Google workers demand end to company’s involvement in drone murder

Sundar Pinchai, Google's current CEO, represents the perfect integration of the global corporate system with US transnational power. His personal fortune is put between $650MM and 1bn. Guess if this guy is ever going to do anything ethical to endanger his huge fortune.

Revelations last month that Google was designing software for the US military’s illegal drone warfare program have sparked outrage among employees. More than 3,000 Google workers have signed a letter to executives demanding that it end its involvement with the Pentagon.

The program, known as “Project Maven,” involves the use of artificial intelligence systems to analyze drone footage, potentially assisting the Pentagon in identifying targets for drone assassinations, which have led to the deaths of tens of thousands of people, most of them bystanders, across the Middle East and North Africa. Google’s involvement in the program was reported by Gizmodo last month.

The letter, addressed to CEO Sundar Pichai, declares, “We believe that Google should not be in the business of war. Therefore we ask that Project Maven be cancelled, and that Google draft, publicize and enforce a clear policy stating that neither Google nor its contractors will ever build warfare technology.”

Responding to earlier criticism by Google employees last month, Diane Greene, CEO of the company’s cloud business, said the software would not “operate or fly drones” and “will not be used to launch weapons.”

The letter points to the growing divide between the employees of technology companies, among the most highly-skilled workers anywhere in the world—many of whom have imbibed an ethos of opposition to concentrated power, surveillance, and the military—and leading executives determined to integrate Google, Facebook, and Twitter into the military/intelligence apparatus.

The letter dismisses these feeble pretexts, declaring, “While this eliminates a narrow set of direct applications, the technology is being built for the military, and once it’s delivered it could easily be used to assist in these tasks.”

The US government’s drone murder program, involving the assassination of people without trial, violates both the US Constitution and international law, implicating Google in activity that could lead to criminal prosecution.

The letter warns that the company’s actions “will irreparably damage Google’s brand,” and that “by entering into this contract, Google will join the ranks of companies like Palantir, Raytheon, and General Dynamics. The argument that other firms, like Microsoft and Amazon, are participating doesn’t make this any less risky for Google. Google’s unique history, its motto Don’t Be Evil, and its direct reach into the lives of billions of users sets it apart.”

In concludes, “Building this technology to assist the US Government in military surveillance—and potentially lethal outcomes—is not acceptable.”

Google’s relationship with the military is in fact not new. Eric Schmidt, the executive chairman for Google from 2001 to 2017, has a position on the Pentagon’s Defense Advisory Board, along with Google Vice President Milo Medin.

While workers at technology companies are some of the best-paid in the United States, nearly all of them are compelled to work grueling schedules, regularly involving workweeks of at least 60 hours, making raising a family nearly impossible. Much of their salary is taken up by housing costs. Rents have shot up by more than 50 percent in the San Francisco Bay area, the most expensive real estate market in America. The average one-bedroom apartment rent is $3,390 per month, forcing some workers to live in their cars.

Amid a growing nationwide strike wave that has led to walkouts by teachers in West Virginia and Oklahoma, technology workers throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, the United States, and the world no doubt increasingly feel themselves at odds with their employers, who lured many away from careers in the sciences with promises of “changing the world” for the better.

Now, these workers are being told by these same executives to create systems for mass murder, surveillance, and censorship.

The New York Times, which first reported the letter, wrote that it could not get a single employee to speak on the record, no doubt testifying to the climate of intimidation and repression within the company.

Google’s relationship with the military is connected to its involvement, along with Facebook and other technology companies, in the effort to censor the Internet. Beginning in April, Google modified its search algorithms “to surface more authoritative content,” claiming that this was aimed at countering “the phenomenon of ‘fake news.’”

As the WSWS documented in an open letter to Google sent in August, the aim of these changes was “to restrict public awareness of and access to socialist, anti-war and left-wing websites.” The consequences of the changes included a nearly 70 percent (now more than 75 percent) drop in Google referrals to the WSWS.

At the time, the WSWS noted that Google’s moves to align itself with the demands of the military/intelligence apparatus would inevitably engender opposition within the company. These warnings have been confirmed.

Google’s actions last year were followed by similar moves by Facebook in January, when it announced changes to its News Feed to material from “broadly trusted and high-quality sources,” a euphemism for the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and other corporate news publications.

Last month, Google also announced a new “News Initiative” aimed at elevating “authoritative content” in its widely-used Google News section.

The involvement of Google with the military and its collaboration with intelligence agencies in censoring information online are two sides of the same process. As the ruling class prepares for an immense expansion of war and domestic repression, it is seeking to utilize the services of the giant technology companies.

These connection between war, internet censorship and the growth of working class struggles will be the topic of a WSWS conference on April 22 in Detroit, Michigan. We encourage all our readers to make plans to attend.

The Best Definition of Donald Trump We Have Found

In his zeal to prove to his antagonists in the War Party that he is as bloodthirsty as their champion, Hillary Clinton, and more manly than Barack Obama, Trump seems to have gone “play-crazy” — acting like an unpredictable maniac in order to terrorize the Russians into forcing some kind of dramatic concessions from their Syrian allies, or risk Armageddon. However, the “play-crazy” gambit can only work when the leader is, in real life, a disciplined and intelligent actor, who knows precisely what actual boundaries must not be crossed. That ain’t Donald Trump — a pitifully shallow and ill-disciplined man, emotionally handicapped by obscene privilege and cognitively crippled by white American chauvinism. By pushing Trump into a corner and demanding that he display his most bellicose self, or be ceaselessly mocked as a “puppet” and minion of Russia, a lesser power, the War Party and its media and clandestine services have created a perfect storm of mayhem that may consume us all. Gonzo Journalist Seeks Meaningful Employment

by Johnny Lightning

It's not that I've ever attempted to emulate Hunter S. Thompson.  Although we never met, our paths through life and writing styles have had a number of parallels.  Fast, exotic cars, reckless, rampant, enthusiastic alcohol and drug use, dislike of formal education, and contempt for laws, authority, and pig-fuckers to name a few.  That plus a literary style which draws its power from profanity, sarcasm, humor, and which departs radically from traditional journalistic objectivity.  Big differences being, of course, that he was wildly successful, ran with a crowd of celebrities, and had a knack for running sentences together into humungous, wickedly irreverent paragraphs.  Nonetheless, we're brothers who never met, separated in time and space.  He's long gone.  Splattered his brains on the wall at 67.  Now I'm pushing 70, and understand fully his frustration with old age when he wrote his suicide note:

"No more games.  No more bombs.  No more walking.  No more fun.  No more swimming.  67.  That is 17 years past 50.  17 more than I needed or wanted.  Boring.  I am always bitchy.  No fun-for anybody.  67.  You are getting Greedy.  Act your old age.  Relax-This won't hurt."

Hunter S. Thompson: Maybe he was on to something we haven't fathomed yet.

That's what sometimes happens when youth and vitality give way to old age and exhaustion.  Blam!  Fucking brains on the wall, and a life extinguished.  Perhaps I'm fortunate that I've never shared Hunter's love affair with firearms.  Or perhaps he was infinitely wise, and I'd be much better off dead.  We're born, we reproduce, we die.  It's doubtful that I'll be leaving behind any more progeny.  The so-called golden years suck.  No more excitement.  No more hope.  No more enthusiasm.  No more mountains to climb.  Nothing more to look forward to than an alcohol-induced buzz at the end of the boring day to ease the pain, impotence, and frustration of being forced to watch my own government, well into the process of flushing all hopes and dreams of my grandchildren's future down history's shithole.  And all I'm able to do is write.  Preaching to a small, mutual admiration society.  Pissing futilely into the wind.  A puny, weak stream that blows right back into my blotchy old face.  It's become obvious that I'm likely doomed to die with a whimper.

However, in lieu of self-immolation or hara-kiri, I now seek death with a meaningful bang.  This is a formal job application.  If I have a hero, it's certainly Che Guevara.  A giant of a man who put truth, justice, and righteousness before his own safety.  His lifelong, but all too short, battle against earth's oppressors is inspiring and legendary.  The machine, against which he fought, has grown a hundred times uglier and more powerful since it dug Che's grave and chopped off his hands.  Waging war the way he did is a laughable act of futility, and anyone who tries will likely be swatted and squashed like a fly.  However, that's exactly the job for which I now apply.  After all, Che and Fidel pulled off an unlikely victory in Cuba, and the result is a shining light for all those who dare question the basic goodness and exceptionalism of Empire.  Better to go out knowing that I've at least temporarily irritated the fuck out of the enemy than to live out my days drooling and soiling myself in some nursing home hallway.  Better to die on my feet rather than to live on my knees, as Senor Zapata used to say.

A bloodless revolution seems to be out of the question.  John Rachel, my cadre in Japan, has a viable plan in The Peace Dividend, but can't even get the attention of major anti-war groups.  Capitalism spoils everything it touches.  As Chris Hedges says, here in Empire "doctors destroy health, lawyers destroy justice, universities destroy knowledge, governments destroy freedom, the press destroys information, religion destroys morals, and our banks destroy the economy."  The Peace Dividend, which would theoretically elect honest politicians, defund the war machine, and reward every American voter monetarily for doing so, can't grow wings and fly...largely because anti-war organizations refuse to acknowledge The Peace Dividend, have been tainted by the poison of capitalism, and the last thing they truly seek is peace.  Without war, their profitable organizations would perish...and anti-war organizations destroy peace.  Pig-fuckers wear many hats.

I'm game for just about any plan that has a chance of success.  Let me rephrase that.  I'm willing to risk my life for any plan that has a snowball's chance in hell of overthrowing the existing republocratic/corporate media stranglehold on this sham democracy, pulling off a coup d'etat in D.C., and throwing all the soulless war-profiteers, politicians, and military/intelligence agency top brass into prisons where they belong.  I will gladly feed the tree of liberty my own blood, if I find the proper longshot windmill to tilt.  I will become armed and dangerous to the status quo for the right cause, but will need some guidance, since I've never fired a real bullet before.  I even have a knockoff Che beret which I bought a few Halloweens ago...and as The Argentine once said:  "We cannot be sure of having something to live for, unless we're willing to die for it."

Once upon a time, I thought the character John Yossarian from Joseph Heller's "Catch 22" was on the money when he said:  "The enemy is anybody who's going to get you killed..."but I'm not married to any ideas in particular, am not too proud or stubborn to change my mind, and I've come around to thinking that the enemy is anybody who seeks my silence, obedience, and acceptance of blatant crimes against humanity, and that the enemy is anybody who builds walls instead of friendships, who closely guards national borders to keep whole populations in check, who plays the deadly game of bombing for dollars, and who controls all the misinformation media.  The enemy has many old, respected family names, but they're all the same...all money-grubbing, power-hungry, genocidal psychopaths...Clinton, Bush, Gore, Cheney, McCain, Obama, Wolfowitz, Rumsfeld, Kagan, Kristol, Pelosi...all those and so many more...all criminally insane mass-murdering bastards who deserve to rot in prison or worse.  And maybe a few good, honest men will need to die if we're ever to break the fucking stranglehold of the enemy, and change the sick goddamned system which has the U.S. Military and so-called intelligence agencies spread into nearly every corner of this tiny blue planet, riding high on the drug trade, lubricated by oil, killing off socialist-leaning national leaders, causing mayhem, drone bombing weddings and funerals, and putting targets on the backs of every American, whether or not we've bought into their official line of bullshit lies, salute their bloody flag, and give teary-eyed thanks to the hired assassins in their military for their service.

And Edward Abbey war on target when he said:  "The tragedy of modern war is that young men die fighting each other--instead of their real enemies back home in the capitals."  Let's get serious about this, boys and girls.  Somebody come up with a plan.  I'm not getting any younger.  Hasta la victoria siempre!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Since the pig-fuckers who own, operate, and profit from Empire's deadly march do not take kindly to anyone who advocates or participates in their overthrow and demise, Johnny Lightning chooses to remain anonymous and on the lamb.  If you have a viable plan to Kill the Beast, he'll find you.  He'll fight alongside you.  He'll bleed and die with you.  He'll change the world with you.  Johnny Lightning is every one of us who wage war against the Beast of Empire.  Against imperialism.  Against capitalism.  Against greed, poverty, and wars for profit.  He seeks a world without borders, where everybody dances, or nobody dances.  He dares dream the impossible dream.

Skripal-Novichok Case: Hiding UK-U.S. Lies Gets Top Priority

BE SURE TO PASS OUR ARTICLES ON TO KIN, FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES

Putin: Guilty of everything. No evidence necessary.

The U.S. and its allies have been successful in hiding the basis on which Russian diplomats were expelled from their countries — expelled on still-undocumented accusations that Russia’s Government was behind the poisoning of Sergei and Yulia Skripal in Salisbury England on March 4th. On Wednesday April 4th, the Executive Council of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) said no to Russia’s proposal for an OPCW investigation into the source of the toxin that was used in the attack. 14 of the 41 OPCW countries endorsed an investigation; 9 abstained; 17 opposed; 1 absented.

German Radio headlined “EU stands behind Russian culpability in Skripal poisoning: The European Union has maintained that Russia is probably responsible for the Novichok nerve agent attack. This comes despite the UK’s inability to pinpoint the source of the chemical.”

The issue decided by the vote is that the expulsions of Russia’s representatives to U.S.-allied countries must stand on the basis merely of the UK Government’s allegations of Russia’s guilt, without any evidence being provided to back them up.

Essentially, what was at stake in this vote is whether the public, in each of these countries, should believe Russia’s guilt without being provided any evidence that Russia is guilty. This decision by the OPCW Executive Council is yes to that.

This means that any wars that might start or increase on account of those allegations are to be considered ‘justified’ by the residents in at least the U.S.-allied nations, because those nations’ Governments say so, and because they have the power to block an OPCW examination of whatever evidence that exists regarding this matter.

Similarly, on 20 March 2003, the U.S. and a few allies invaded and destroyed Iraq on the basis of secret ‘evidence’, which the public, in these ‘democracies’, was never permitted to see, but which ‘evidence’ now is known to have been concocted.

Many instances exist in which wars have begun on the basis of attacks that were done by the Nazis, or by the U.S., or by other fascist governments, and set up in advance so as to be falsely blamed against the Government that is to be invaded: the phrase that is commonly applied to such instances is “false-flag” events. This is what is done in order to have an ‘excuse’ for invading. Of course, the expulsion of diplomats is not an invasion, but it is commonly done in preparation for one. Usually, economic sanctions precede it; then come the expulsions; then, and perhaps months or even years later, the armed invasion.

Each citizen in these countries will therefore have to make his or her own decision as regards whether or not that person’s Government is authentically a democracy, going to wars as democracies, or actually a dictatorship, which invades foreign countries on the basis of outright lies — deception of the invading country’s own public, essentially warring against its own public and not only against the invaded country. It has happened many times before; it could happen again. But this time, the targeted country would be Russia, not Iraq or another such weak nation. The implications of this could be staggering.

For the very latest and thoroughly honest information on these developing events, information that’s as reliable as possible and that’s as devoid of speculation as possible, I recommend: https://www.craigmurray.org.uk.

Americans Trust ‘Our’ Intelligence Agencies. Should We?

BE SURE TO PASS OUR ARTICLES ON TO KIN, FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES

Lady Thatcher and Pinochet: her favorite dictator. Lovey-dovey. Never mind those ugly, pesky accusations about wholesale torture and murders under his rule. Pinochet overthrew Salvador Allende in 1973 in a CIA-orchestrated coup. Most Americans know little about this tragedy and care less. A disinformed citizenry will abide any crime, no matter how horrid.

The record is clear that ‘our’ (that is, the ruling Establishment’s) intelligence agencies, such as the CIA, have lied to the public many times, actually lie routinely — but these lies are always revealed only decades later, by historians, which is too late, because the damage was already done. Think, for example, of just two of the now-famous cases, Iran 1953, and Chile 1973, in both of which instances the US Government ended a democracy abroad, and established a brutal dictatorship there (the Shah in Iran, and Pinochet in Chile) — but what good can a historian do, when the Government and its ‘news’-media were persistently lying, and they had fooled the US public, at the time — which is all that really counted (and ever will count)? Can a historian undo the damage that the Government and its propaganda-agencies had perpetrated, by means of their lies, and coups, and invasions? Never. But this Government, and its propaganda-agents, claim to defend democracies, not to end them. Can it actually be a democracy, if it’s doing such things, and doing it time after time?

Something’s deeply wrong here. Government by deceit, cannot be a democracy. And, yet, the public still don’t get the message, even after it has been delivered to us in history-books. By then, it’s no longer in the news, and so only few people really care about it. The message of history is not learned. The public still accepts the ongoing lies — the new lies, in the new ‘news’, for the new atrocities.

The time to decide, and to act, could be short. Have we had enough now, of that lying? Because, accepting just a little bit more of it, could mean the end of everything. If it’s not going to be the end of the liars, it will probably soon be the end of everything. Because that’s the path we now are on.

During the period after the Soviet Union, and its communism, and its Warsaw Pact military alliance, all ended in 1991, the US-and-allied historical record (all now after the Cold War has supposedly been over) is even worse, and is even more clearly evil, because the ideological excuse that had formerly existed (and which was only the excuse, and not the reason, in most cases, such as in Iran, and in Chile) is gone.

Iraq in 2003 was a particularly blatant demonstration of the US-Government’s psychopathy regarding foreign affairs. So: let’s consider this example (hopefully, to learn a lesson from it — which still hasn’t yet been learnt):

Bill Clinton’s CIA chief George Tenet told President George W. Bush that convincing the American people that Saddam Hussein had WMD, weapons of mass destruction, was “a slam-dunk.” His job wasn’t to find the truth, but to authenticate the ‘evidence’ to back up the President, and Tenet did just that. The American people went for it, even though no WMD actually remained in Iraq, because the U.N. inspectors in 1998 had destroyed all of them, and because there was no indication (other than hired and coerced testimony, and especially fabrications from CIA-partnered anti-Saddam Iraqis such as Ahmed Chalabi) that there had been restored in Iraq any WMD program. A crucial date was 7 September 2002, when George W. Bush and Tony Blair both said that a new report had just been issued by the IAEA saying that Saddam Hussein was only six months away from having a nuclear weapon. The IAEA promptly denied that it had issued any such “new report” at all, and the ‘news’ media simply ignored the denial, which the IAEA then repeated weeks later, and it again was ignored; so, the false impression, that such an IAEA report had been issued, remained in the publics’ minds, and they favored invading Iraq to overthrow Saddam Hussein before there would be, as Condoleezza Rice warned the next day following Bush-Blair, on September 8th, a “mushroom cloud”. It was all just lies — lies that were believed, at the time, and even believed by many for a long time after we invaded. Some of these lies were derived from torturing detainees — torturing them to say what the US and British regimes wanted them to say.

On 25 April 2007, Tenet told CBS “60 Minutes” that

“We don't torture people. Okay?" Tenet says.

"Come on, George," Pelley says.

"We don't torture people," Tenet maintains.

"Khalid Sheikh Mohammad?" Pelley asks.

"We don't torture people," Tenet says.

"Water boarding?" Pelley asks.

"We do not – I don't talk about techniques," Tenet replies.

"It's torture," Pelley says.

"And we don't torture people.”

And here it is, see it for yourself.

As every user of this site knows we maintain an extremely low opinion of mainstream media "journalists", calling them, deservedly in our view, "presstitutes", stenographers to power. So what possessed Scott Pelley, an anchor for one of the most loyal imperialist venues, CBS, to even do this interview, let alone sound like he's pressing Tenet on his blatant lies? If even this mild probing was frequently done on corporate media, some of the truth would eventually find a healthy soil to grow, but this instance is a rare case with few reiterations anywhere.

US President Donald Trump has now appointed to lead the CIA the very same woman, Gina Haspel, who had operated, under Tenet, under Bush, the CIA “black site” in Thailand, where Abu Zubaydeh was waterboarded 83 times and otherwise tortured so that he lost his left eye. The reason why he was being tortured was in order to extract from him testimony that Saddam Hussein had been involved in 9/11, but Zubaydeh didn’t even know anything about any such matter, and tried desperately to say what he thought his torturers wanted him to say, so as to stop these tortures, but he didn’t know that they were intending to torture him until he would implicate Saddam Hussein in causing the 9/11 attacks. And so the torturing just went on and on. The CIA’s Haspel finally gave up, after deciding that he’d die if they continued any further. The problem now was to hide him from the public. So, Zubaydeh subsequently has been held incommunicado at Guantanamo since 2001, so that he can’t communicate with anyone in the outside world, and thus the crimes of George Bush and his employee George Tenet and his employee Gina Haspel, can’t be prosecuted. And, now, Trump appoints her to Tenet’s old spot, as the CIA Director. So: Bush had hired her, then protected her. Obama protected instead of prosecuted her. And, finally, Trump now promotes her, to be the CIA’s new chief. She has demonstrated herself to be a reliable liar for whomever is her boss. Trump therefore can trust her to vouch for whatever he wants her to ‘prove’, to whatever American suckers still remain, as being American suckers.

This isn’t new, but maybe it’s just worse. Think JFK assassination. Think RFK assassination. Think MLK assassination. And, even think about the CIA’s Gladio operation, which since the very start of the CIA, has been setting up atrocities designed to deceive their publics, so as to blame, first, the USSR’s Government, and then, now, Russia’s Government. (And, also, Iran’s Government, and Iraq’s Government, and Syria’s Government, and Libya’s Government, and Ukraine’s Government — any Government that’s friendly toward Russia — all for the purpose of “regime-change,” so as to pump up the sales of corporations such as Lockheed Martin and BAE, and to extend the properties of oil and gas companies like ExxonMobil. Lying to the public, in order to back up what the President wants, is what the American ‘intelligence’ community is designed to do. And, things aren’t much better in UK. (But Seymour Hersh reported that, at least one time, they were somewhat better.)

Is this type of government really in service to the public, anywhere? It is in service to the allied aristocracies — those of US & Israel & Sauds & British & etc. — who own those weapons-making firms. The military tail wags this ‘democratic’ dog.

Globally, there is a competition between aristocracies, and they are contending gangs. That’s no different than was the case leading up to WW I. But WW III will end it all — and all of us — unless the public wises up, and fast, and recognizes whom their real enemies are (which are internal, not external). Without cooperation from the news-media (owned by those aristocracies), to expose (instead of spread) the frauds, WW III — the end of everything — is in the cards. It’s in the cards, right now. And, this time, it’s not a mistake. It won’t need any wild assassin to spark the conflagration. Instead, it’s the plan. It has actually been building ever since 24 February 1990. And this has been even more confirmed now.

Should we trust ‘our’ intelligence agencies to tell us how they’re carrying out the plan? Are we idiots? Or is it just that the ‘news’ media are an arm of the CIA? In fact, "America’s Top Scientists Confirm: US Goal Now Is to Conquer Russia”, but did you read about that in the New York Times, or Washington Post, or UK’s Guardian, or at all?

Patriotism is to the public, not to the rulers. Any rulers who expect it to be to them, instead of to the public, are simply tyrants — they are traitors, who happen to rule the public. Do we live in a dictatorship, or in a democracy? If it’s a dictatorship (such as the best available evidence shows that America is), then this, which we are now experiencing, is simply par for the course. But will we continue to accept it? Or, will we, finally, learn from history? (And, if so, then will we do it fast enough, under the prevailing circumstances?) The time to decide, and to act, could be short. Have we had enough now, of that lying? Because, accepting just a little bit more of it, could mean the end of everything. If it’s not going to be the end of the liars, it will probably soon be the end of everything. Because that’s the path we now are on.
