American Media Hacking “Fake News” About North Korea

WITNESSES TO HISTORY
CALEB T. MAUPIN

US media continues its campaign against “fake news,” urging people to only listen to mainstream, pro-western capitalist news sources, despite their documented record of factual inaccuracies.

US media coverage around anything related to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) is a great example of media bias and deception in practice. Sometimes US media is caught blatantly reporting false things about the DPRK, such as the outrageous claim that Kim Jong-Un executed someone by feeding them to a pack of wild dogs. This was proven to be fake, or untrue news.

However, most of the manner in which the US public is deceived about the DPRK is more subtle.

The Forgotten “Economic Miracles”

[dropcap]F[/dropcap]or example, most Americans believe that the economic system that is in place in the northern half of the Korean peninsula has been an absolute, total failure, and caused nothing but mass starvation. This is demonstrably false.

A new video from the Council on Foreign Relations, a top American foreign policy think tank features policy analyst Scott Snyder passingly mentioning:  “It is a socialist system, it was established on the  Soviet model. The economy is centrally controlled, it worked well in the early 60s, but it ran into roadblocks.”

border.”

The Country Study of the DPRK published by the US Library of Congress goes into detail describing the economic achievements of the country, including housing, literacy, self-sufficiency and access to medical care.

MASH: The Korean war as a non-stop big frat party. A pasteurized, trivialized picture of American power that Americans can live with. This dramedy is still regarded as exceptional television even though its central concept—the inherent goodness of Americans, their wars, and their right to set up shop anywhere they please across the globe—was a huge self-serving lie.

Mass starvation took place in the DPRK during the 1990s. In the aftermath of the Soviet Union’s collapse, the DPRK was unable to import oil, on which the country’s food system was very dependent. Within the DPRK, this period is known as the “arduous march.” The government blames sanctions from the United States for the food crisis.

However, when reporting on North Korea, American media emphasizes the “arduous march” period, and omits the “economic miracles” of the 1960s. Furthermore, the causes of the food crisis of the 1990s are never explained. A single episode of mass starvation during the 1990s does not accurately represent the entire experience of socialist construction in northern Korea.

Furthermore, the audience is led to believe that the only factor is the failure of socialist economics and mis-leadership by the Korean Workers Party. Usually no other factors, such as sanctions, lack of arable land, drought, flooding, etc. are discussed.

Nukes: The Whole Story

North Korean kids on the street. Guess what folks, North Koreans are human, too. (Andre Vltchek)

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he other example of lying through omission and emphasis relates to nuclear proliferation. North Korea withdrew from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty on January 10th, 2003. It is understood now that the country possesses nuclear weapons. But why?American media ignores, omits, or de-emphasizes the entire context of the DPRK developing nuclear weapons. The audience is led to believe that the DPRK randomly developed nukes out of a desire to attack the United States or threaten its neighbors.Let’s go over the omitted background of the story of nuclear proliferation on the Korean Peninsula. During the Korean War, millions of Koreans died. Some estimate that roughly 30% of the population of the DPRK was lost. Every building above one story high was destroyed. During the war, the United States was openly considering the use of Nuclear Weapons against both Korean and Chinese forces. Douglas MacArthur even made these threats publicly.North Korea first ratified the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in 1985. In 1993, they threatened to withdraw. At the time, the country was facing an episode of mass starvation, amid US threats, sanctions, and the loss of their Soviet allies. Negotiations between the US Government and the DPRK took place, and DPRK did not withdraw. In 1994 the “Agreed Framework” was established between the United States and North Korea. It was understood that North Korea would be given agricultural aid, heating oil, and the US would move toward having diplomatic relations with North Korea, all in exchange for nuclear non-proliferation.However, the United States never fulfilled its end of the bargain. US Congress blocked the implementation of the deal which the Clinton administration had negotiated. In this context, the DPRK dropped its obligations under the agreed framework as well, and ultimately developed nuclear weapons.US media, of course, leaves out this entire chain of events. Korea’s leadership agreed not to develop nuclear weapons in exchange for food for their starving population, as well as other humanitarian support, in a time of mass starvation. US leaders did not fulfill their promises. Very little food and heating gas was ever delivered. In this context, is it a surprise, or a moral outrage that North Korea would also drop its end of the bargain, and go ahead and pursue nukes? Does such an action really fit the narrative of a “rogue state” lead by “insane” leaders bent on destroying the planet? When a few basic facts are mentioned, the entire narrative and perception of North Korea falls apart. The DPRK hasn’t always had mass starvation, and according to even rather hostile sources like BBC and the Council on Foreign Relations, its economic system was quite successful at one time. Furthermore, the DPRK developed Nuclear Weapons only in response to the failure of US leaders to fulfill their obligations under a negotiated agreement. They were promised certain things in exchange for not developing nuclear weapons. They did not get those things, so they went ahead and did it.

These facts are conveniently forgotten in any discussion of the DPRK, but they are highly relevant to understanding the country and its relationship with the world. While ignoring important aspects of reality, these news sources talk of “fake news” and urge us to listen exclusively to them? That’s probably not a good idea, especially for those who want peace. To put it mildly.

GAG A MAGGOT – PEOPLE’S MISPLACED CONCERNS FOR REFUGEES AND MUSLIM TRAVELERS

She is protesting President Trump’s travel ban on seven predominately Muslim countries. Why isn’t she organizing and protesting the Western and Israeli genocide of her Muslim brethren, across the Planet Earth, instead? The vast majority of these protestors are imperial pawns. CHINA RISING RADIO SINOLAND 170211

It is really, really hard not to get frustrated and even angry at the spectacle of millions of people demonstrating about refugees fleeing to seemingly safer, more stable pastures and now, marching against President Trump’s six-month entry ban, from seven predominately Muslim countries. Don’t get me wrong. Many of them are sincere and mean the best for social equality and justice. But scratch below the surface and it is all very emblematic of what a huge predicament humanity is in.

First, many happenings and events that transpire in the 24-hour news cycle are not spontaneous and organic, including all the ongoing pro-refugee and anti-travel-ban protests. The fact is, like false flags, they are likely commanded, controlled and financed by the governments of the citizens concerned, either directly or via proxies, NGOs, foundations, etc. And as much as we all deny it, in our heart of hearts, we know that our leaders and our “democratic” systems are corrupt and controlled by deep state manipulators, puppeteers and eminences grises, the ones who really run the show. They being Wall Street transnationals, oil bankers, generals, spies and the always obedient, purchased and sold out mainstream media pushing their slick propaganda in the oxymoronic “free press”.

We refuse to talk about it, deal with it, react to it, much less try to change it, or even more daunting, overthrow it. Why? Because the bitter truth about our myths and ideals would come shattering down, exposing everything we’ve been brought up to stand for, as hollow lies and cynical Kabuki theater. It’s much, much easier to be complacent and apathetic, living the cozy life of super-consumer sheeple. Why get out of that “civilized” cocoon, where it’s comfortably numb (to quote a great, truth-telling song by Pink Floyd https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-xTttimcNk). Inside, life is full of mostly unnecessary, material fluff and stuff, with our brains bathed in vapid TV shows and unending, eye-candy movie sequels. Real, organic contentment and intellectual fulfillment can take a hike. Hasta la vista, bay-bee. It’s a brave new world.

All those millions of refugees pouring in from the exploited global South, namely Latin America, Africa and the Middle East – are no accident. Our deep state owners are greedily using these victims of Western wars, murderous sanctions and trade policies, to drive down salaries and benefits among the native populations, and to further pummel trade unions into Potemkin paper tigers. Our owners also exploit racism and the timeless, imperial strategy of divide-and-conquer, to polarize society towards the extremes of anarchy and ultra-nationalism, in order to drown out reasoned voices, justify police state fascism and the renunciation of daily freedoms and dignities. This whole scenario is brilliantly and pithily spelled out by Mr. Jimmie Moglia, who shows that the manufactured refugee “crisis” is nothing more than a carefully scripted war on the poor, by the poor, for the enrichment of our Western owners. https://www.greanvillepost.com/2017/02/08/war-among-poor-new-world-order-shills-ambush-a-whole-generation/ Our masters play for keeps. They want it all and with capitalism as king, that means all of Mother Earth and her inhabitants. Nothing less is acceptable and nothing much has changed during 8,000 years of sedentary humankind; I’ll avoid using sedentary civilization, as a gesture of literary honesty.

Protesting Trump’s six-month ban on travelers from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen is akin to being outraged – simply outraged! –  that a serial, suppurating, AIDS-chancred rapist does not leave roses for his many victims. Why are all these protesters not screaming and marching against the West’s genocide, annihilation and attempted dismemberment (successful in Sudan) of these seven countries, their peoples and their ways of life?

We can go back to at least 1980, when the US used and goaded Iraqi President Saddam Hussein into invading Iran, as proxy punishment for the Iranians having the temerity to overthrow the West’s harlot Shah Reza Pahlavi and then humiliating empire, by occupying the American embassy in Tehran, full of hostages, for all the world to see. The United States and Western Europe then gleefully sold chemical weapons to Iraq, which are of course supposedly banned by “civilized” countries. Uncle Sam then happily provided the Iraqi army with real time satellite photos, so it could pinpoint targets in Iran, gruesomely massacring hundreds of thousands of people.

Iran, like most other countries that maintain their independence and sovereignty from Western control (China, Cuba, Eritrea, North Korea, Russia, et al., the list is long http://www.bscn.nl/sanctions-consulting/sanctions-list-countries) has been keeping its head high and its dignity intact, in spite of inhumane economic, financial and informational sanctions, which have cost its people daily suffering, shorter lifespans and death. These Western sanctions have been cruelly enforced, since the Iranians’ revolution of liberation from Western tyranny, in 1979.

Why are all these Muslim people and “civilized” Westerners across the globe not loudly protesting the genocide, annihilation and destruction of the Palestinian people, at the hands of racist, apartheid Israel? Why are they not organizing a global BDS (boycott-divestment-sanctions) to fight Israel’s genocidal crimes against humanity? https://bdsmovement.net/ Why are they not pouring into the streets by the millions, demanding Nuremberg trials against every American president since Eisenhower, as well as prosecuting their enabling Western prime ministers and presidents, such as Tony Blair and Nicolas Sarkozy, not to mention Benjamin Netanyahu? http://www.goodworksonearth.org/ramsey-clark-indictment-george-w-bush-2006-06-15.html

Why are they not storming the embassies of the West and Israel, showing outrage at the imperial extermination of millions of their brothers and sisters? How about blockading all their national versions of the White House and Congress? What about the living, those who bravely survive Western and Israeli wars and colonialism? Shouldn’t they rather be taking concrete action for these tens of millions of Western and Israeli victims, who are existing in homelessness, hunger, sickness and misery (Iran’s independence helps mitigate many of the crises)?

For the uncounted, ignored-in-the-West millions of dead Iranians, Iraqis, Libyans, Somalians, Sudanese, Syrians Yemenis – and Palestinians, along with their wounded, handicapped and destitute brethren, do they really give a rat’s ass about green cards, H1-B visas, or counting their frequent flyer miles?

With all due respect, the vast majority of these protesters are brainwashed, misguided, imperial pawns. It’s enough to gag a maggot.

Balance? Objectivity? Those are phony code words used by the corporate media to pretend impartiality and comprehensiveness in their reports. In reality, truth doesn’t have two sides or many sides. It is what it is. And we’re not afraid to seek it and tell it, with apologies to no one.

Is Rachel Maddow Becoming a Liberal Glenn Beck?

horiz grey line

tgplogo12313

by NORMAN SOLOMON

When Rachel Maddow finished a 26-minute monologue that spanned two segments on her MSNBC program last Thursday night, her grave tones indicated that she thought she’d just delivered a whale of a story. But actually it was more like a minnow — and a specious one at that.

Convoluted and labored, Maddow’s narrative tried to make major hay out of a report from Moscow that a high-ranking Russian intelligence official had been dragged out of a meeting, arrested and charged with treason. Weirdly, Maddow kept presenting that barebones story as verification that Russia’s President Vladimir Putin had directly ordered the hacking and release of Democratic campaign emails in order to get Donald Trump elected president.

It was a free-associating performance worthy of Glenn Beck at a whiteboard. Maddow swirled together an array of facts, possible facts, dubious assertions and pure speculation to arrive at conclusions that were based on little more than her zeal to portray Trump as a tool of the Kremlin. Even when sober, Joe McCarthy never did it better.

We might dismiss her performance as just another bit of stagecraft on “MSDNC,” but Maddow was in sync with widespread fear-mongering by pundits and Democratic Party loyalists who think they’re picking some low-hanging fruit to throw at Trump. But what they’re doing is poisonous — and extremely dangerous.

The standard memes demanding hostility toward Putin virtually never address some crucial questions. Such as: What are the plausible results of escalating a new Cold War? Is it wise to push the U.S. government into evermore assertive brinkmanship with Russia? Wouldn’t the degree of success in that endeavor increase the degree of danger that the antagonisms will spiral into a military confrontation and, from there, into a nuclear holocaust?

Such questions don’t seem to bother the likes of Maddow, who has largely built her TV career on mocking, impugning and denouncing Republicans. Fair enough, except when it isn’t — and when it latches onto a Democratic party line of attack: no matter how bogus the reasoning or how dire the potential consequences for humans and all other life on this planet.

Sliding through a kind of time warp, Maddow’s performance on the night of January 26 * was akin to what the most extreme Republicans have reveled in doing to incumbent Democrats in past decades — baiting them as accomplices of the Kremlin and warning against actual détente between the two countries.

MaddowTiradeAgainstPutin from patrice greanville on Vimeo.

To be clear: Donald Trump has already shown himself to be a horrendous president in countless ways that matter, from his Cabinet appointments to his numerous corrosive statements to his executive orders on subjects ranging from family planning for women overseas to immigration at home. Why spin into agenda-driven conjecture and illogic when there are so many empirical reasons to directly challenge Trump?

But for countless U.S. reporters and pundits as well as Democrats in Congress, the temptation to attack Trump as a servant of Putin is irresistible.

  • THIS PARTICULAR EPISODE HAS BEEN DELETED BY MADDOW FROM YOUTUBE, APPARENTLY IN AN ATTEMPT TO STEM CRITICISM OR ERASE THE EVIDENCE OF AN EMBARRASSING PIECE OF DISINFORMATION. HOWEVER, THE PROGRAM, WHICH TAKES SOME PATIENCE TO WATCH, NOT TO MENTION A HIGH TOLERANCE FOR HYPOCRISY, IS STILL AVAILABLE ON MSNBC. A COPY OF IT IS POSTED ABOVE.

Bashing Trump’s Justifiable Outrage Over Disgraceful Press Coverage

black-horizontalDispatches from
STEPHEN LENDMAN

stevenlendmanbanner
C     olumbia J School is a factory to turn out cookie cutter, unthinking cogs for the capitalist media machine, more concerned with jobs and careers than with the real-world principles and duties of journalists confronting entrenched power. —The Editor

MAIN IMAGE ABOVE: Kyle Pope, Editor & Publisher, Columbia Journalism Review.

by Stephen Lendman

With few exceptions, media scoundrels relentlessly bashed him throughout the political season. Vilification continues daily post-election, inventing reasons to denigrate him, an unprecedented example of political presstitution at its worst. An open letter to him from the US press corp, written by Columbia Journalism Review editor-in-chief and publisher Kyle Pope, warrants a reader response. Trump and his team can speak for themselves.
Pope: “You’ve banned news organizations from covering you.”
Fact: False! He leveled sharp criticism as justified, including blasting CNN as fake news. He should have applied that label to the entire scoundrel media establishment, suppressing hard truths, substituting managed news misinformation and Big Lies – about him and on virtually all other important issues. Any news organization and their members are free to cover him. He’s free to ignore any ones he wishes.
 …
Pope: “(Y)our press secretary is considering pulling news media offices out of the White House…”
 ..
Fact: False! Incoming press secretary Sean Spicer said space is being sought to accommodate a larger number of journalists – not change the workspace for White House reporters. At the same time, Trump is entitled to challenge members of the press spreading malicious lies about him. No one should put up with abusive practices.
 …
Pope: “You’ve taken to Twitter to taunt and threaten individual reporters and encouraged your supporters to do the same.”
 …
Fact: Western media scoundrels are a national disgrace. Trump should respond when they blast him irresponsibly.  Twitter is his favorite way of communicating. He’s able to reach millions, free from misquotes and distortions. Earlier I called him America’s tweeter-in-chief, encouraging him to keep tweeting.
..
Pope: “You’ve avoided the press when you could and flouted the norms of pool reporting and regular press conferences.”
 …
Fact: Advice referees give prize fighters to protect themselves at all times especially applies to presidents and other heads of state. If he wishes, Trump is entitled to avoid press corps members denigrating him maliciously.
He’s yet to assume office, so it’s unknown how often he’ll hold press conferences. Franklin Roosevelt, serving nearly four terms, held far more than any other president. They were more informal affairs in pre-television days than how they’re held today.
 ..
Pope: “You’ve ridiculed a reporter who wrote something you didn’t like because he has a disability.”
 …
Fact: Trump debunked the accusation as a malicious lie.
 …
Pope: Press “access is preferable, but not critical.” Lacking it is “a challenge we relish.”
 …
Fact: Trump has no problem with responsible reporting. Denigrating him without just cause is another matter entirely.
 …
Pope: “Ground rules are the prerogative of the press.”

Fact: That type attitude would antagonize anyone.
 …
Pope: “We decide how much airtime to give your spokespeople and surrogates.”
 …
Fact: How much time isn’t the issue. Responsible truth-telling matters most – what’s sorely lacking in mainstream Western reporting, turning journalism into presstitution.
 ..
Pope: “Facts are what we do…”
 …
Fact: Media scoundrels suppress them, substituting fake news. (Pope is clearly as bad as the presstitutes he sanctimoniously defends or delusional.—Editor)
 ..
Pope: “(W)hile you may seek to control what comes out of the West Wing, we’ll have the upper hand in covering how your policies are carried out.”
 …
Fact: If reporting on Trump follows the pattern seen throughout the political season and post-election so far, expect endless rubbish substituting for responsible journalism.
 ..
Pope: We’ll set higher standards for ourselves than ever before.”
 …
Fact: Presstitutes make street whores look good by example. Case closed!

New Bernie Sanders Interview on “Face the Nation” with John Dickerson 11/13/16 CBS

PATRICE GREANVILLE
horiz grey line

tgplogo12313

It’s unfortunate that Sanders is only NOW, when the die is cast, talking so lucidly about this damn election. Everything he says is definitely and demonstrably way better than anything that the official duopoly offered the long-suffering American population. Too bad he sold out and delivered his flock to the arch-criminal Hillary. By doing so he not only squandered a precious opportunity to break the duopoly, but to defeat it in both its reactionary (GOP), and supposedly progressive wings (Democrat), the latter claim of course also a total falsehood. Now we are facing a period of indefinite pain and tumult that might not have happened at all under a Sanders/Stein administration.
