If Progressives Don’t Wake Up to How Awful Obama Was, Their Movement Will Fail

Could you ask for a more perfect bookend to Obama’s blood-soaked neocon abortion of a presidency than his receiving $400,000 to give a speech at a health care conference organized by a Wall Street firm?

My God I hate every single thing about every single part of this. Let me type that out again in segments, so we can all really feel into it:

Four hundred thousand dollars. For a former President of the United States. To give a speech. At a healthcare conference. Organized by a Wall Street firm.

Why are Wall Street firms organizing motherfucking healthcare conferences, one might understandably ask? And why are they hiring the man who just completed an eight-year war on progressive healthcare policy and a torrid love affair with Wall Street criminals? These are extremely reasonable questions that might be asked by anyone who is intelligent and emotionally masochistic enough to look straight at this thing, and the answer, of course, is America. That’s what America is now. The man who continued and expanded all of Bush’s most evil policies, created a failed state in Libya, exponentially expanded the civilian-slaughtering US drone program which Chomsky calls “the most extreme terrorist campaign of modern times” to unprecedented levels, facilitated the Orwellian expansion of the US surveillance state while prosecuting more whistleblowers than all previous administrations combined, and used charm and public sympathy to evade the drastic environmental policy changes we’ll need to avert climate disaster and lull the progressive movement into a dead sleep for eight years now gets paid nearly half a million dollars an hour to continue bolstering the exploitative corporatist nightmare he’s dedicated his life to. American University has compiled data indicating that the already extremely wealthy Obama family may end up being worth as much as $242 million in their post-White House years, and if Barry keeps whoring himself out like this, he might exceed even that.

[dropcap]A[/dropcap]nyone who’s familiar with my work knows that I harbor markedly less affection for Hillary Clinton than I do for malaria-infected mosquitoes, but I still find it annoying how clued-in people on the anti-establishment left are to how horrible she is while still maintaining a degree of sympathy for Obama. There’s a general awareness that Obama was far from perfect and did immoral things, but you rarely see the same vitriol and disdain for him as you do for Clinton on the left, which is absurd because they are the same monster. This needs to change before there can be any forward movement on the progressive front. Unless we get crystal clear that these Democratic neocons are unacceptable, they’re going to keep finding political influence among our ranks.
.
I began this essay by saying that Obama’s $400,000 oligarchic shill job was a bookend. I did that because, in what was easily the single most important and egregious WikiLeaks email of 2016, we learned that Wall Street was calling the shots in the Obama administration before the Obama administration even existed. Before he was even elected, an executive from Citigroup (the corporate owner of Citibank) gave Obama a list of acceptable choices for who may serve on his cabinet. The list ended up matching Obama’s actual cabinet picks once elected almost to a ‘t’.

Feel like doing a little citizen journalism? Here is a link to the aforementioned WikiLeaks document. Go to Attachments and select “Cabinet Example” to see the cabinet members offered to Obama, and compare the names there to this Wikipedia list of actual cabinet appointments and note the tremendous amount of overlap for his 2009 appointments.

Feel like doing a little more citizen journalism? Try and find any mainstream coverage of this email after it came out. Write about your findings somewhere on the internet, and boom, a guerrilla investigative journalist is born.

I can understand why pro-establishment liberals are defending this man; he stands for everything they stand for. If all you stand for is vapid tribalism and vanity politics and you are willing to sacrifice integrity along with economic and social justice and the lives of other people’s kids in corporatist wars overseas in order to feel like you’re on the right team, Obama is your man. But if you’re an actual, real progressive and not just a latte-sipping NPR listener with a sense of self-righteousness and a pro-choice bumper sticker, you’ve got no business regarding Obama with anything but disgust.

The email was ignored by everyone but the fringe of the fringe, with the most significant coverage coming from Russia Today and right here in the Observer, whose ties to Trump via then-publisher Jared Kushner have been well-documented.  The anti-establishment right didn’t care about it because they were focused on beating Clinton, and the anti-establishment left didn’t care because… why? It should of course have been a front-page scandal for weeks, but at the very least progressives should have lifted up a big fat “NO” to it. This was the cabinet that determined the administration’s response to the criminals who caused the 2008 financial crisis that had just ravaged the nation, and they were treated with a light finger wag and a kiss goodnight by these Citibank appointees, who then went on to help assemble the exploitative and climate-killing TPP.

I mean, it’s wrong, but I also get it. The sympathy we’re tempted to feel for that child-killing corporate crony is one of the very few problems that we actually can blame mostly on Republicans. They spent eight years hammering the guy, but they couldn’t criticize any of his actual evil policies because they were all policies that Republicans support too, from warmongering to bolstering the Walmart economy. So they had to make up the most ridiculous bullshit we’d ever heard, which you couldn’t just stand around listening to without screaming and disputing. They couldn’t attack his Orwellian surveillance programs, so they said he’s a Muslim. They couldn’t attack his eat-the-poor neoliberalism, so they said he’s a Kenyan. They couldn’t attack the unforgivable bloodbaths he was inflicting on other countries, so they said he’s a socialist (Ha! Remember that one?). So by attacking these moronic right-wing narratives, we often wound up tacitly taking his side, which fostered sympathy.

That sympathy is what needs to go. Anyone who’s ever escaped from an abusive relationship knows that sympathy is the very first thing that you need to get rid of in order to be free, because sympathy is how a manipulator sucks you in. When you’re dealing with a government that in 2013 gave itself the legal right to use media psy-ops on its own citizens, you can’t afford to have any stray strands of sympathy laying around out there. The war we’re fighting against the oligarchy is first and foremost a media war, and we may be certain that any sympathies progressives maintain toward their establishment oppressors will be exploited. By letting ourselves really see Obama for the vicious ecocidal warmongering corporatist that he is and letting the resulting disgust wash through us, we are inoculating ourselves against sympathy for him and everyone like him. That disgust will serve as a kind of psychological gag reflex that rescues us from swallowing any more of their bullshit.

Obama is not the poor widdle victim here, the American public is. Remember that not even a year after the taxpayer took the brunt of the damage from the banks’ idiotic gamble on subprime loans, he was out there inspiring rallies of people with his talk of hope and change, but at the exact same time as he was promising the American people that he would take Wall Street to task, in private he was allowing Citigroup to handpick his cabinet.

Obama will go down in history books as one of the most abject of traitors to his own race, not to mention the American population at large, and that's not counting the hideous damage he inflicted on the planet itself.

Just let that sink in for a minute. He was out there galvanizing and re-energizing the whole progressive movement, commanding giant rallies of people with his inspiring words and heartfelt promises, but at the very same time, he was emailing Wall Street to get their list for his cabinet appointments. Remember, this email wasn’t after he’d won. He’d engaged in this transaction while he was still campaigning, still sucking up every bit of hope America had for reversing the ravages of neoliberalism. He. Was. Lying.

That does not deserve sympathy. He knew what he was doing and he wasn’t forced into it by any “obstructionist congress”. The stage was already set. One could easily make the case that he not only killed off hope for change, but that he meant to — that the whole thing was deliberate from the start and that he meant to magnetize any hope left in the bruised and abused population, and suck it into the vortex forever, leaving everyone despondent and without hope. But one thing’s for sure: he certainly never intended to give America the changes he was promising. Ever. The Citigroup email proves that beyond a doubt.

And now he’s out there raking in the cash. So I do not weep for Obama, and neither should you.

A friend of mine who has a background in Alcoholics Anonymous once shared with me her view that the majority of 12-steppers are actually pre-Step 1 — that most of them really haven’t really grokked into how powerless they are over their addiction in any meaningful way. Well I see rejecting Obama as Step 1 of fighting the progressive revolution, and I think it might be possible that a majority of progressives haven’t fully done that yet. Some of my readers will have already worked their way down this rabbit hole and processed what needs to be processed while many others will find it a bit confronting, but I think everyone can benefit from a little more Obama hate. We must never go back there. We must unequivocally reject anyone who would take us back there.

We don’t get to keep him. We don’t get to keep the first black president. We don’t get to let that be ours; we have to reject it, in the same way we’d have to reject the first female president had Hillary won. Any pride in him, any benefit of the doubt because of his place in history, is an obstacle to judging his true behavior for what it is, as it is. I do sincerely hope there can one day be presidents who transcend racial barriers and shatter glass ceilings and also do their best to advance a pro-human agenda, but Barack Obama was no such president. He’s not ours. Kick him out.

Caitlin Johnstone: How To Fight The Establishment Propaganda Machine And Win

am going to keep hammering and hammering on this point until I see that it has taken root in American consciousness: the single best way to take down the oligarchy is by aggressively and relentlessly attacking its propaganda engine. People appreciate my cutesy little analysis pieces on current events and my rude nicknames for corporate Democrats, but if there was one idea I could implore you all to ingest and circulate, this would be it.

It is clearer now than ever before that democracy is functionally nonexistent in America. In an unapologetically strict two-party system, the DNC is openly communicating to the public that it considers itself a private establishment under no obligation to provide the public with a legitimate Democratic primary. On the other side of the aisle the purported nationalist who the people supposedly elected has been acting more and more like the neocon globalists that his grassroots supporters despise. No matter how you vote, the plutocrats and their multinational corporations and banks win, and the American people lose. This is settled beyond dispute for anyone who’s been paying attention. We tried all the political doors, and they’re all bolted shut.

So that’s it, right? Checkmate? Time to give up, tap out and wait until they get us all killed in a nuclear holocaust or climate disaster?

Wrong. The elites who manipulate your government are more vulnerable now than ever before and they know it — the solution just isn’t in politics, it’s in media. What Americans lack in voting power, they make up for in the fact that their ability to network and share information has reached completely unprecedented heights, which means that the old propaganda systems which have been used to lull Americans into accepting the establishment narrative are wielding less and less influence. The internet has the potential to initiate a total shift in public perspective.

Some people get upset at me for not picking a side on the DemEnter vs. DemExit debate within the greater progressive revolution; DemExiters especially keep showing up whenever I mention Bernie Sanders or Tulsi Gabbard for example, yelling “Don’t you fools get it? The system is rigged! Vote third party!” Uhh, can we talk about the inherently self-contradictory nature of that line of thinking for a second? If you know that the system is rigged against you by your oppressors, then why are you fighting them within the system that they rigged? That’s like agreeing to fight a shark in the water, or a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt on the ground. They’ve got the electoral system all shored up in their favor, and as long as their propaganda engine is functioning, they’ll continue manipulating the way mainstream America thinks and votes no matter what political insurgencies you try to pull off. If by some miracle you do get an even remotely anti-establishment candidate over their wall of manipulations, then they’ll find ways to pressure them into falling into line just like they’ve been doing to Trump with their Russiagate nonsense.

UNDER MARKET RULES, BIG MEDIA CELEBRITIES like Joe Scarborough and his show partner, Mika Brzezinski, quickly become valuable commodities requiring (and receiving) constant promotion. The images below testify to this unquestioned practice. In that manner, the system completely assures its profits and “owns” the celebrities who, surrounded by privilege, fame and exorbitant monetary rewards, see no incentive to question the status quo, nor their position in the whole rotten scheme.

MEDIA INCEST: Morning Joe’s hosts being interviewed (promoted) at one of America’s many late-night talk shows. Besides constantly giving themselves awards for this or for that, media celebs are always promoting others in the same prostituted profession. It’s a self-congratulatory choir with a win-win payoff, except for the bamboozled public.

Promo shots for Joe and Mika—Hollywood treatment and packaging. It’s an insidious system blurring entertainment with “information”—the new bastard coin of the empire, infotainment.

[dropcap]S[/dropcap]o what can we do? We make them fight our fight. If they’re a shark and we’re a tiger, we make them fight us in the jungle. If they’re a Brazilian jiu-jitsu blackbelt and we’re a kickboxer, we make them fight us standing up. Since they’re an old power structure in a rapidly-shifting media landscape that completely lost control of the narrative in 2016 and we are denizens of the internet, we make them fight a media war. The oppression machine cannot operate without its propaganda engine, and we have right now at our fingertips the ability to cripple that engine. Once it’s crippled, they are powerless, and the old mechanisms of manipulation and control will be shrugged off like a heavy coat on a warm day. Here is a simple, winnable eight-point strategy for doing exactly that:

1. Increase public distrust of the mainstream media.

Did you know that in 2009 MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough turned down an easy run for the US Senate because he decided that he could have more influence on public policy as the host of Morning Joe than as one of 100 US senators? Indeed, in 2011 Time named him one of the most influential people on the planet. You live in a country where a TV show host wields more political power than some of its most high-level elected officials, and knows it. His ability to manipulate public opinion and votes in the most powerful nation in the world gives him more power than any mere senator could ever dream of.

Now imagine if nobody trusted Joe Scarborough. Imagine if nobody trusted any of the other talking heads on TV. Imagine if they knew that CNN has been trotting out a seven year-old Syrian girl with an extremely popular fake Twitter account and making her recite scripted lines in order to manufacture consent for another regime change invasion in another strategically crucial location in the fossil fuel battle, for example. The Bana Alabed psy-op is the single most transparent piece of war propaganda that I have ever seen in my life, and we should be talking about it constantly, because they really left themselves exposed with that one. We should all be screaming about that and pointing at all the incriminating evidence all the time, because it is perfect and irrefutable proof that the corporate media is conspiring to drum up public support for a regime change that America’s permanent government has been salivating over for ages. Here is an article I wroteabout this psy-op, and here is an excellent video by the Resistance Chicks breaking down the specifics of what a brazen lie CNN is knowingly participating in:

[dropcap]M[/dropcap]aking a lot of noise about these extremely suspicious behaviors will cause people to view the media they consume with a healthy amount of suspicion, during which time they won’t be ingesting the sleeping pills that these deep state mouthpieces are feeding them, because you only imbue narratives with the power of belief when they’re coming from someone you trust. We need to kill that trust, and we kill it by constantly being on the attack against every sick, weird thing these creeps do.

In order to wrest power from the oligarchs and give it to the American people, mainstream America is going to have to start waking up to the fact that their government is lying to them with the help of the corporate media, and that they do not live in the kind of country that their teachers taught them they live in. This is not an insurmountable goal. Gallup reports that trust in the mass media is already at an all-time low for mainstream America, and that’s only going to get worse as we keep attacking it.

2. Shatter the illusion of normalcy.

This is the ultimate objective behind every single maneuver in the media war against America’s unelected power establishment. In 2013, the United States government formally gave itself the right to use psy-ops(psychological operations, i.e. large-scale manipulations of the way the public sees and thinks about something) on its own citizens. In an influential 1983 paper titled “Military Psychological Operations and US Strategy,” Col. Alfred R. Paddock Jr. wrote that “psychological operations is the one weapons system which has an important role to play in peacetime.” According to an article titled “How US Flooded the World with Psyops” by investigative journalist Robert Parry of Consortium News, “Until the 1980s, psyops were normally regarded as a military technique for undermining the will of an enemy force by spreading lies, confusion and terror… Essentially, the psyops idea was to play on the cultural weaknesses of a target population so they could be more easily manipulated and controlled. But the challenges facing the Reagan administration in the 1980s led to its determination that peacetime psyops were also needed and that the target populations had to include the American public.”

So we know they’re using media psy-ops on the American public, and we know psy-ops need to be done constantly, during both peacetime and wartime, on the election season and off, in order to be effective. America is a corporatist system of government, its mass media is owned by a mere five corporations, and the CIA has been deeply embedded within the mass media for decades. The US government and its plutocrat owners did not make it legal to use psy-ops on American citizens for shits and giggles, they did it because they use psy-ops on American citizens. This is really happening. This is not paranoia. These are facts.

Since these psy-ops are running constantly, people get used to them. It slips right in when a manipulative wordsmith like Chris Cuomo mumbles a word salad about it being illegal to read WikiLeaks. They’re used to having their perspectives constantly nudged and adjusted every day by the rapey manipulations of these mental predators.

These predators use their trusted, ubiquitous presence in the lives of the public to convince them that everything else that’s happening is normal, too. It’s perfectly normal for a few extremely wealthy people and their cronies to take all new income for themselves and control your government while you struggle to feed your family. It’s normal for your country to be bombing sovereign nations every single day and have hundreds of military bases all over the world. It’s normal for Americans to pay more in healthcare-related taxes than anyone else on earth but still be the only major country without healthcare as a right. It’s normal that all these politicians seem to do pretty much the same things once elected despite campaigning on very different platforms. It’s normal for elected officials to lie. It’s normal for your government to have the ability to spy on you. This is all normal.

We need to snap mainstream America out of this lullaby of normalcy. We need to be the caring friend who tells them that it’s not normal for their boyfriend to be violent and controlling. We need to keep coming up with new and innovative ways to let everyone know that none of this is normal and it needs to stop. That is always our ultimate goal, because without the spell of normalcy, the whole thing falls apart.

3. Shatter the illusion of unanimity.

Everyone knows that the Russians hacked the election; there’s no serious debate about that. Assad gassed his own people in Idlib; all the experts agree. Kim Jong Un is an irrational madman who could deploy a nuke at any moment unless we keep pressuring him; that’s just a fact. Since all mass media is owned by the same few people, the oligarchs can create the illusion of consensus whenever they need to advance an important agenda. The same singular narrative gets picked up and spouted from all outlets in an extremely confident-sounding and authoritative tone, as we saw them do with the “Saddam has WMDs and wants to inflict another 9/11 on America” psy-op we saw with Iraq. This creates the illusion that a completely unsubstantiated claim is an established fact, and at that point anyone suggesting otherwise will be scoffed at and dismissed at best or condemned and demonized at worst.

We fight this by being even more confident and authoritative in our dismissal of these narratives, and by distributing counter-narratives as widely as possible with as many other people as we can get on board. Refuse to be shamed into silence. When people are wrong, tell them so. Don’t just retreat into your echo chamber, speak! Say it like you mean it and say it like you’re right, because you do, and you are.

4. Stay loudly politically active.

I know I just got done saying that there are no political solutions in a nation with no democracy, but that’s precisely the point. The establishment would like nothing better than for us all to give up on politics and slip away into obscurity so we’ll stop making noise and waking up their sleeping victims. I recently had an interaction with a man on my page who claimed to have been a Democratic delegate in multiple presidential elections who said he’d rather lose every election from here to eternity than ever collaborate with the Sanders wing, and that he wants anti-establishment progressives to all slink away from the mainstream political debate into some fringe where we can be comfortably ignored. The more transparent Clintonians like the perpetually cringe-inducing Sally Albright say the same thing, that it would be better if Berniecrats went away unless they abandon their economic justice platform (which the oligarchs can’t stand) to focus exclusively on social justice (which the oligarchs are indifferent to).

That’s what they want, so don’t give it to them. If you’re for DemEnter, loudly push your progressive candidates forward and then make as much noise as possible when the establishment media smears them and the DNC sabotages their campaigns. Same exact thing if you’re pro-DemExit; push your independent and third party candidates into the spotlight with as much noise and fanfare as possible, then scream and point when they are sabotaged by the establishment. If you’re a libertarian, a nationalist and/or paleocon, same thing, and do it with the increasing number of neocon policy switcheroos Trump has been making, too. Mainstream America is still not yet aware that democracy is not happening in America, so the more facts we can amass to show them the better, and the more noise we make about it the more of them we’ll wake up.

5. Hold a grudge.

I’ve been using the phrase “news churn” a lot lately, because it’s so illustrative of the way the mass media works. No matter what weird, creepy things the establishment inflicts upon the American people, the 24/7 babbling, churning news cycle quickly shuffles it out of memory. We must never let that happen. We need to be a solid object against the churning tide of forgetfulness, never forgetting that the DNC actively sabotaged the only progressive in its primary, never forgetting that the deep state completely unmasked itself and its agenda with the Bana Alabed psy-op, never forgetting that they tried to force into the White House a candidate who was promising to set up a no-fly zone in an area where Russian military planes were conducting operations, never forgetting the horrors they inflicted upon Libya, never forgetting that they lied to us about Iraq.

Keep bringing that stuff up. Keep pointing and yelling about it. It’s not fixed, it’s still broken, they’re still doing it, and they’re trying to do more. Never forget, never forgive, because that’s exactly what the shadow government wants. Keep disrupting that.

6. Always be attacking.

[dropcap]M[/dropcap]arcelo Garcia, arguably the greatest grappler to have ever lived, teaches his students that they should always be on the attack, that any time their opponent has forced them to play defense, they’re losing the fight. This is an important mindset for the media war, too. We can’t be reactive, waiting for them to tell a lie and then rushing out to defend against it, because then they’re on the front foot and they’re already sweeping the public up in their narrative while we scramble to catch up. We’ve got many years’ worth of establishment lies to point at and scream about, and since we’re so good at holding a grudge we can keep digging them up and pointing at them. Keep attacking the DNC scandal. Keep attacking CNN on the Bana Alabed psy-op. Keep attacking the New York Times for its special role in selling America the lies that led to the Iraq invasion and the Washington Post for constantly reporting on the intelligence community without ever disclosing the fact that its owner has received hundreds of millions of dollars from the CIA.

Always be attacking; put them on the defense. Keep advancing causes that make them uncomfortable and ideas they have to defend against. Force them into situations where they need to do things like come up with ridiculous explanationsfor why Assad would gas his own people at the worst possible time when he stood nothing to gain from it and everything to lose. Make them look stupid. The more stupid they look, the more openings they’ll create for further attacks, and the less belief mainstream America will invest in their narratives. Don’t wait on them; attack now. Attack now and show no mercy. Keep shoving that sword through until it comes out the other end.

7. Find the others.

If you’re reading this, chances are you’ve made some connections with other people who’ve punched through the matrix and seen through the wall of lies they’ve been offered since birth. This is good; when everyone who’s been drinking the kool-aid is telling you you’re insane, it’s important to be insulated by a group who’ll tell you “Nah, you’re not crazy — I see it too.” Everything in our evolutionary primate heritage tells us our survival depends upon our ability to fit in with the rest of the tribe, so the pressure to just dissociate from our misgivings in order to conform can be soul-crushing. If you don’t have a support system like this yet I strongly recommend finding one, because it’s so hard to keep your head above water without it.

But how many of these others have you found who see what you’re seeing but don’t share your ideological background? This is the next step. In order to kill the propaganda machine, we’re going to have to start collaborating with everyone who wants to see it dead. The anti-establishment lefties don’t have the numbers to do this on their own, nor do the anarchists, nor do any of the factions on the anti-establishment right, and you may be certain that as soon as we get the propaganda beast up against the ropes it will immediately start doubling down on its tried-and-true tactic of divide and conquer. It will do everything it can to try and wedge us apart and turn us against each other, so we’ll stop fighting the real enemy.

This is kind of an advanced move, but the more comfortable we can get with fighting the mass media’s narratives side-by-side with all the other ideological factions which oppose it — the commies, the Berners, the Greens, the anarchists, the libertarians, the civic and economic nationalists, the truth-tellers of all shapes and sizes— the more effective we’ll be. Anti-establishment media will be able to go a lot more viral, we won’t get distracted fighting each other, we won’t be creating in isolation, we’ll all be plugged in to a much larger hive mind picking out weaknesses in the enemy and coming up with creative new attacks on the establishment narrative. If we can get the anti-establishment movement’s numbers big enough, it will breach into the mainstream over and over and over again, punching holes in the official narrative every time.

This is totally doable.

8. Have fun.

Lastly, have fun with this. This revolution is actually fun! We have the opportunity to be basically wizards, fighting the word-spells these bastards are casting on the sleeping mainstream and screaming “You shall not pass!” And we get to bring our creativity and passion to it, make memes, write blogs, make videos, share ideas, and have it actually mean something and be building toward something real and tangible. This is a revolution where you won’t wind up on the wrong end of some redcoat’s bayonet, but instead get to do fun stuff you already enjoy!

I say this because looking straight at the evil of these fuckers can be deeply draining if you get sucked up into negative thought patterns, and we could lose a good media soldier when you could just be having fun and playing with us instead. I see so very much to be optimistic about here, and this war is so very, very winnable if we just bring our creativity and enthusiasm to it.

Don’t let anyone tell you that this cannot be done. I don’t respect pessimism here anymore; there’s no valid reason to be pessimistic in a completely unprecedented situation. There are currently more than 3.7 billion active internet users on planet Earth right now, and counting. 3.7 billion human brains able to network and share the very best ideas and information that humanity has ever produced with each other with greater and greater efficacy. 3.7 billion human brains collaborating and conspiring together. Nothing even remotely like this has ever happened before in human history. You don’t get to be pessimistic in a situation like this. Anything could happen. We can definitely do this. Have fun.

Check out my follow-up to this piece, “Media War Toolkit — The Seven Deadliest Weapons Against Establishment Propaganda”, where I talk about some specific attacks that we can launch using this strategy.

Hope is Our Enemy: Fighting Boiling Frog Syndrome

GREGORY BARRETThoriz grey line

HELP ENLIGHTEN YOUR FELLOWS. BE SURE TO PASS THIS ON. SURVIVAL DEPENDS ON IT.

I caught myself feeling optimistic the other day. I had just read another great internet column by Caitlin Johnstone, who has deservedly gathered a huge following in recent months with her series on the utter batshit insanity of Rachel Maddow and other Hillaroids who are following MSNBC down the New McCarthy Highway of Demon-Putinism. In this particular piece, the always entertaining Ms J was pushing some serious positive news which we all desperately need: alternative media is making substantial progress against the official narrative from the presstitute Mainstream Corporate Media World of Propaganda – and not only corporate, because here in the European Union the public media are right there on board with the Evil Russia Narrative, condemning all who question EU-NATO Neoliberalism as “populists” who represent a terrible threat to Democracy with a capital D. In Germany, in particular, there is a great deal of confusion about the meaning of the D-word, which is very loosely thrown about here as a perceived synonym for the Rule of Law.

To this day many people think that Obama was an enlightened ecowarrior who fought hard to defend the environment instead of yet another well-packaged corporate shill, but except for token measures, his administration did practically nothing. In the process, the planet wasted eight critical years.

As I subsequently commented in a Facebook Post: ‘In 2016 Obama visited Berlin and made a joint appearance with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in which, in very worried tones, he criticized “Fake News” and said — in so many words — that if people take information on the internet just as seriously as the presstitute mainstream media (which he strongly implied has much greater credibility), then we are all in trouble because, as he put it, that “makes it very difficult to govern”. Merkel gave her patented pouty-jowly frown and nodded sagely. That was a very happy day for me. I knew then that we are making progress against the machine. It was an admission from the elites that, if they cannot control the flow of information, their agenda is at risk. For a positive plan, see my post today of the Caitlin Johnstone piece “How to Fight the Establishment Propaganda Machine and Win”.’ (from 11 May).

And, after the last 20 years or so, many of us who stay informed about political and scientific developments, about hard facts beneath the superficial surface layer which is presented by corporate and government-controlled media, are understandably desperate for any ray of hope. I am regularly accused of being a prophet of doom and putting far too bleak a spin on this planet’s future, although it is my practice to attach credible documentation to most such oracular pronouncements. Some “folks” (thanks Barack) appear to believe that I take great pleasure in painting images of impending catastrophe, like some atheist old hippie version of one of those street preachers we used to see in my Tennessee youth wearing a hand-painted sign warning of eternal hellfire if one did not come to JEEEEEzus, all the while shouting dire remonstrations at passers-by – most of whom, in East Tennessee in those days, were already conservative Christians anyway. It’s hard for me to avoid the conclusion that a great many people are not very interested in checking out any of my documentation, any more than we stopped to listen to those street preachers back then, and that includes ostensible “progressives” who generally agree with me about the broad outlines of the make-up of any desirable future sociopolitical order … should we be fortunate enough to have one. No-siree, most people definitely do not want to be convinced that it is 1 minute to midnight on the old Anthropocene Clock.

They want Hope.

And reading Ms Johnstone’s column, which was full of a we-can-do-this encouraging spirit, made me realize how badly I want some of that stuff too. I smiled and felt validated in some ways; validated for telling people repeatedly in recent years that what we do with the internet distribution of political truth represents much more than just “Bitching On Facebook”, to use a term which has been thrown in my face a number of times, usually by people who don’t like to be told that Lesser Evil Voting makes them complicit in the destruction of the environment, the mass murder of people in US-NATO war zones around the world, and the cancerous growth of the worldwide police-surveillance state.

There is no time left to build political movements slowly and patiently. I know there is probably not a single climate-change-denier reading this (since Cockburn is no longer with us), but I’m pretty sure it will be read by some people who think the Paris Accords offer real hope for saving the environment (for example). I am here to tell those of you in that group right now: You have your head deep in the sand. Even the most cursory open-minded review of the latest widespread scientific evidence, findings, and consensus on current environmental developments will leave little room for doubt to anyone not blinded by hope. We do not have fifty years to get our shit together. We may not even have twenty.

But pretty quickly, I came to my senses again and, while recommending in writing the tonic qualities of the skillful Johnstonian wordsmithing and the indubitable truth of her well-argued arguments and cheerful cheerleading to those who persist in reading my stuff in spite of its occasional resemblance to a verbal disaster film, I gave myself a good psychological slap in the face and settled back into my default mode of hopelessness. Let me explain why.

To put it very simply, hope makes things worse. Hope got us where we are today. Which is a very, very dangerous place. If we want to eventually have some hope about this planet’s future which is based on anything other than extreme self-deception, we need to admit that things look pretty fucking grim and hopeless.

But in the most recent election, day after day for two years, I found myself feeling like Bill Murray in “Groundhog Day”, watching in stunned, shocked disbelief as the same brain-numbing bullshit justifications for voting for ecocidal Orwellian mass murderers were trotted out again, word for word, exactly as I have heard them in every election since the Vietnam War made me begin to pay attention to politics.

What would it take? What would have to happen before these people would admit that voting for Democrats because “the Republicans are worse” has for 60 years brought only miniscule, isolated bits of anything one could conceivably call positive change, while simultaneously accelerating our rapid course in the direction of the abyss? Would nuclear war have that effect, perhaps? If Manhattan and Miami were to disappear under water before the next election, might those Lesser Evil Voters then consider abandoning their Democrats, instead of saying that if the Republicans win, the water will soon reach the Smoky Mountains? If enough plastic were to accumulate in the Atlantic that it became possible to walk from Virginia Beach to Lisbon, would we all finally agree that perhaps this please-give-us-jobs-and-we’ll-be-good shit is not working anymore?

For those who continue to assert that things are not that bad, that this is an unnecessarily gloomy outlook, because it makes them feel unbearable fear about their children’s future, because it makes it impossible for them to kick back and “chill out” properly with all of the wonderful little hypnotic gadgets around which our often mindless lives revolve these days, because their personal comfort level tells them that things are in fact quite good, because they think some wise omnipotent invisible being is actually in control of our fate and all of this is just a “test” of some kind and it’s not really up to us at all, or for whatever silly goddamned reason or reasons

It is your hope which makes things hopeless.

Only when we admit that we are racing toward a bottomless pit with the rest of the lemming herd, when we find the courage to reject the superficial comforts and distractions with which our owners lull us into submission, because we know it is this world of comfortable illusion that has robbed us of our future, and when we realize that it is those very owners for whom many of us continue to vote who have doomed us, will we deserve to be described, not as “hopeless”, but as “conscious”.

Some of us may think that, if it is too late already to save the human race, and save all life on this planet – half of all life forms on Earth may be extinct by 2050, according to some predictions – then why not just enjoy the time we have left, and stop fighting?

I sometimes wish for that blissful oblivion, that waking sleep, that creeping death of the boiling frog. But when I think about it a bit, that strikes me as being the most abject and cowardly way to die imaginable. We may not win. But can we please fight? Can we at least adopt as our totem some animal with a bit more perspicacity and nobility than that hapless amphibian?

Maddow: Pied Piper or Dragon Slayer?

Obsessively denouncing Russian phantoms can kill us all.

In embracing with alacrity the campaign of lies about the Trump-Russia connection, or rather, let us be precise, the campaign of lies about the actual national security danger in any past or existing Trump-Russia connection, Rachel Maddow, MSNBC’s fervid russophobe, is but the latest liberal hero to show her true colors, yet another example that liberalism is not only dead as a real option for anyone sensible, but positively radioactive, a plague to be avoided.

Maddow’s recent shows (see below) are being hailed by the clueless as a new coming of Zola’s dogged pursuit of liberating truth, but her self-righteous and much applauded theatrics against Trump are but a smokescreen to something much graver going on in America, something that this woman, if she were half the journalist she pretends to be, would be alerting her audience about instead of indulging in cheap rhetorical antics. I say cheap because attacking Trump is like shooting fish in a barrel. The man (and his entourage) is so inept that he almost sets the stage for his attackers.  The ammo is handed at the door.

Maddow’s fans, blinded by their longtime admiration, and laser-like hatred for Trump, refuse to see such realities.  To most of them Rachel Maddow can do no wrong, she’s their champion, fighting what seems to them like a Quixotic and valiant struggle against a formidable neofascist dragon. Considering that in our age most people can choose their own truth from the well-stocked salad bar of subjective opinion, and to hell with facts, that is indeed their prerogative. However, regardless of whether Trump is such an evil, as he is described by his multitude of opponents, or whether the alternative represented by the CIA-Democrat alliance is much better than his bizarre and erratic rule, I believe the notion that Maddow is such a dragon slayer is itself misguided and wholly undeserved.

For starters, the fascist dragon is no dragon.  He never was. The salient feature in Trump’s makeup is incoherence mixed with ample amounts of stubborn ignorance. That he sometimes comes up with good personal instincts that seem to miraculously escape the conformist imperialist bubble in which the entire political class of the United States dwells is not sufficient compensation. Those are his paltry yet notable (in the current clime of almost total political sociopathy) redeeming qualities. That said, the deeply etched ignorance factor, the intellectual laziness, are hard to overcome. This is and always has been the formula for surefire defeat of anyone aspiring to make his mark as a truly autonomous historical agent. Ignorance bordering on cluelessness is a serious impediment to authentic leadership. It’s hardly an exaggeration to say that at this point Donald Trump cannot control his political destiny because that requires a clear notion of how and where to sail the ship of state, about which he hasn’t the foggiest. He’s obviously trying to catch up and he may be a quick study, but the process implies a long learning curve and his teachers are not reliable. And his attention span concerning “details”—where the devil resides—is measured in microseconds.

In normal, calmer times this would be a salvageable situation. History offers many examples of powerful men whose policies were effectively crafted outside their own mental perimeters. The story of kings and emperors is instructive in this regard.  In general hidden courtiers determine much of a nation’s policies. That is true for monarchs or so-called democracies. France’s Louis XIII rule was essentially the product of Cardinal Richelieu’s statesmanship. Strong, lucid leaders such as a Julius Caesar, Napoleon or an FDR are the exception. Trump’s type of political player however, as we might expect, tends to rely on and be used by submerged parties and sordid actors (who recognize the shape of the vessel and its emptiness). Fact is Trump is an actor, with very narrow gifts, on a stage that at some level, given his pride and fear of failure, must terrify him. The photo-ops— if you look closely—tell the story. Standing with stern mien, jaw jutting out a la Duce, his face supposedly solemn and dignified, while his underlings go through the requisite motions of investiture, etc., shows the strain he absorbs to keep the saucers in the air. He has the look of a man about to be found out as an impostor. Obviously it does not help his psyche that half of the country—for contorted and often dishonest reasons— think exactly that. He’s been out of his depth all along, the fact concealed by the circus surrounding American elections, and the clowns that contested the field with him, a crowd with certifiable idiots like Rick Perry who made even Trump look good.

[dropcap]B[/dropcap]ut the purpose of this article is not to point out Trump’s inadequacies. Using mostly malice, not just truth, which would suffice nicely, the mainstream media has taken care of that.

Some of the lies used to stampede a very gullible audience is that Trump represents a new fascist threat, a latter-day Duce. While anything is possible, Trump at this juncture simply lacks the requisite ingredients to pull a stunt of that magnitude. The differences with the real deal are pronounced. Let’s examine: Besides counting with the solid backing of the ruling classes, and well-organized mass militias by the time they came to power, classic Fascist leaders were all people of some intellectual capability. Mussolini, an avid reader and student of history, was a journalist and lesser member of the postwar intelligentsia in Italy; he wrote many of his own tracts. He gave us in fact one of the earliest and most stable definitions of fascism, the marriage of corporate power and the state. Hitler, less accomplished, was somehow able to hammer out the admittedly turgid and highly toxic Mein Kampf, but we can be sure he used no ghost writers. He could not afford them and his vanity prevented such assistance. Again, that’s well beyond the grasp of Trump’s native abilities, but the man has no trouble delegating when such intellectual challenges arise.

As noted elsewhere, after the Flynn debacle and the Sessions tempest in a teapot which Trump did not manage with honorable decisiveness, many astute observers counted him out, his independence eviscerated by the deep state, which bullied and tricked him.  All that remains is the usual veneer of being the executive in charge, punctuated by the customary displays of flashy braggadocio. His administration as far as a distinctive Trump stamp is concerned, is finished. It is already sailing along the clearly set margins laid down for him by the PTB. In fact, if we reflect about it, that is the nature of the job: American presidents are mostly figureheads for the unchangeable, permanent power of the moneyed elites. Sometimes they are leaders of such elites, in which case the same results obtain. In either case, without their support they cannot get much accomplished. That’s why we have plutocracy instead of genuine democracy in the United States. And it’s been like that for many generations, probably since the nation was born in the cusp of aristocratic privilege in revolt, more acutely and clearly revealed in the last couple of decades, as the system, in frank senility and decline, has begun to lash out in all directions,  showing its true ugly face.  Things are not going to get much prettier from here on out.

Maddow emblematic of pervasive mainstream media dishonesty

Since Trump is not really the threat that his enemies painted and paint, unless they are prepared to admit that the whole rotten system—including them—is the real enemy of humankind, why all the frenzy?

It is in this context of false premises—of establishment engineered and disseminated Fake News— that we must weigh Rachel Maddow’s latest performances, an egotist’s dream, wherein the MSNBC host has been setting new lows for her own partisan standards. Maddow’s activities are dangerous and hypocritical because, at bottom, they are far more about drumming up paranoia over a nonexistent Russian threat—which suits the MIC’s plans for the continuation of a bloated, vampirish defense establishment and the deranged confrontational geopolitical aspirations of the Neocons—than about disposing of the pumped-up Trumpian menace.

Such grand impostures fit a pattern for which the American media, as an institution, from owners to top personnel, should not only be ashamed, but regarded as enemies of society, for, after all, what greater enemy of society is there than those who, like Maddow and her ilk, while supposedly going after Trump’s obscene idiosyncrasies (which naturally include no love for the LGBT community’s identity politics so transparently exploited by the Democrats), keep pushing for a nuclear war that will definitely extinguish all life on this already horribly tormented planet? Can anybody name anything more dangerous and heinous than that?

I wish this were hyperbole but it isn’t.

So yes, Maddow and the media machinery she represents are emblematic of a terminally sick society, a nation cynically ruled by deliberate manipulation. Again, this is hardly an original thought. America has been found to be a pretend democracy—a plutocratic machine masquerading as popular will— by even conservative sociologists lodged in impeccably conservative—indeed Ivy League— universities. Donald Trump Weakens State Dept As Vladimir Putin Would Want | Rachel Maddow | MSNBC

Rachel Maddow shows how the Donald Trump’s State Department under Rex Tillerson is being drastically weakened, a situation that suits Vladimir Putin well in taking U.S. soft power influence out of his way.

The hidden consequences

The complete collapse of the American media as a conduit for anything approaching serviceable information to maintain a workable democracy and the erasure of all vestiges of class struggle represents an extremely dangerous chapter for humanity on many accounts, not the least because normally intelligent people, after decades of conditioning their minds to look at politics exclusively through narrow personal platforms—race, sexuality, gender, etc. something that obviously pleased the ruling class no end—have now totally forgotten what this segmentation has wrought: the self-inflicted inability to look and understand the broader picture. Which for those who claim to be sincere about social struggles is a serious impediment.

The broader picture matters. It always did. Its forced premature retirement, to give way to the supposedly more effective strategies of identity politics, racialism, etc., was as ill-conceived as it was unnecessary, a ruse to substitute a divided left for a unified one, and personal issues for class struggle, a dubious switch that has finally put US society and much of the world on life support.

It is hardly surprising that among the most zealous endorsers of this dubious strategy were members of the affluent liberal class. Media celebs like Maddow, and Hollywood liberals—practically all multimillionaires, some billionaires, and living lives of pampered exclusivity. They were and are the most visible and vocal component of this phenomenon. Never mind that in that sense they cheerfully endorsed a course of action as bogus as the old canard about the end of ideology, that is, the end of class struggle, trumpeted by corporatized academics and their media accomplices barely a generation ago. Perhaps it remains too impolitic to mention, but in this ID politics switcheroo the only people who saw some concrete gains (after hard fought struggles, too) were in the LGBT category, and that’s because, from the ruling class viewpoint, it cost them nothing to concede what these often persecuted people yearned for: equality before the law. Not so with Black America. Giving them some justice would trigger a real redistribution of power in America where it really counts, on the bottom line, not to mention unleash unpredictable ripples through society for which the ruling class is not remotely equipped.

Thus, despite all the brave talk about race, the Democrats never lifted a finger for African Americans, a betrayal all the more despicable given this constituency’s loyalty and the presence for the last decade of a supposedly Black head of state.

These days, in the Trumpian age, with a huge gathering storm on the immediate horizon caused by Washington’s refusal to behave like a normal nation instead of a self righteous bully; with the accelerating breakdown of natural ecosystems; and with the drums of potential nuclear war beating ever louder (by “progressives”, no less), the social costs implicit in the refusal to look at the broader picture are becoming prohibitive.

This rejection further underscores the sheer dishonesty of Maddow’s posturing as a progressive. For the broader picture is the indispensable grid allowing us to organize our priorities in a struggle that packs many seemingly equally urgent fields of combat. Without the broader picture we fight half-blind. With 2-D vision in a 3-D universe. Our priorities get messed up. Our strategies and tactics suffer. Our priority plane is flat. And we end up where we are. With a suicidal choice in 2016 between an utterly corrupt and recklessly warmongering Hillary Clinton and a similarly horrid agent of the plutocracy from the supposedly opposite corral. Confusion wins.

None of this would have happened if the American brainwash had been broken years ago

As just about any thoughtful person realizes today, the state of permanent haze that envelops the American mind is not an accidental occurrence. In the United States, extending fast throughout the world, and already a significant factor in Western Europe, Japan, South Korea, etc., what Western propagandists have long called “the Free World”, manipulated reality is the norm. What virtually unknown pioneers in the field of political propaganda studies like Alex Carey called “managed democracy”.  This pseudo reality, manufactured 24/7 by the most devious and powerful system of mass persuasion ever devised, a natural if dastardly offshoot of capitalism, cancels reality and substitutes pre-digested interpretations.  In far too many cases the unwitting victims of such “reality pre-emption”  become technically brainwashed; others, more alert, see reality in isolated pieces, devoid of the larger pattern permitting the necessary quantum jump in consciousness. They often begin to doubt their own perceptions. A type of spiteful, belligerent, but essentially uninformed and misguided individualism frequently takes over. In the event, as far as the system is concerned, opposition weakens, unified concerted action becomes more difficult or impossible. Resistance is nipped in the bud for most, and either indifference or fatalism invade those who intuit the disease but lack the basic tools to complete the diagnosis. Further, by being denied access and visibility on the corporate media true dissenters are hard put to estimate their own numbers and the potential of their ideas. The upshot is the squalid stagnation we inhabit in which quiet desperation is almost the rule for many who suffer in silence and frustration. This site is written by and for those who dissent from the official narrative. Those who know that a very different, much better world, is possible.

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]his is why during the eight long years of the Obama regime, an administration that distinguished itself not only for its off-the-charts hypocrisy and abject subservience to the global plutocracy, but for its brutal, underhanded, genocidal wars and turmoil in Libya, Syria, Iraq, Ukraine and other lands, an aggression that destroyed the lives of millions and flooded Europe with refugees, an administration that, we should add, never shied from recklessly taunting Russia, a major nuclear power, via false flags, coups, provocations on her borders, and the most baseless demonization…throughout this disgusting period neither the media nor the liberals who rise today in self-righteous condemnation of Trump (however merited this indignation may be)  ever uttered one word of real criticism—let alone mount an obsessive campaign of nonstop vilification. It is a safe assumption that Barack Obama, one of the slickest demagogs this country has seen since The Great Communicator, well surpasses Ronnie’s high Teflon index. But Obama went one better. Not only did his crimes and betrayals fail to tarnish his image; he also managed to anesthetize all possible opposition to his imperialist agenda. Under Obama, the environmental movement went to sleep, and the antiwar movement—still visible under Bush2, simply ceased to exist.

In this regard I regret to say that Maddow, “the out MSNBC host” as the LGBT publication Advocate chooses to call her in a recent article celebrating her anti-Trump crusade, is apparently contributing to the same disabling effect on liberals as Obama had during his tenure, making them forget the bigger picture.

But Maddow, gay or not gay, is doing something now that goes way beyond attacking Trump for his troglodyte views on sexuality, immigrants or whatever you want to accuse him of. Maddow, whose intelligence cannot be doubted, is consciously part of a cabal seeking to topple Trump on the basis of lies. But not lies about his character and tawdry resume, about which—as has been shown abundantly since the man became a factor in US politics —there is certainly no shortage of material, but about his supposedly criminal and treasonable connections with Russia, a nation with which we are still technically at peace. And this is where it gets dangerous and ugly, fast, and where Maddow deserves condemnation. For this is what these faux progressive people—and their friends in the suddenly popular CIA—are doing: pushing and preparing the American nation to accept a war with Russia, Iran, China and who knows what or who else, all in compliance with the original Neocon script to assure permanent American dominance over the entire world. And by “American dominance” we know what that means, the dominance of America’s overlords, the 0.00001%  running this country to the cleaners in pursuit of their relentless drive for power and profits.

Maybe when we look at it that way, from the requisite broader and deeper perspective, what Maddow is doing, along with her numerous cohorts in the sanctimonious liberal media, does not strike us as the work of an enlightened and admirable individual any more. I take no pride of originality in this observation. Helping to sell “wars of choice” is already classified as a capital crime against humanity under Nuremberg international statutes, which US law is judicially bound to respect. We hanged press lords in Nazi Germany for lesser offences. In a recent piece (which was not intended to be read as a defense of Donald Trump), and which surely gained him no converts in the legions of brain-fogged liberals who take their cues from pseudo-progressive icons in the Democratic party and the crowded gallery of liberal mavens, Paul Craig Roberts questioned the basic sanity of those who would criminalize all efforts to defuse the utterly hypocritical and baseless hostility manufactured against Russia—a nation that persists in seeking peace but which remains capable of wiping out the entire United States in a few minutes if pushed beyond endurance—a limit we are clearly approaching. He summed up the situation with customary candor:

Americans do not need any more evidence that the entirety of the American media is totally devoid of integrity and respect for truth. The American media is a collection of whores who lie for a living. The presstitutes are despicable, the scum of the earth.

Considering what Maddow and her ilk are doing, was the outspoken Roberts exaggerating? While he wasn’t exactly “politically correct” in the way he said it, his logic cannot be faulted, and many clear-thinking, decent people share his view. I certainly do. Fact is, we find ourselves on the brink of cataclysmic war, with most people throughout the “West” scandalously unaware or indifferent to the risks represented by wanton Russophobic talk. Thus, In the artificial climate of confrontation based on lies manufactured by the Deep State and disseminated by the media and anti-Trump politicians, and triumphantly amplified by the millions of idiots who repeat this dangerous nonsense,

[I]f Trump wants to defuse the extremely dangerous tensions that the reckless Clinton, George W. Bush, and Obama regimes have resurrected with a powerful thermo-nuclear state that only wants peace with the US, President Trump and any of his appointees who spoke to a Russian are [automatically] unfit for office! This madness is the position of the idiot liberal/progressive/left, the CIA, the Democratic Party, the right-wing morons of the Republican Party such as Lindsey Graham and John McCain, and the two-bit whores that comprise the Western media. (Paul Craig Roberts, What is to be done)

“Idiot liberal/progressive/left…two-bit whores of the Western media.” The description is harsh but apt. And it suits the Rachel Maddows of this world to a T.  Time has come to dust off Joe Welch’s legendary question to Joe McCarthy and apply it to this new type of reckless information poisoner:

Have you no decency, Rachel Maddow?

I guess there is no use waiting for an honest answer to that.
