tried to use it as justification for a more aggressive Outlaw US Empire policy toward China, which IMO is why the hypothesis was formulated. Hudson proved beyond doubt that Sparta wasn’t a commercial/trading nation so there’s no way any sort of rivalry/jealousy could emerge between Athens and Sparta on those grounds. The difference is as summarized above and explained further in the text that preceded it. And the differences between China and the Outlaw US Empire are rather similar in that they’re grounded in their political-economies and governing philosophies which are the reasons for China’s rise and the Outlaw Empire’s fall.

///////////////////////////////

Thanks again to all the readers and subscribers that continue to provide the motivation for me to do what I’m doing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can only hope Year Two will be as successful as Year One!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Like what you’ve been reading at Karlof1’s Substack? Then please consider subscribing and choosing to make a monthly/yearly pledge to enable my efforts in this challenging realm. Thank You!

CBS Sunday

YouTube, run by piles of excrement, and owned by same, all part of Censorship Central carrying out the orders needed to protect the Deep State narrative, is clearly shadowbanning this important video. They KNOW that the "age-restricted" label dampens traffic by a substantial amount. In fact, a topic like this, of this quality, and aired originally on CBS, a major US network, should have garnered hundreds of thousands of views. The count so far shows only 33K (on YouTube itself). And that's a joke. As a result, to rescue this document, we had to spend respectable time and money to produce a Rumble version (see bottom of the page), not subject to censorship or other shenanigans Google/YouTube routinely engage in. It would have been nice if CBS, a huge global mass communications corporation, had made these videos easier to obtain by the public, but they are also part of the problem, as their innumerable distortions on all topics of maximum interest, from the Ukraine War to the events in the Middle East and beyond, bear the stamp of Western disinformation.

The Philippines: Why it is Choosing US Destruction Over Chinese Construction

The Philippines: Why it is Choosing US Destruction Over Chinese Construction

While the ongoing conflict in Ukraine continues to dominate headlines, occasionally news stories surface regarding growing tensions in the Asia-Pacific region as well. Driven primarily by the US, these headlines also include the proxies Washington is using to stir up an Ukraine-style conflict in the region.

Among these proxies is the Southeast Asian archipelago nation of The Philippines.

The South China Morning Post in a late June 2024 article titled, “China-Philippines ties on ‘brink of total breakdown’: unpacking the collapse,” would claim to provide an explanation as to why once constructive ties between Beijing and Manila have deteriorated into what may possibly become a destructive confrontation.

The article describes how concrete pillars of a rail project being built with China, have since been torn down, and instead, construction in the Philippines now consists of military bases to be used to point missiles atChina.

The article claims:

What began as a story of infrastructure cooperation has morphed into an epic tale of betrayal and confrontation, the once-chummy relationship between Manila and Beijing giving way to escalating geopolitical rivalry.

As with many pro-Western accounts of growing Chinese-Philippine tensions, the article omits the political transition from the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte to that of now President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., and how the independent foreign policy of President Duterte was overwritten by the pro-Washington policy of President Marcos Jr.

Maritime disputes treated as minor bilateral concerns to be worked out with Beijing under President Duterte, were escalated into a growing conflict under President Marcos Jr. with US backing, meant to serve as the very pretext to cancel and literally tear down joint Chinese-Philippine projects and replace it with the expansion of the US military’s footprint across the Philippines.

Beijing claims growing tensions specifically over the Second Thomas Shoal, a mostly submerged shoal in the South China Sea, followed the breaking of an agreement with China to suspend Filipino resupply missions to a grounded WW2 ship at the shoal during the Duterte administration. Under the Marcos Jr. administration, resupply missions resumed with Manila, claiming no such agreement was ever made.

China has since released audio recordings of the agreement, causing Manila to backpedal and claim the agreement was not official.

The question becomes, why has Manila decided to choose confrontation with Beijing rather than cooperation?

The answer is Manila did not choose between confrontation and cooperation, Washington did. Far from defending Philippine sovereignty from “Chinese aggression,” growing tensions between China and the Philippines is a direct result from the Philippines’ own sovereignty already being stripped from it through its political capture by Washington.

The US, through the National Endowment for Democracy (NED*) and adjacent organizations has invested for decades millions of dollars a year to influence and interfere in the internal political affairs of nations around the globe, including the Philippines, to shift the respective foreign policies of targeted nations from serving their own best interests to serving Washington’s.

US government-funded media outlets in the Philippines like Rappler, founded by Maria Ressa, a dual US-Philippine citizen, former CNN employee, who also works directly for the NED* as well as receiving funding from the NED*, have an entire section on their homepage dedicated to news about what they call the, “West Philippine Sea.”

The US-funded media platform fits into a wider strategy of manipulating Philippine public perception regarding China, specifically to poison the Philippine public against China.
In this specific instance, Rappler and others aim at convincing the public that China poses a threat to Philippine sovereignty and territorial integrity while convincing the Philippine people to allow US military basing on their own territory and to redirect more public funds from development and infrastructure, to be spent instead on military spending including on facilities for US troops to operate out of, and on US weapons sold to the Philippines itself.

Recently, Reuters exposed other instances of the US government deliberately and malicious manipulating the Philippine public with the intent of poisoning them against China.

In its investigative report, “Pentagon ran secret anti-vax campaign to undermine China during pandemic,” it admits:

[The clandestine operation] aimed to sow doubt about the safety and efficacy of vaccines and other life-saving aid that was being supplied by China, a Reuters investigation found. Through phony internet accounts meant to impersonate Filipinos, the military’s propaganda efforts morphed into an anti-vax campaign. Social media posts decried the quality of face masks, test kits and the first vaccine that would become available in the Philippines – China’s Sinovac inoculation.

Reuters, citing US officials and healthcare experts, admitted that the campaign wasn’t based on a “public health perspective,” but simply aimed to “drag China through the mud,” and endangered the lives of the Philippine public in the process.

While Washington has convinced the Philippine public through US government-funded media that China poses a threat to the Philippines, in actuality it is the US government itself demonstrably harming the Philippines and its people through what are admitted are deliberate lies.

Its campaign to poison the Philippines against China, resulting in canceled public infrastructure projects in exchange for a US-backed military build up threatening to drag the country into armed conflict to fight Washington’s adversary on its behalf and at the Philippines’ own expense is only the most recent chapter in a long, sad story of Washington’s abuse and exploitation of the Philippines.

Washington’s History of Manipulating, Abusing the Philippines

Omitted from pro-Western coverage of the current tensions between the Philippines and China and the supposed threat an “expansionist” China poses to the Philippines, is the fact that it was the US who actually colonized the Philippines from 1899-1946, brutally suppressing a war for independence fought by the Philippine people against American occupation.

The US State Department’s own Office of the Historian admits US forces, “burned villages, implemented civilian reconcentration policies, and employed torture on suspected guerrillas,” resulting in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Filipinos.

The US State Department’s Office of the Historian also discussed a “policy of attraction,” which was “designed to win over key elites and other Filipinos.”

Even after the US officially recognized Philippine independence in 1946, through first the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and then the NED*, the US continued a “policy of attraction” meant to manipulate both the Philippine government and its population to serve US interests even at the expense of the nation’s own best interests.

While those in the Philippines, including Rappler, claim that the NED* is not equivalent to the CIA and that the NED* is “promoting democracy” rather than regime change, the Western media itself over the years has admitted that the NED* was created specifically to take over regime change operations previously carried out by the CIA to make such operations more politically acceptable.

A 1997 New York Times article titled, “Political Meddling by Outsiders: Not New for the U.S.,” would discuss the role the NED* plays in US interference around the globe and specifically in regard to China itself.
The article would admit:

[The US Congress} routinely appropriates tens of millions of dollars in covert and overt money to use in influencing domestic politics abroad.

The National Endowment for Democracy*, created 15 years ago to do in the open what the Central Intelligence Agency has done surreptitiously for decades, spends $30 million a year [the actual amount is probably several times higher, with fluffy accounting] to support things like political parties, labor unions, dissident movements and the news media in dozens of countries, including China.

More recently, The Guardian in 2004 admitted the US NED* and its subsidiaries carried out regime change operations in Serbia, Georgia, Belarus, and Ukraine.

And in 2011, the New York Times would admit the so-called “Arab Spring,” was the result of years of preparations carried out by the NED* in cooperation with US-based tech giants like Google and Facebook preparing opposition groups from North Africa and the Middle East to overthrow their respective governments.

It is not that the NED* has previously engaged in regime change, it’s that the NED* itself is a regime-change organization and those receiving funding from the NED* play a role in undermining a nation’s sovereignty and aiding the US in politically capturing that nation.

It shouldn’t be a surprise, then, that US-funded organizations lying about public health or national security threats would also lie about their own funding and their relationship to those in Washington providing it.

Washington’s Anti-China Agenda is Objectively Threatening the Philippines

It can be objectively concluded that it is not in the Philippines’ best interests to escalate an ordinary maritime dispute with China into a potential conflict involving the US military on Philippine shores and along its coastlines, and ultimately serving Washington’s open ambitions to contain China.

exports go to China, while only 14% (less than half) go to the US.

imports come from China, with only 6% coming from the United States.

Does starting a war over a grounded WW2 ship on a submerged shoal with its largest trade partner serve the Philippines’ best interests? Or does it serve Washington’s interests at the expense of the Philippines? The SCMP article already illustrated how badly needed public infrastructure has literally been torn down in exchange for escalating tensions with the Philippines’ largest trade partner, China.

One needs not guess where this will lead the Philippines if it continues to serve US interests by escalating tensions with China because the same process is already well underway in Ukraine.

In Ukraine, the US successfully poisoned the population against Russia through likewise US government-funded media and political organizations, installed into power a pro-Washington government, militarized the nation, and aided in precipitating a conflict with neighboring Russia resulting in a self-destructive war Ukraine is irreversibly losing.

The US is repeating this process in the Philippines. It spends money funding organizations like Rappler to convince ordinary people, otherwise looking out for their best interests, to choose war over economic opportunities, real development, infrastructure spending, better healthcare, and better education.

It requires constant effort to convince people that somehow hating and confronting their largest most important economic partner, on behalf of their former colonial master, is somehow in their best interests.

Genuinely Defending Sovereignty

Nations in the region must secure not only their borders with armies, shores with navies, and airspace with air forces, but also their information space, political space, academic and cultural space, all from foreign infiltration and capture. The price is just as high as when a foreign nation breaches these spaces as when they breach borders, shores, and airspace.

Bills should be passed to prohibit foreign interference, banning NED* and other foreign-funded organizations and political parties. Investments should be made in creating genuine local media outlets. Academia should be made up of qualified professors with real-world skills to teach students how to build up their nation, not divide and destroy it. Culture should be preserved, celebrated, and added to, rather than undermined, defamed, and erased.

A nation that has a military to secure their physical domains but have left all other domains unprotected – even overrun by foreign influence and interference – have failed just as badly as if they failed to stop an outright military invasion.

Ukraine is a living – or more accurately – dying example of what failure to genuinely protect a nation looks like.

While people in the Philippines are meant to believe China is a threat and that fighting against China is in their best interests, the fact that they’ve been turned against China in the first place means they’ve already lost to foreign invasion – not by China – but by their old and now renewed colonial rulers in Washington, and not along their shores, but within their information and political spaces.
