Yahya Sinwar, the right man at the right time?

A Cradle Contributor

AUG 8, 2024

The future of Palestine is at a critical juncture, marked by significant regional and international events reshaping the conflict with Israel, which introduces new challenges and fresh opportunities, both.

One such event was Israel’s catastrophic 31 July assassination of Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, where he was to attend the inauguration ceremony of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

Tel Aviv’s decision to assassinate the pragmatic, relatively moderate top Palestinian negotiator while he was a guest of the Islamic Republic was seen as a blatant transgression of all boundaries. This act was also intended to eliminate any prospects of a lasting ceasefire, which Tel Aviv views as a political defeat of its war on Gaza.

The martyrdom of Haniyeh at such a critical juncture raised questions regarding the future leadership of the Palestinian resistance movement, particularly given the assassination of his deputy, Saleh al-Arouri, in Beirut’s southern suburb earlier this year.

It was the same area in which Israel killed Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr just a day before Haniyeh’s assassination.

For the past 10 months, Gaza’s Palestinians have faced what can be described as a war of extermination, with the Israeli occupation targeting all facets of Palestinian life and systematically eliminating resistance leaders both domestically and abroad.

Thus, the announcement this week of Yahya Sinwar’s election as Haniyeh’s successor in Gaza was both a surprise to the Israeli occupation and a cause for celebration among Palestinians and their factions.

Why Yahya Sinwar? Why now?

Sinwar was a natural choice for several reasons. He was Haniyeh’s deputy and the head of Hamas in the Gaza Strip, which positioned him as the immediate successor following Arouri’s assassination.

As a leading architect of last year’s Operation Al-Aqsa Flood, Sinwar’s appointment can be seen as a direct challenge to Tel Aviv, reaffirming Hamas’ commitment to armed resistance and demonstrating confidence in his strategic capabilities.

Furthermore, Sinwar’s close relationship with the Qassam Brigades, Hamas’ military wing, enables him to effectively manage both the political and military affairs of the movement. His strong connections with key regional allies, including Iran, Hezbollah, and the broader Resistance Axis, bolster Hamas’ strategic position.

Another considered candidate for the top post, Khaled Meshaal, despite being Haniyeh’s deputy and a former head of the political bureau, chose not to throw his hat into the leadership ring this time around.

Meshaal, whose relations with Tehran and Damascus have been strained due to his support for the Syrian opposition, had earlier indicated his unwillingness to lead. This enables him to focus on diplomatic efforts and maintaining relationships with key Hamas political and financial partners like Qatar and Turkiye.

His decision paved the way for a unanimous consensus on Sinwar’s leadership, deemed more suited for the current militarized context, in which tested and solid ties with Tehran and other members of West Asia’s Axis of Resistance are viewed as essential.

New challenges under Sinwar’s watch

Although Hamas’ political bureau and General Shura Council, led by interim caretaker Abu Omar Hassan, elected Yahya Sinwar as the movement’s new leader, his appointment has received widespread support from Palestinian factions and national figures, who see it as a continuation of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood and the rightful political response to the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh.

But what does this succession mean for the future of negotiations and a lasting ceasefire in Gaza? Sinwar, it should be noted, has overseen past negotiations, managed the Palestinian prisoners’ file, and has an in-depth understanding of Israeli society, having spent over 20 years in Israeli prisons where he learned Hebrew.

He is, therefore, expected to maintain the talks currently underway, which will be led by the deputy head of Hamas in Gaza, Khalil al-Hayya, under Sinwar’s general supervision.

Palestinian reconciliation, regional alliances

On 23 July, an agreement was signed in Beijing, China, between Fatah, Hamas, and other Palestinian factions, with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s oversight. Sinwar supports reconciliation and the formation of the proposed national unity government, an important breakthrough for Palestinian unification.

His history of engineering the Beach Agreement in 2014 and handing over crossings to the Palestinian Authority (PA) in 2017 demonstrates his commitment to national partnership and reconciliation, even with US and Israeli-backed PA President Mahmoud Abbas. Sinwar is expected to strengthen these efforts further in his new leadership role.

At the regional level, the new Hamas chief prioritizes relationships with Iran, Lebanon, and Egypt. Despite having normalized relations with Israel, Cairo is seen by Sinwar as a crucial neighbor due to its proximity to Gaza and historical interactions. Equally, he looks to Lebanon for Hezbollah’s support and Iran for its strategic backing and provision of weapons and expertise.

One of Sinwar’s speeches summarized his regional outlook. In it, he invoked a hadith of the Prophet Muhammad: “A soldier in the Levant, a soldier in Iraq, and a soldier in Yemen,” which reflects his strategic vision of the Unity of Fronts

Additionally, Sinwar has expressed interest in strengthening ties with Russia and China, indicating his broad international vision of a multipolar order.

A defining moment for the Palestinian resistance

A formidable threat to the Israeli occupation, Sinwar is viewed by Tel Aviv as the primary architect of Al-Aqsa Flood. Israeli leadership, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, believes the conflict cannot end without Sinwar’s assassination.

Hamas, therefore, faces the challenge of protecting its current leader, while Sinwar must continue to confront and lead the resistance against the US-backed occupation army.

Should Israel’s campaign of ethnic cleansing subside with Sinwar still leading, substantial changes are anticipated. He has the potential to transform the resilience of Gaza’s people into political achievements and strengthen ties throughout West Asia’s Axis of Resistance.

The coming days present both challenges and opportunities for Hamas under Yahya Sinwar’s leadership. The movement has a real chance to solidify its position and implement substantial policy and strategic shifts, coinciding with enhanced tactical support from Tehran, Sanaa, and Beirut as they prepare for long-overdue reprisals against the occupation entity.

You Can Only Support Trump Or Harris If You Don’t See The US Empire For The Beast It Is

Be sure to distribute this article as widely as possible. Pushing back against the Big Lie is really up to you.

Listen to a reading of this article (reading by Tim Foley):

People who think of either Donald Trump or Kamala Harris as decent or acceptable simply have not realized how immensely evil you have to be to become a US president.

In order to support either Harris or Trump you need to have an extreme ignorance of the murderousness and depravity of the US empire, which they both serve. Only a complete failure to see and understand the vast scale of the abusiveness of the US power structure could cause you to view these two candidates as meaningfully different from each other — let alone see one of them as decent enough to be worthy of your support.

Both Trump and Harris are auditioning for a role that will necessarily entail the creation of mountains of human corpses by US-sponsored violence, as has every viable US presidential candidate throughout our lives.

This is because the US empire is deeply evil. Not the country called the United States in and of itself, but the globe-spanning power structure which functions as an empire that’s structured around it. This vast power structure is held together by rivers of human blood, and if you’re the Democratic or Republican nominee to lead it as president then you are necessarily a deeply evil person, because you have sufficiently assured all the necessary powers that be that you will continue that bloodshed in order to become the nominee.

Most Americans (and most westerners generally) fail to truly see and understand how profoundly evil the US-centralized empire is, which is the only thing that allows all this political energy to go into pretending there are these hugely significant differences between the Democrat and the Republican presidential candidate every four years. If they could really ingest the scale of the empire’s brutality and tyranny with a deep sense of empathy for their fellow human beings upon whom it is inflicted, they would never support anyone who is pledged to help operate the slaughter machine, and they would not see any would-be operators of that machine as meaningfully different from any other. All they would see is the need for the slaughter machine to be dismantled.

Both Trump and Harris are auditioning for a role that will necessarily entail the creation of mountains of human corpses by US-sponsored violence, as has every viable US presidential candidate throughout our lives.  This is because the US empire is deeply evil.

The most sophisticated propaganda engine ever created exists to prevent this understanding from taking root, in the west generally and in the United States in particular. Americans are the most propagandized population on this planet, and their propaganda indoctrination is at its most intensive during the quadrennial performance ritual known as the US presidential race. The whole thing is geared toward falsely exaggerating the differences between the two candidates while drawing emphasis away from the 99 percent of the issues on which they are indistinguishable from each other. And those 99 percent similarities happen to be on all the most murderous and tyrannical behaviors of the US government.

If Americans weren’t so aggressively propagandized and indoctrinated, this would all be obvious to them, and this election race performance wouldn’t get them clapping along like children at a puppet show. The abusive status quo necessary for maintaining the US-centralized empire would not be consented to at all, and would be forced to collapse. There’s too much power riding on preventing this from happening for Americans to be allowed to have a real say in their elections, so they are propagandized to the gills into clapping along instead.

Liberals are freaking out because The Los Angeles Times and The Washington Post chose not to endorse a presidential candidate this election cycle, which is silly. Newspapers shouldn’t endorse political candidates. How is this not obvious to everyone?

It’s absolutely ridiculous that news outlets endorsing political candidates is a thing at all. The first job of a real journalist is to have an adversarial relationship with those in power, regardless of who wins. The only correct political position from the perspective of journalistic ethics is “If you are in power I will do everything I can to expose all your lies and misdeeds, no matter what your party or platform happens to be.” This position is vastly more important in the US, the nation with the world’s most powerful government, and becomes more important the more influence your news outlet has.

If you are campaigning for one side or the other, you’ve obviously hurt your ability to take this position. You’re communicating a line of favoritism not only to the public, but to your outlet’s staff, and to the politicians you’re meant to be holding to account. You’re making decisions which can help or hinder your outlet’s ability to gain access to an administration once in office by doing or not doing what amounts to a political favor for them. The press should not be doing political favors for any political candidate, and the expectation that they should inhibits their ability to do critical journalism.

Obviously news outlets have biases like anyone else, and they should do everything they can to bring transparency to those biases. But that should look like saying “Yes we have an ideological bias, so here’s what we’re doing to prevent that from skewing our coverage of the powerful,” not “Everybody please vote for Candidate X because we like them more than Candidate Y.”

The whole controversy is stupid. The LA Times and Washington Post shouldn’t be endorsing a presidential candidate. No news outlet should, at least if they purport to be engaged in journalism rather than political activism.

Back when people used to watch TV they’d complain that there’s “a hundred channels and nothing on,” and they were right: there WAS nothing on that was worth watching. Mainstream culture was just that vapid and worthless — and it still is. There’s nothing in it that fulfills us, that nourishes us in the ways we long to be nourished, that tells us real things in a real way about the world as it actually is. People would flip through TV channels disgusted at the emptiness of it all because that’s all they were being presented with: empty drivel with no edifying or transformative value.

People experience the same thing today when scrolling through their online media feeds and streaming services. They’re searching for something true and meaningful, but unless you’ve been lucky enough to stumble into a rare corner of the internet where real things are being discussed, all the algorithm feeds you is propaganda and distraction. Mindless entertainment. Celebrities. Gossip. Mainstream electoral politics. Donald Trump.

For generations we’ve been corralled toward streams of information which are designed to turn us into idiots and sociopaths. Designed to keep us from getting good information about what the powerful people who rule us are really up to. To dull our curiosity and keep us from asking useful and penetrating questions about our society. To direct any political impulses we might be able to muster in this confusing fog toward mainstream political factions which all support the status quo. To stop us from looking too closely at the death and misery our government inflicts upon people in far away countries. To keep us from noticing that we live in a mind-controlled dystopia that is fueled by endless exploitation, abuse, mass military violence, and ecocide. To keep us mindlessly turning the gears of the empire and trusting our rulers to sort things out on our behalf. To keep us sedated and compliant instead of brilliant and inconvenient.

It takes work to get outside of that matrix of manipulation. It takes time to find good sources of information and ingest what they’ve got to teach us. It takes effort to find our way into depth and meaning inside this fraudulent empire. But that’s what we all ache for. That’s what kept people flipping through channels in frustration in the glory days of television. They were looking for the depth. They were searching for something authentic. Something real.

Forming a truth-based relationship with reality can be difficult, but it’s a necessary step if you want to be an authentic person and come out of that itching sense of dissatisfaction which all controlled minds must inevitably experience. This is the only path to real and lasting happiness. Until then all you get is the fake decoy happiness they try to sell you in advertisements and Hollywood movies that comes from always getting your way and owning the right products and achieving all your goals and having a compelling personal story to tell people. This isn’t real happiness. It cannot last. It cannot satisfy.

Only truth can lead to satisfaction. And everything in this fake plastic dystopia is structured around preventing us from ever finding it.

Israel Launches Limited Strikes on Iran

The days when the US and the West could overfly other nations' airspace with impunity is now over.

  • As time continues to run out for the US and its proxies, the temptation to resort to extreme measures will increase, requiring Iran and its allies to continue carefully managing escalation.

How October 7 Unmasked the True Terrorists of The Middle East.

George’s Newsletter is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

It’s been a partnership that has waged a brutal campaign of expansionism, occupation, and targetted assassinations – always masked as "self-defence" but now seen for what it truly is—a systematic drive to dominate the region at any cost.

Since Israel’s creation in 1948, it has pursued a relentless agenda of ethnic cleansing and territorial expansion, uprooting more than 700,000 Palestinians during the Nakba, followed by decades, a quest to expand its borders through military occupation, illegal settlements, and apartheid policies which have rendered Palestinians as second-class citizens in their own homeland – this has been an ongoing project of Zionist expansionism, with the aim to control the Middle East.

When Hamas launched a large-scale operation against Israeli forces last year, it was a direct response to decades of occupation, apartheid, and violent subjugation. It wasn’t an unprovoked attack but a desperate cry for freedom from a people who have been trapped under an Israeli-imposed blockade for 17 years, subjected to regular bombardments, and deprived of basic human rights.

The West's portrayal of it as a “terrorist massacre” disregards the daily, ongoing terror faced by Palestinians—bombings, home demolitions, arbitrary arrests, and the killing of civilians.

For decades, the narrative of “self-defence” has been weaponised to justify the most heinous acts of violence, from bombings that level entire city blocks in Gaza to assassinations of political leaders in Lebanon, Syria, and Iran, by Israel and the US.

October 7 also cast a harsh light on Israel's wider pattern of aggression across the region, which has gone largely unchallenged. In Lebanon, Israel has repeatedly launched unlawful and illegal attacks, violating Lebanese sovereignty and targetting Hezbollah, while inflicting significant civilian casualties. The attacks aren’t isolated incidents but part of Israel’s strategy to suppress any form of resistance to its regional dominance.

The assassination of Imad Mughniyeh, Hezbollah commander Faoud Shukr, and other high-profile targets—including Hamas leaders like Yahya Sinwar and Ismail Haniyeh—are framed as counter-terrorism but what they really are, is, targeted state executions meant to weaken and intimidate Arab resistance.

The assassination of Iranian generals, notably Qasem Soleimani in a US-Israel coordinated drone strike in Baghdad, further demonstrates the lengths to which these powers will go to maintain dominance in the region. Israel’s recent escalation in Syria, including the bombing of the Iranian consulate in Damascus, and attacks on Iranian positions, has been part of a campaign to undermine Iranian influence and assert control over the geopolitical landscape of the Middle East.

Yesterday's escalatory bombing attack by Israel on Iran underscores Israel's willingness to provoke broader regional conflicts, with the US's tacit or direct support.

America’s complicity in Israel’s crimes is undeniable. US foreign policy has consistently aligned with Israeli interests, whether through diplomatic support or military interventions that have destabilised the region. The Iraq War, sanctions on Syria, and the military presence in Lebanon have all served to weaken Arab nations while strengthening Israel’s strategic position.

October 7 should be understood not as the starting point of violence but as a moment that exposed the layers of aggression, deceit, and oppression that have long defined the Israeli-US alliance in the Middle East. Portraying Arabs as the primary aggressors has been a deliberate narrative constructed to justify Israeli and American wars, occupations, and covert operations. It has obscured who the real terrorists are—state actors who employ massive military power, intelligence operations, and economic coercion to maintain control.

For decades, the narrative of “self-defence” has been weaponised to justify the most heinous acts of violence, from bombings that level entire city blocks in Gaza to assassinations of political leaders in Lebanon, Syria, and Iran, by Israel and the US. It’s been rhetoric that has provided cover for genocidal policies which have aimed to erase Palestinian resistance and ensure Israeli hegemony over the Middle East.

The language of “terrorism” has been selectively applied to non-state actors while state-led terror is normalised, and even celebrated, throughout the Western.

The true sources of terror in the Middle East are not Hamas, Hezbollah, or Iran, but the systemic violence of the Israeli state, reinforced by US imperialism. It’s the combination of military might, economic dominance, and political manipulation that has perpetuated a cycle of violence and war and prevented any meaningful path to peace. The global community must confront the reality that this conflict is not about defence, but about occupation, expansion, and the unrelenting ambition to control the region.

While global awareness continues to grow, so too does the urgency to demand accountability from the real aggressors – Israel and America along with its allies. The international community must reject the false narrative of “Arab terrorism” and address the ongoing state terror that has devastated millions of lives.

It’s not the Arabs who have been the terrorists, but rather the architects of colonial expansion, supported by American power, that have destabilised the region and inflicted unimaginable suffering on its people.
