During the last two years I have tried to draw attention to what is occurring in Israel:

March 3, 2014Ukraine’s Ultra-right Deconstructed

“A Ukrainian-born former soldier in the Israel Defense Forces led about 40 fighters, including several fellow IDF veterans — in violent clashes with government forces in the Maidan.”

“Israel’s support for the putsch in Kiev shows that the new fascism differs only from the old one in not being anti-Semitic.”

September 16, 2014 Good News From Sweden – Sort Of

“If I often write about fascism, it’s because it is the lynchpin of current events. Fascism comes in many stripes and colors. The old fascism, which revolved around anti-Semitism, is still represented by Ukraine’s Right Sektor and its wolfangel-wearing thugs. With the new fascism, Israel is officially Washington’s junior partner, in practice often wagging its tail. Europe’s centuries-old anti-Semitism has been reinvigorated by Israel’s attitude toward the Palestinians, while a more recent one targets immigration.”

April 27, 2015 Hillary’s Latest Embarrassment is About ‘Capitalism with a Human Face’

About 15,000 people marched through Kiev to honor Stepan Bandera, the leader of Ukraine’s Neonazi collaborationist movement. Amazing how the American media manages to miss even something as massive as that.

“There appears to be no widespread recognition of the fact that capitalism’s human face obscures its rationalization of fascism.  Yet the legally elected president of Ukraine could not have been overthrown without the private fascist militias such as Right Sektor, whose leader Dmitri Yaros became the new government’s head of security. And without an unspoken acceptance of strong-arm techniques, we would not be witnessing fascism in such theoretically unlikely places as Israel and Norway.

Israel was meant to guarantee a home to a people that had been slaughtered en masse because of who they were, and Norway is one of the Scandinavian countries that represent the highest level of civilization attained by humans. Norway has an anti-immigration fascist movement, while some Israelis joined the thugs in the Maidan, and recently others called for the death of Palestinians in a yearly march through Jerusalem’s remaining Arab neighborhoods.”

In this summer of 2016, as the American people dither over whether Donald Trump is qualified to be president, while their government supports both Islamic terrorists and the Israeli government, it’s clear that fascism is not a twentieth century aberration, but a many-headed hydra that will not soon be vanquished.

Update Fascism in Israel 2016: Following on the June 9 killing of four Israelis by two Palestinian gunmen in Tel Aviv, Israel sent two divisions of soldiers into the West bank, and one minister said it should annex part of the area and expel all Arabs.

On May 21, 2016, Uri Avnery an Israeli writer and founder of the Gush Shalom peace movement had posted this article at https://portside.org/search/site/URI%20AVNERY:

A real-life hero of Israel's foundational wars in the 1940s, and inspiration for Leon Uris' Ari Ben Canaan character in his novel Exodus, Uri Avnery has won the right to serve as Israel's conscience in her atrocious treatment of Palestinians.

A real-life hero of Israel’s foundational wars in the 1940s, and inspiration for Leon Uris’ Ari Ben Canaan character in his novel Exodus, Uri Avnery has won the right to serve as Israel’s conscience in her atrocious treatment of Palestinians.

“I can’t keep quiet any longer……

“My book did not deal with the Holocaust, which took place when I was already living in Palestine, but with a question which troubled me throughout the years, and even today: how could it happen that Germany, perhaps the most cultured nation on earth at the time, the homeland of Goethe, Beethoven and Kant, could democratically elect a raving psychopath like Adolf Hitler as its leader?….

“General Golan was accused of comparing Israel to Nazi Germany. Nothing of the sort. A careful reading of his text shows that he compared developments in Israel to the events that led to the disintegration of the Weimar Republic. And that is a valid comparison…….

“Things happening in Israel, especially since the last election, bear a frightening similarity to those events. True, the process is quite different. German fascism arose from the humilia-tion of surrender in World War I, the occupation of the Ruhr by France and Belgium from 1923-25, the terrible economic crisis of 1929, the misery of millions of unemployed. Israel is victorious in its frequent military actions, we live comfortable lives. The dangers threatening us are of a quite different nature. They stem from our victories, not from our defeats. In-deed, the differences between Israel today and Germany then are far greater than the simi-larities. But those similarities do exist, and the general was right to point them out….

“The discrimination against the Palestinians in practically all spheres of life can be compared to the treatment of the Jews in the first phase of Nazi Germany.…

“Of course, no one in their right mind would even remotely compare Netanyahu to the Fuhrer, but there are political parties here which do emit a strong fascist smell. The political riffraff peopling the present Netanyahu government could easily have found their place in the first Nazi government….

“Am I condemned to witness the same process for the second time in my life?”

Not all diaspora Jews support Israeli policies. Including many orthodox who condemn Zionism on religious and sociopolitical grounds. (Image: Neturei Karta members protest Zionist actions in Gaza.)

Isn’t it time that more American Jews spoke to these grave issues?

The New, Old Authoritarianism of Donald Trump

Screen Shot 2016-01-23 at 2.38.28 PMHenry A. Giroux
Cultural Critic and Public Intellectual

Donald Trumppale blue horiz

The following is an excerpt from the new book America at War with Itself by Henry A. Giroux (City Lights, 2016).

Editor's Note
There is definitely much to be gained by stepping back and taking a look at Trump and the movement he has spawned in an historical context - particularly a socio-historical context. The United States has a long history of recycling nativism. Indeed, it rarely moves too deeply from the surface of contemporary culture as it is directly linked the American exceptionalism, and that over-blown pride of nation is embedded with ethnocentrism, and that is tied to nativism. What is also embedded in all of these words is the assumption of "white." So not only are we looking at xenophobia, but a cultural ideology that clings tightly to white power and the belief that we are a white nation. In this conceptualization it become clear that non-whites and non-Christians are "contaminating" American, and that making America great again mean removiung the contamination. It is also important to highlight that this trip through the nativist loop is occurring in a modern environment of when corporate mind set has become the daily parlance and monopoly capitalism is a consistent feature of life.

Add to these considerations the sad fact that we have become a society that seemingly has a bottomless capacity to consume "shock and awe" and indeed it is integrated into the constant stimulation that surrounds us. We have embraced the "shock jock" and made them celebrities. Indeed, in my opinion, it is this "shock jock" persona that is so loved by Trump's followers.

In the current historical moment in the United States, the assault on social tolerance is nourished by the assault on the civic imagination. One of the most egregious examples of these attacks can be found in the political rise of Donald Trump. Trump’s popular appeal speaks not just to the boldness of what he says and the shock his inflamed rhetoric provokes, but the increasingly large numbers of Americans who respond to his aggressive bigotry with the eagerness of an angry lynch mob. Marie Luise Knott is right in noting, “We live our lives with the help of the concepts we form of the world. They enable an author to make the transition from shock to observation to finally creating space for action—for writing and speaking. Just as laws guarantee a public space for political action, conceptual thought ensures the existence of the four walls within which judgment operates.” The concepts that now guide our understanding of American society are produced by a corporate-influenced model that brings ruin to language, community, and democracy itself.

Missing from most of the commentaries by mainstream media regarding the current rise of Trumpism is any historical context that would offer a critical account of the ideological and political disorders plaguing U.S. society. A resurrection of historical memory in this moment could provide important lessons regarding the present crisis, particularly the long tradition of white racial hegemony, exceptionalism, and the extended wars on youth, women, immigrants, people of color, and the economically disadvantaged. As Chip Berlet points out, what is missing from most media accounts are traces of history that would make clear that Trump’s presence on the American political landscape is the latest expression of a long tradition of “populist radical right ideology—nativism, authoritarianism, and populism . . . not unrelated to mainstream ideologies and mass attitudes. In fact, they are best seen as a radicalization of mainstream values.” Berlet goes even further, arguing that “Trump is not an example of creeping totalitarianism; he is the injured and grieving white man growing hoarse with bigoted canards while riding at the forefront of a new nativist movement.” For Adele M. Stan, like Berlet, the real question that needs to be asked is: “What is wrong with America that this racist, misogynist, money-cheating clown should be the frontrunner for the presidential nomination of one of its two major parties?” Berlet is on target when he suggests that understanding Trump in terms of fascism is not enough. But Berlet is wrong in suggesting that all that the Trump “clown wagon” represents is a more recent expression of the merger of right-wing populism and racist intolerance. History does not stand still, and as important as these demagogic elements are, they have taken on a new meaning within a different historical conjuncture and have been intensified through the registers of a creeping totalitarianism wedded to a new and virulent form of savage capitalism. Racism, bigotry, and xenophobia are certainly on Trump’s side, but  According to Lofgren, a managed democracy has been produced in the United States by a culture of war and fear, especially since the massacre of thousands of Americans on 9/11. The effects of such a war psychosis were evident in the lies made by the Bush administration regarding nonexistent weapons of mass destruction, lies that were repeated ad nauseam to dupe Americans into an unjustified war against Iraq. It is also evident in the rise of the national insecurity surveillance state and its declared notion that everyone is a potential suspect, a notion that helps to further the internalization of the Terror Wars. Another boost to America’s culture of fear, insecurity, and war was the economic crash of 2008, which furthered anxiety to levels not seen since the Great Depression. Amidst this decade-long culture of fear and war, Lofgren argues that the United States may very well become a fascist political system by 2017.

Predictions about America’s descent into fascism are not new and should surprise no one who is historically literate. Rick Perlstein is correct in arguing that Trump provides a service in making clear how conservative ideology works at its deepest levels, and that he exposes the hypocrisy of dressing reactionary politics in a discourse of liberation. Journalists such as Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan predictably downplay the racist and fascist undertones of Trump’s candidacy, arguing that Trump is simply a symptom of massive disillusionment among Americans who are exhibiting a profound disdain, if not hatred, for the political and economic mainstream elites. Disappointingly, however, this argument is often bolstered by progressives who claim that criticism of Trump’s bigotry and racism cannot fully account for his political appeal. For instance, Thomas Frank observes that Trump actually embraces a number of left-leaning positions that make him popular with less educated working-class whites. He cites Trump’s criticism of free trade agreements, his call for competitive bidding with the drug industry, his critique of the military-industrial-complex and its wasteful spending, and his condemnation of companies that displace U.S. workers by closing factories in the United States and opening them in much less developed countries such as Mexico in order to save on labor costs.

In this view, the working class becomes a noble representative of a legitimate populist backlash against neoliberalism, and whether or not it embraces an American form of proto-fascism seems irrelevant. Frank, however, has a long history of ignoring cultural issues, ideologies, and values that do not simply mimic the economic system. As Ellen Willis pointed out in a brilliant critique of Frank’s work, he makes the mistake of imagining popular and media culture as simply “a pure reflection of the corporate class that produces it.” Hence, racism, ultra-nationalism, bigotry, religious fundamentalism, and other anti-democratic factors get downplayed in Frank’s analysis of Trump’s rise to power. This view is reductionist and ignores research indicating that a large body of Trump supporters, who back explicit authoritarian polices, rarely complain about the predatory economic policies pushed by the Republican and Democratic parties. If anything, such economic pressures intensify these deep-seated authoritarian attitudes. What Trump’s followers have in common is support for a number of authoritarian policies mobilized around “an outsize fear of threats, physical and social, and, more than that, a desire to meet those threats with severe government action—with policies that are authoritarian not just in style but in actuality.” Such policies include:

Using military force over diplomacy against countries that threaten the United States; changing the Constitution to bar citizenship for children of illegal immigrants; imposing extra airport checks on passengers who appear to be of Middle Eastern descent in order to curb terrorism; requiring all citizens to carry a national ID card at all times to show to a police officer on request, to curb terrorism; allowing the federal government to scan all phone calls for calls to any number linked to terrorism.

John Judis extends this progressive line of argument by comparing Trump with Bernie Sanders, claiming that they are both populists and outsiders while suggesting that Trump occupies a legitimate outsider status and raises a number criticisms regarding domestic policies for which he should be taken seriously by the American people and not simply dismissed as a racist, clown, or pompous showman. Judis writes:

“Sanders and Trump differ dramatically on many issues—from immigration to climate change—but both are critical of how wealthy donors and lobbyists dominate the political process, and both favor some form of campaign finance reform. Both decry corporations moving overseas for cheap wages and to avoid American taxes. Both reject trade treaties that favor multinational corporations over workers. And both want government more, rather than less, involved in the economy. Sanders is a left-wing populist. He wants to defend the “collapsing middle class” against the “billionaire class” that controls the economy and politics. He is not a liberal who wants to reconcile Wall Street and Main Street, or a socialist who wants the working class to abolish capitalism. Trump is a right-wing populist who wants to defend the American people from rapacious CEOs and from Hispanic illegal immigrants. He is not a conventional business conservative who thinks government is the problem and who blames America’s ills on unions and Social Security. Both men are foes of what they describe as their party’s establishment. And both campaigns are also fundamentally about rejecting the way economic policy has been talked about in American presidential politics for decades.”

Some liberals, such as Arthur Goldhammer, go so far as to suggest that Trump’s appeal is largely an extension of the “cult of celebrity,” his management of “a very rational and reasonable set of business practices,” and his attention to the anger of a disregarded element of the working class. He asserts without irony that Trump “is not an authoritarian but a celebrity,” as if one cancels out the other. While celebrity culture confers authority in a society utterly devoted to consumerism, it also represents less a mode of false identification than a manufactured spectacle that cheapens serious and thoughtful discourse and puts into play a focus on the commercial world of fashion, style, and appearances. This has given rise to mainstream media that devalue politics, treat politicians as celebrities, refuse to give them a serious hearing, and are unwilling to raise tough questions. Precisely because it is assumed that celebrities are too dumb to answer such questions and that the public is more concerned about their personal lives than anything else, they are too often exempt from being held accountable for what they say, especially if it doesn’t square comfortably with the spectacle of banality. Celebrity culture is not simply a mode of entertainment, it is a form of public pedagogy central to creating a formative culture that views thinking as a nuisance at best, or at worst, as dangerous. Treated seriously, celebrity culture provides the architectural framing for an authoritarian culture by celebrating a deadening form of self-interest, narcissism, and civic illiteracy. As Fritz Stern, the renowned historian of Germany, has argued, the dark side of celebrity culture can be understood by the fact that it gave rise to Trump and represents the merger of financial power and a culture of thoughtlessness.

Roger Berkowitz, the director of the Hannah Arendt Center, takes Goldhammer’s argument further and claims that Trump is a celebrity who knows how to work the “art of the deal” (a reference to the title of Trump’s well-known neoliberal manifesto). That is, Trump is a celebrity with real business acumen and substance. In particular, he argues, Trump’s appeal is due in part to his image as a smart and successful businessman who gets things done. Berkowitz goes into overdrive in his claim that Trump is not a Hitler, as if that means he is not a demagogue unique to the American context. Without irony, Berkowitz goes so far as to write, “It is important to recognize that Trump’s focus on illegal immigrants, protectionism, the wall on the Mexican border, and the terrorist danger posed by Muslims transcends race.” I am assuming he means that Trump’s racist ideology, policies, and rhetoric can be removed from the poisonous climate of hate that he promotes, the policies for which he argues (such as torture, which is a war crime), and the violence he breeds at his rallies. Indeed, Berkowitz implies that these policies and practices derive not from a fundamental orientation of white intolerance but from a sound understanding of free-market economics and business.

Trump signifies the marshaling of self-destructive white anxiety, bigotry, and intolerance to the service of an exclusionary grid of economic, military, surveillance, police, and corporate self-interest. Rather than view Trump as an eccentric clown, perhaps it is time to portray him in a historical context connected with the West’s totalitarian past, a story that needs to be publicly retold and remembered. By making such connections and telling such stories, we strengthen ourselves and spread the insurgent call to prevent contemporary manifestations from gaining further ground.

The great writer James Baldwin once said we are living in dangerous times, that the society in which we are living is “menaced from within,” and that young people have to “go for broke.” And while he acknowledged that “going for broke” would mean meeting the “most determined resistance,” he argued that it was necessary for young people to rise up and use their energy to reclaim their right to live with dignity, justice, equity, and a sense of possibility. Baldwin got it right, and so do the young people who are now taking up this challenge and, in doing so, are imagining a future free of the menace of totalitarianism that now hangs like a punishing sandstorm over our current political moment.

Armageddon Approaches

By Paul Craig Roberts
horiz grey line

tgplogo12313

The Western public doesn’t know it, but Washington and its European vassals are convincing Russia that they are preparing to attack. Eric Zuesse reports on a German newspaper leak of a Bundeswehr decision to declare Russia to be an enemy nation of Germany.

This is the interpretation that some Russian politicians themselves have put on the NATO military bases that Washington is establishing on Russia’s borders.

Pres. Putin shaking hands with Vladimir Zhirinovsky.

Pres. Putin shaking hands with Vladimir Zhirinovsky.

Washington might intend the military buildup as pressure on President Putin to reduce Russian opposition to Washington’s unilateralism. However, it reminds some outspoken Russians such as Vladimir Zhirinovsky of Hitler’s troops on Russia’s border in 1941.

rus-Vladimir Zhirinovsky-pensive

A rightfully concerned Zhirinovsky.

Zhirinovsky is the founder and leader of Russia’s Liberal Democratic Party and a vice chairman of the Russian parliament. In a confrontation with the editor of a German newspaper, Zhirinovsky tells him that German troops again on Russia’s border will provoke a preventive strike after which nothing will remain of German and NATO troops. “The more NATO soldiers in your territory, the faster you are going to die. To the last man. Remove NATO from your territory!” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQm8L8d8uDc

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has expressed his frustration with Washington’s reliance on force and coercion instead of diplomacy. It is reckless for Washington to convince Russia that diplomacy is a dead end without promise. When the Russians reach that conclusion, force will confront force.

Indeed Zhirinovsky has already reached that point and perhaps Vladimir Putin also. As I reported, Putin recently dressed down Western presstitutes for their role in fomenting nuclear war. http://www.paulcraigroberts.org/2016/07/08/are-you-planning-your-retirement-forget-about-it-you-wont-survive-to-experience-it/ See also: http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article45055.htm

Putin has made it clear that Russia will not accept US missile bases in Poland and Romania. He has informed Washington and the imbecilic Polish and Romanian governments. However, as Putin observed, “they don’t hear.”

The inability to hear means that Washington’s arrogance has made Washington too stupid to take seriously Putin’s warning. If Washington persists, it will provoke the preventive strike that Zhirinovsky told the German editor the Merkel regime was inviting.

Americans need to wake up to the dangerous situation that Washington has created, but I doubt they will. Most wars happen without the public’s knowledge until they happen. The main function of the American left-wing is to serve as a bogyman with which to scare conservatives about the country’s loss of morals, and the main function of conservatives is to create fear and hysteria about immigrants, Muslims, and Russians. There is no sign that Congress is aware of approaching Armageddon, and the media consists of propaganda.

I and a few others try to alert people to the real threats that they face, but our voices are not loud enough. Not even Vladimir Putin’s voice is loud enough. It looks like the West won’t hear until “there remains nothing at all of the German and NATO troops,” and of Poland and Romania and the rest of us.

The Europeans Are Going to Revolt Against NATO

It is dawning on the Europeans that NATO is nothing but bad news for them

Leaders watch a ceremony honoring NATO military personnel for their service. (May 20, 2012. REUTERS/Jim Young )

The NATO summit in Warsaw is a part of the nuclear “chicken game”. Washington and the NATO Generals are trying to provoke Russia into an escalation of tensions, because certain circles in the US are becoming desperate over their diminishing power over the world. And they are really losing it. They see a military escalation as the only thing to save their control. The stationing of troops in Eastern Europe on the borders of Belarus and Russia is an extreme provocation – they are absolutely unnecessary for the security of Poland or the Baltic States. It’s a very foolish move on the part of NATO.

Russia has made it clear that it is not the aggressor in this situation. Since Washington’s coup d’état in Kiev, NATO had their guns so close, trying everything possible to provoke Russia to make a so-called aggressive move. But Russia has not done that – and it is creating great frustration in Washington, especially in the military industry complex. They have to create fear for the American people of a new war with Russia, but it’s not working. This is the remarkable thing. These are pathetic attempts at trying to hold onto power.

But power is being lost – just look at Brexit. The EU is slowly going to dissolve one state after the other. All the measures had been taken to hold the union together but it’s not working. NATO just added chaos instead of offering stability. Now there is a very strong opposition in the EU countries to all kinds of Washington’s provocations against Russia. The foreign minister of Germany indicated this quite openly.

These NATO provocations against Russia are very unnecessary. There is enormous opposition under the surface. Politicians may put on public face that everything is fine with NATO, but in reality there is a great anxiety. Germans do not want another war with Russia. The horror of the last one was terrible. But America just doesn’t care about anyone outside of the United States. This is an extraordinary situation. The more the war hawks push across the Atlantic, the more resistance there will be in the EU.

To Americans, war is in this far off land, on TV set in a comfortable couch with a nice cold beer and popcorn. Only to be switch off when it is time for bed.

You confuse the American people for those who occupy us. Elites, neocons, banking cabal, whatever you want to call them. Those who enslave us also enslave you. There will always be war until the people of the world throw off the criminals and bring them to justice. They hide here in our government, they hide in Britain, they hide in Europe, they hide everywhere. They have all the wealth and power, if we kick them out of one country, they go somewhere else. There will not be peace until the world brings every one of them to justice. There can be no country where they can hide.

There is no such thing as American exceptionalism. Or adventurism. But the tyrants and criminals tell you these things to distract you from themselves.

Very well said.I will add that every single empire has crumbled from within and US will be no exception.
I will point out the following dates:Dec 25-1913.The day the Fed Res was created. Private banking cartel printing money out of thin air and loaning it to the USG with interest.Once you own the economic system(money supply) you also own the political system .

Nov-1963 Assassination of JFK by elements from USG
This is the day that America become a full fledged police state and a danger to world peace.

Too many false flags(Boston,Conecticut,Florida Texas,San Bernardino etc) on US soil as well as on allied countries(Gladio ops)

Civil war, race war,a huge false flag blamed on other country/countries or an economic collapse of biblical proportions are just around the corner.

Warmongering and historical falsification on 75th anniversary of German invasion of Soviet Union

black-horizontalTHE WEST’S GREAT WAR AGAINST RUSSIA
Syria, the Ukraine, and other battlefields are just proxy conflicts. The object is the defeat and destruction of Russia as an independent world power.

On 22 June, 1941, the German Wehrmacht invaded the Soviet Union without warning and initiated a war of annihilation that took the lives of 27 million Soviet citizens. In Germany, the 75th anniversary of this historic crime is taking place against the background of new preparations for war by NATO against Russia. In ongoing maneuvers, German tanks are once again rolling toward the Russian border. At the same time, the criminal character of the 1941 attack on the Soviet Union, called “Operation Barbarossa” by the Nazi regime, is being minimized.

The German government has refused to organize any form of official commemoration of one of the greatest crimes in human history. President Joachim Gauck did not regard the anniversary of the attack as a reason to travel to Russia. Instead, he visited Romania and Bulgaria.

In the hour-long debate held by the Bundestag (parliament) to mark the anniversary, superficial and empty professions of German guilt for the horrors of the Eastern campaign were overshadowed by aggressive rhetoric against Russia. Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier accused Russia of breaking the Helsinki Final Act with its annexation of Crimea. He urged a strong German “defence readiness” and demanded that “military capabilities” be adapted to the changed security situation.

Christian Democratic Union (CDU) parliamentary deputy Elisabeth Motschmann accused Russia of regarding war as a political instrument of foreign policy. Germany had to remain “ready to defend itself” by means of the Bundeswehr (German military) and NATO. Left Party deputy Gregor Gysi attacked Russia for the “annexation of Crimea contrary to international law.” (sic)

Three-quarters of a century after German imperialism reduced the continent of Europe to ruins, Germany’s ruling elite is reviving its militarist traditions. That it is using the anniversary of Operation Barbarossa for this purpose is cynical and criminal in the extreme.

At the beginning of 2014, Steinmeier, Gauck and Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen announced “the end of [German] military restraint .” This return to military great power politics required that the monstrous crimes of German imperialism be glossed over. Hence the turn to historical falsification.

Amid all these ugly developments it can’t be emphasized enough that it is and has been the US ruling class and its global machinery of despicable propaganda that has enabled and currently abets the re-emergence of aggressive militarism in both Japan and Germany.

For example, Green Party parliamentary deputy Marieluise Beck said at the beginning of her speech in the Bundestag that the Second World War was initiated not only by Germany, but also by the Soviet Union’s invasion of Poland.

MarieLuise Beck: Conveniently erasing culpability to re-enable the same crimes. And these people have the audacity to call themselves "Christian"!

German Christian Democrat MarieLuise Beck: Conveniently erasing Nazi culpability to re-enable the same crimes. And these people have the audacity to label their filthy reactionary party, “Christian”.

Christian Social Union (CSU) deputy Alois Karl even called the Soviet Union an “aggressor” that had made common cause with the Nazi regime in the division of Central and Eastern Europe into spheres of influence. He quoted an elderly lady from Latvia, according to whom “both aggressive regimes” were responsible for the victims in her home country.

Soviet leadership’s (putative) crimes were used to downplay Germany’s war guilt and the bestial nature of the war of annihilation. This was stated even more bluntly in an article in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung on 20 June. Nikolai Klimeniouk accused Steinmeier of referring to the Germans as perpetrators “as if Nazi Germany had invaded the peaceful Soviet Union in an ahistorical space outside any context.”

    Nikolai Klimeniouk

    N. Klimeniouk: An odious Ukrainian journo,  quite probably a CIA disinformation asset.

Klimeniouk (a rightwing Ukrainian and former editor of Forbes Russia) made the Soviet Union responsible for the civilian and military victims of the German attack. The “high death toll of the USSR in the German-Soviet War” was “just as much due to the Soviet Union as the German aggressor,” he wrote.

The author directly combined this stunning historical falsification with a call to prepare for war against Russia, which he accused of continuing its “Great Patriotic War” up to the present day. Germany should not close its eyes “to this military aggression” or stand idly by and watch the “abuse of a common traumatic history,” Klimeniouk wrote.

The falsification of history to justify the revival of German militarism could not be more brazen. To this end, Klimeniouk as well as a number of speakers in the Bundestag employed lies previously used only by far-right revanchist tendencies.

[dropcap]A[/dropcap]fter World War II, the Nazi myth that the German attack was mounted to forestall an imminent assault by the Soviet Union was maintained by right-wing circles in Germany. When historical research showed this argument to be completely baseless, Ernst Nolte provoked the so-called “Historikerstreit” (Historians’ Dispute) in 1986 with his claim that the war of annihilation had been an understandable response to the violence of the Bolsheviks. Nolte too has been thoroughly refuted.

Those who now claim that the Soviet Union was an aggressor just like Nazi Germany build on these discredited myths.

The Nazis’ racist war of extermination against the Soviet Union expressed the historic interests of German imperialism and international capitalism, which sought to destroy the Soviet Union and create “Lebensraum in the East.” Hitler’s will to destruction, which he formulated in Mein Kampf in 1925, is meticulously documented.

Stalin’s politics, unlike Hitler’s, were not directed at imperialist conquest. Behind Stalin’s policies was the fear of the counterrevolutionary bureaucracy he headed that the Soviet proletariat might rise up against its rule. In the Great Terror of 1937-38, the Stalin regime had already liquidated the officer corps of the Red Army and the leaders of the 1917 October Revolution, severely weakening the Soviet Union. [This is just one interpretation of these events, naturally preferred by Trotkyist writers. The Russo—German non-aggression pact—NOT an alliance—was signed by Stalin due to the Soviet leadership’s correct perception that the West would sooner or later attack the USSR and that the nation needed to prepare itself for such an onslaught. This proved totally correct.—Eds]

The bureaucracy no longer based the defence of the Soviet Union on the international working class, but rather on alliances with imperialist powers–first with France and England, and then, when these powers did not oppose Hitler at Munich, with Nazi Germany. Stalin’s 1939 pact with Hitler disoriented the international working class and facilitated Germany’s long-planned attack on the Soviet Union.

Despite this, after initial setbacks, the Red Army and the Soviet people mounted a heroic struggle. The counteroffensive of the Red Army that began in December of 1941 embodied the anti-fascist resistance of the Soviet masses and the international working class. The crushing blows delivered by the Red Army broke the back of the Wehrmacht and played the main role in Hitler’s defeat.

    Knopp, Baberowski and Neitzel

Shameless historical hack Guido Knopp. Spreading blatant disinformation.

Shameless historical hack Guido Knopp. In the business of spreading blatant disinformation.

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]oday, to justify the Bundeswehr’s present wars, this historical truth is under attack. Guido Knopp has taken up this task on public television. The right-wing historian and journalist, who studied under the revisionist historian Werner Maser, has long been known for his distortion of history on Germany’s public channel number two (Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen).

On June 19, he focused his broadcast for the Phoenix news program on the theme: “Operation Barbarossa–turning point in World War II?” To this end, he invited two right-wing historians, Jörg Baberowski and Sönke Neitzel, as well as Kristiane Janeke.

Baberowski is one of the leading representatives of German historical revisionism. In February 2014, he declared in an article in Der Spiegel: “Nolte was wrongly treated. Historically speaking, he was right.” In his own work, he implies that Stalin had considered an attack on Germany and that he and his generals had forced the Wehrmacht to adopt the methods of a war of annihilation.

Neitzel also relativizes the crimes of German militarism. In January 2014, in the daily Die Welt, he claimed that Germany had pursued defensive objectives in the First World War.

The discussion on the Phoenix program unfolded accordingly. At the very beginning, the host, Knopp, questioned whether the Eastern campaign had been planned as a war of extermination, something that had been generally deemed a historical and legal fact ever since the Nuremberg trials.

“Was it the implementation of Hitler’s long-cherished plan of Lebensraum in the East, or was he reacting, first of all, to the war situation?” asked Knopp.

“It was a bit of both,” Neitzel said. “There is always the question of whether we can really believe that Hitler had a plan.”

Knopp then went on to make the Soviet Union jointly culpable for the Nazis’ methods of destruction, saying, “Barbarossa was conceived from the outset as a campaign of destruction, but as long as it lasted, this war was conducted brutally, yes, by both sides. A bloody spiral of violence. Had both sides mutually incited each other?”

“Absolutely,” replied Baberowski, and later added: “The interesting thing is that the Bolsheviks–who had already shown this during the occupation of Poland–acted with very similar methods in the rear. Deporting imaginary enemies, collective stigmatization, weeding out entire groups of people from society. That was horrible in a different way, but it followed, so to speak, the same logic, the same principle.”

Baberowski went on to equate the actions of the Red Army with the planned racist extermination of European Jewry: “To make this clear in an example: when the Wehrmacht conquered Rostov-on-Don in 1941, all the city’s Jews were murdered. A little later, when the Red Army recaptured the city for a short time, all Germans and minorities suspected of collaborating with the Germans were killed. Not along social, but ethnic lines.”

Neitzel seized on this claim to argue that Soviet soldiers had served as a model for the Nazis in their extermination strategy. “And partly, yes, even Goebbels said: We must learn from the Red Army… The way the Red Army conducts war, there were perceptions, today we would speak of transfer history, how they do things, so radically, that is actually the way we have to do it.”

The participants in the programme inflated these outrageous historical falsifications to the point of asserting that one had to “refute” the “myth” that the Red Army liberated Eastern Europe and Germany. “Was that liberation?” asked Knopp. “Mass rape, replacing one dictatorship with another. Not only in the Baltics, also in the GDR [East Germany]. Can one really objectively speak of liberation? Some claim, yes, the liberation began only on 9 November 1989 [the day East German officials opened the Berlin Wall].”

“We have decided for ourselves, in the self-representation of our state, that we want to see this as an act of liberation,” Baberowski observed critically. “The historian is the one who refutes the myth. We are not here to confirm a view of history by governments or societies. And then one would say: liberation, yes, for concentration camp inmates, yes. Not for Nazis, of which there were quite a few. There one would say, they were not liberated. Nor raped women.”

By citing cases of rape by Red Army soldiers, Baberowski sought to refute the “myth” that the Soviet army had liberated Europe from Nazi terror. This argument, and many others rolled out in the Phoenix broadcast, in the Bundestag and in the conservative Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, are the stock in trade of far-right circles. These same arguments are now being utilised to whitewash the crimes of German imperialism and prepare new wars.
