CANTAROW / LOEWENSTEIN—The Antisemitism Awareness Act, which indeed weaponizes antisemitism against those protesting Israel’s savagery in Gaza and the cruelty of its overall occupation policies, is soon to be voted upon by the Senate. Its enactment would mark a giant step towards degrading the U.S. Constitution, in particular its protection of freedom of speech, assembly, and a free press. It also threatens the status of academia as a realm in which the free exchange of ideas can flourish.

ARI PAUL—What is clear is that the student protesters across the country have organized a structure where many participants who are approached by media defer to appointed media liaisons (Daily Bruin, 4/27/24; KSBW, 5/3/24; Daily Freeman, 5/4/24; WCOS, 5/4/24).
For Baker and Noonan, this is evidence that the protests are at best not serious, and at worst not democratic. Indeed, corporate media, at every turn, have attempted to sully calls to halt a genocide as some kind of perverted anti-democratic extremism (Atlantic, 4/22/24; New York Times, 4/23/24, 5/2/24; Washington Post, 5/6/24, 5/6/24; Free Press, 5/6/24).

JOE LAURIA—Graphika seemed alarmed that on PeaceData’s Arabic-language site “some articles also attacked France in general and President Emmanuel Macron in particular, and accused them of an ‘imperialist’ approach toward Africa.” This is in line with the Times quoting Ben Nimmo, director of investigations at Graphika and an Atlantic Council fellow, as saying, “In terms of posting, they were clearly significantly left of the Biden-Harris campaign,” as if this were a threat to “national security” as the FBI contends. PeaceData had a mix of original and republished articles, Graphika tells us, from publications such as The Grayzone, which Graphika smears as a “pro-Kremlin site.”

SCOTT RITTER—A centerpiece of Scott’s impassioned denunciation of Zionist perfidy is the murder of Hind Rajab, a 6-year-old. “Layan,” Mohammed Salem Hamada, the relative in Germany who placed the call later recounted, “told me that her father and my aunt—her mother is my aunt—were shot and they are all dead. She said the IDF [Israel Defense Forces] soldiers were shooting them and she also told me that the tanks are getting closer to them. Layan explained that she had been shot in the leg, as had 6-year-old Hind. Layan told Mohammed that “she didn’t know how bad the injury or injuries were because she was covered—all of them were covered—in blood.” Layan then handed the phone to Hind, who told Mohammed “Please help me. Please come and rescue us. Rescue me.” Mohammed broke down. “I was literally crying because I was unable to do anything, and I think all of my family were in the same situation.”
His wife took the phone away from the sobbing man. “Sweetheart,” she told Hind, “don’t be scared, God loves you and he will take care of you.”
