But, while Turkey fiddles, her NATO allies are still not happy. They seek an excuse to intevene and escalate the war in Syria. So, on Tuesday, Israel and France down a Russian military plane, killing 14 Russian personnel. It’s a provocation.–one of very many Syria has endured and quite a few Russia has, too. But Russia doesn’t take the bait. There’s nothing to gain by retaliation. The plan remains the same: liberation of Idlib will come. So Russia calls this provocation “accidental.” Wars are not won by losing one’s head every time the enemy provokes–even at a wanton and a criminal act, a war crime, such as the one perpetrated by France and Israel.

MOA—The demonstrations are similar to those staged in 2011-2013. Green-white-black French-colonial Syria flags and a few Turkish ones get waved -all new it seems- and a few dozens men and young boys, no women or girls in sight, chant some slogans. No black and white HTS/al-Qaeda flags visible and no weapons are in sight. The video shots are tightly controlled and concentrate on the civilian clothed men and children. Where a wider frame is shown one can see fighters in camouflage at the edge of the crowds. The intended message of these stunts: “Do you see us? There are only peaceful civilians in Idelb. No fighters are here. We are not terrorist. We only want freedom!”

ANDRE DAMON—Now, 17 years after September 11, 2001, Washington is preparing a major new war to protect fighters aligned with the very organization charged with carrying out the attack on the World Trade Center. This seemingly bewildering about-face expresses the real nature of the so-called “war on terror.” Leaving aside the unexplained circumstances surrounding the 9/11 attacks themselves, from its outset it was meant to dragoon public opinion behind wars of aggression long planned by Washington. The day after the 9/11 attacks, the World Socialist Web Site explained that “From the standpoint of the American government, the crusade against terrorism has been far more a campaign of propaganda to justify US military violence around the world than a conscientious effort to protect the American people.”

ERIC ZUESSE—If this peaceful path to ending the prelude to WW III — to avoiding the jump off a nuclear cliff — succeeds, then the world will be able to continue debating who was right and who was wrong in all of this. But, otherwise, that debate will simply be terminated by the war itself, and everyone will end up losing.
