The title of this analysis by Paul Craig Roberts (see excerpts below) sums up the key question defining the historical juncture in America today, as two wings of the equally corrupt US ruling establishment battle it out, one slightly less depraved than the other. For while a sizable section of working class America embraces Trump wrongly thinking him its champion, and legions of terminally and utterly indoctrinated stupid liberals cheerfully jump into bed with the CIA and the military to consummate a wedding in blood, the country drifts ever closer to the abyss. Meanwhile, in both the short-term and the middle-term, there's little question that those pushing Trump toward further hostilities and even war with Russia (or else!) are technically insane. Charitably put Trump does not have a surfeit of admirable qualities, but this much is true: he's the only one around on the top political tier of America who, for whatever reasons, remains stubbornly committed to the idea of normalising relations with Russia. Considering what a modern nuclear war would do to this tormented planet, and the moral decomposition of the US political class, that is obviously a good and sensible notion worthy of support, not hysterical denunciation as the CIA assets in the media and innumerable establishment minions are currently doing. Beggars can't be choosers, quite literally in this case. But none of this reasoning seems to penetrate the skulls of the Deep State handlers and their countless shills. Class imperatives I suppose. Have any of these idiots, presstitutes, and sociopaths ever thought through the implications of their single-minded pursuit of confrontation with Russia or any other nuclear power perceived as an obstacle to America's dream of uncontested world hegemony? The Democratic Party was totally corrupted by the Clinton Regime, and now it is totally insane. Leaders of the Democratic Party, such as Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer, my former co-author in the New York Times, have responded in a non-Democratic way to the first step President Trump has taken to reduce the extremely dangerous tensions with Russia that the Clinton, George W. Bush, and Obama regimes created between the two superpowers.

Yes, Russia is a superpower. Russian weapons are so superior to the junk produced by the waste-filled US military/security complex that lives high off the hog on the insouciant American taxpayer that it is questionable if the US is even a second class military power. If the insane neoconservatives, such as Max Boot, William Kristol, and the rest of the neocon scum get their way, the US, the UK, and Europe will be a radioactive ruin for thousands of years.

Pelosi: Making peace is a crime in her book.

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi (CA), Minority Leader of the US House of Representatives, declared that out of fear of some undefined retribution from Putin, a dossier on Trump perhaps, the President of the United States sold out the American people to Russia because he wants to make peace: “It begs the question, what does Vladimir Putin, what do the Russians have on Donald Trump—personally, politically and financially that he should behave in such a manner?” The “such a manner” Pelosi is speaking about is making peace instead of war.

To be clear, the Democratic Minority Leader of the US House of Representatives has accused Donald Trump of high treason against the United States. There is no outcry against this blatantly false accusation, totally devoid of evidence. The presstitute media instead of protesting this attempt at a coup against the President of the United States, trumpet the accusation as self-evident truth.Trump is a traitor because he wants peace with Russia.

Here is Democratic Both Trump and Putin ...can be assassinated, and that is what the statements from Pelosi, Schumer, McCain, Lindsey Graham, et. al., repeated endlessly in the propaganda ministry that is the Western press, encourages. Today, right now, at this moment, we are faced with a massive effort of the military/security complex, the neoconservatives, the Democratic Party, and the presstitute media to discredit the elected President of the United States and to overthrow him in order that the utterly corrupt elite that rule American can continue to hold on to power and to protect the massive budget of the military/security complex that, along with the Israel Lobby, funds the elections of those who rule us. Trump, like Reagan, was an exception, and it is the exceptions that accumulate the ire of the corrupt leftwing, bought off with money, and the ire of the media, concentrated into small tight ownership groups indebted to those who permitted the illegal concentration of a once independent and diverse American media that once served, on occasion, as a watchdog over government. The rightwing, wrapped in the flag, dismisses all truth as “anti-American.”

If Putin, Lavrov, the Russian government, the traitorous Russian Fifth Column—the Atlanticist Integrationists—the Chinese, the Iranians, the North Koreans think that any peace or consideration can come out of America, they are insane. Their delusions are setting themselves up for destruction. There is no institution in America, government or private, that can be trusted. Any government or person who trusts America or any Western country is stupid beyond belief.

The entire Russiagate hoax is an orchestration by the military/security complex, led by John Brennan, Comey, and Rosenstein. The purpose is to discredit President trump for two reasons. One is to prevent any normalization of relations with Russia. The other is to remove Trump’s agenda as an alternative to the agenda of the Democratic Party.

President Trump is almost powerless. Putin, the Chinese, the Iranians, and the North Koreans should recognize this before it is too late for them. President Trump cannot fire and arrest for high treason Mueller and Rosenstein. And Trump cannot indict Hillary for her numerous unquestionable crimes in plain view of everyone, or Comey or Brennan, who declares Trump “to be wholly in the pocket of Putin,” for trying to overthrow the elected president of the United States. Trump cannot have the Secret Service question the likes of Pelosi and Schumer and McCain and Lindsey Graham for false accusations that encourage assassination of the President of the United States.

Trump cannot even trust the Secret Service, which accumulated evidence suggests was complicit in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and Robert Kennedy.

If Putin and Lavrov, so anxious to be friends of Washington, let their guards down, they are history.

As I said above, Russiagate is an orchestratration to prevent peace between the US and Russia. Leading military/security complex experts, including the person who provided the CIA’s daily briefing of the President of the United States for many years, and the person who devised the spy program for the National Security Agency, have proven conclusively that Russiagate is a hoax designed for the purpose of preventing President Trump from normalizing relations between the US and Russia, which has the power to destroy the entirety of the Western World at will.

Keep in mind that no media informs you better than my website. If my website goes down, you will be left in darkness. No valid information comes from the US government or the Western presstitutes. Today there are no countries less free than the United States of America.

Why do the Russian Atlanticist Integrationists want to join an unfree Western world? Are they that brainwashed by Western Propaganda?

There is something wrong with Russian perception of Washington. A sampler of reactions to the summit. Except for those holding an obviously sane point of view, all the people you see below, journos, pundits, "security experts", former spooks, comedians, and so on are all guilty of complicity in inciting unnecessary war, a high crime that the Nuremberg tribunal regarded as a capital offense.

Note that Blitzer is not just interviewing Paul but browbeating him into accepting the national catechism of US foreign policy exceptionalism and the immaculate conception, virtue and honor of the CIA and other spook services.

Colbert says Trump's meeting with Putin should count as 'treason'

The below is obviously despicable, but par for the course for cynical careerist disinformer Stephen Colbert, prominent ner trumper and Democrat party celebrity, who parades around as some sort of funnyman. Look at the people he hails as heroes, CIA's James Clapper, John McCain, and so on, to great applause by his conditioned audience. While conveniently forgetting what this summit was all about. Connoisseurs of disinformation will have a ball with this one. Here's one of the most egregious pieces of news distortion on the summit, served up by CNN's Chris Cuomo, using as his sounding board Leon Panetta, an old establishment warhorse who naturally sees the world through the opposite side of the reality funnel. Literally everything he says, at Cuomo's frenzied urging, is a lie and a clear demonstration of the power of US exceptionalism, the emotional and intellectual cancer at the core of the American nation.

Below, this is what passes for journalism in America. Journos like Fox's Chris Wallace—at best mental and cultural mediocrities— secure an interview with a world historical figure like Putin and go on to boast about it for the rest of their lives, when all they did was put questions carefully scripted by their handlers, in this case with the highly likely assist of the most sordid channels of the US spook establishment. Notice that this media worm has the audacity to present Putin (surely a high point of courage in his book) with a copy of the Mueller bullshit indictment. What is truly amazing is that Putin manages to remain civil despite such thinly veiled provocations. Too bad the true drama here is lost on 95% of the American audience, as, thanks to the thick crust of exceptionalism covering their brains, they have no clues as to the context of anything happening before their eyes.

Over the last few articles, we looked at real life examples of how and why Intel for hire companies are dangerous. Companies staffed with people who have no loyalties or training are generating information that gets read at the highest levels of government. This includes the (PDB) President's Daily Briefing. The President of the US uses the Intelligence from the PDB to decide if American military forces are needed to intervene in the real world.

Ukrainian Intel providers are an example of this. It is a hybrid mix made up of private contractors for the most part. They are supplying tainted information to American NGOs and think-tanks. This information is making it into the US President's Daily Briefing.

Ukraine does this by supplying Intel to the Atlantic Council and pay to play analysts like Bellingcat Intel that is full of fabricated information or evidence. Ukrainian Intel handed off the fabrications to secondary sources like Bellingcat or the Atlantic Council. This way, Ukraine can be sure fake information is making its way to the Oval Office unchecked and unedited as shown in previous articles.

Uninformed opinions based on emotionally and politically charged analysis from faulty OSINT models. They use social media as a basis for their analysis. Unfortunately, this model replaced a lot of the real Intel US agencies used to provide for decision makers. This Intel model only serves the private companies that provide it and their customers outside of government.

Based on fabricated results, Ukrainian Intel operatives are working hard to con the US Congress into supplying them with money. They use this money to attack media that doesn't support Ukraine's right to violence against its people. Increasingly they use it to promote fascist policies destroying the safety net Ukrainians had in health care, child care, and retirement.

Ukrainian Intel does this through attacks on media groups. Their goal is to force a conflict between the US and Russia to happen. From 2014 onward, they have repeatedly stated this was their only goal and America owed them that much.

The 3-sentence summary looks like this. The Ukrainian Intel and espionage units CyberHunta and Ukraine's Cyber Alliance- aka Fancy Bear don't respect treaties, accords, or peace agreements their own country signs. The unit was also comprised of Russian FSB and GRU traitors and is still staffed by Ukrainian hackers, Information Operation units, and hit-for-hire units developed in conjunction with Myrotvorets (PeaceMaker). They are overseen by a Diaspora handler that gets them tools, political support, and money from the US and Canada.

The spy, sabotage, information operations, and hit squads are functioning in Ukraine and claim the authority to work anywhere in the world including inside the USA. In fact, they have been working illicit information operations in the US since 2014.

Let's take three avenues of approach to look into this. Given that most of the Ukrainian hacking, espionage, hit-for-hire, and information operation groups money and direction is provably coming from the Ukrainian Diaspora in the US and Canada, we need to ask:

Why is this happening? How is this happening? Who is responsible for putting this together?

Was there a single event that changed the course of the war in Donbass for the Ukrainian Congressional Committee of America (UCCA) and the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) and made it personal?

We are going to show the Ukrainian Diaspora reaction to what it considers a cataclysmic event followed by planned and executed strategy to destroy Russia's credibility, wealth, image, and to threaten its existence. In doing so they willfully risked American Democracy and world peace.

Push every non sequitur event that happened in late 2013 through mid-2014 aside. This includes Crimea seceding. All of it was planned, staged, and pushed into being by the Ukrainian Diaspora and executed by Trizub-Banderi (Dimitri Yarosh) and other nationalist forces.

The nationalists knew Crimea needed little pressure to get pushed over the edge and act the way it eventually did. They used the same threats of violence the nationalist planners used in the early and mid 90's putdown of the Crimean referendums. This was where Dimitry Yarosh cut his teeth while coming up through the ranks in nationalist Ukrainian groups. At the time he was part of the enforcer muscle that was going to murder Crimean leaders that didn't comply with Ukrainian nationalist demands.

In 2014 they started delivering on the threats of serious violence they made in the early 90s. Making sure the peninsula left Ukraine raised the stakes radically. They could say Russia attacked, Russia annexed, Russian soldiers are fighting. They needed this while they pushed the US to get involved with what would have been a regional conflagration and could have tipped into WWIII.

From April 2014- "In 1994, one such paper actually foresaw a scenario in which Ukraine would deliberately make Russia belligerent enough to attack Ukraine. This scenario is strikingly predictive of what we are seeing in 2014 as a result of Euro-Maidan."

"Although the possibility of war is not as far-fetched as one would like it to be, it would not work to Ukraine's disadvantage. Indeed, the emergence of a genuinely hostile Russia would translate into Ukraine's rapid integration into European economic and security structures and its concomitant transformation into a client state of the United States. As an East European version of South Korea, Ukraine would become the recipient of large-scale Western--in particular, American--military and economic assistance that would guarantee its stability, if not its prosperity.... Russia's aggressiveness, therefore, could be Ukraine's salvation . " [See Alexander J. Motyl, "Will Ukraine Survive 1994?" in the Harriman Institute Forum, Vol. 7, No. 5 (January 1994), p. 4.]

One way of succeeding was for Ukraine to never fix real borders with Russia and set up a real dispute with Russia over sovereignty issues. It doesn't have borders with Belarus either and has disputes pending as to where the border is.

As you can see, Crimea wasn't quite the problem child it was made out to be. Through midsummer, Ukrainian nationalists were sure Ukraine would win based on Nationalist slogans and large numbers of conscripted forces. They didn't care about the losses. The catalyst happened toward the end of summer.

On August 19th, 2014 a second generation OUNb (Bandera) Diaspora leader from the family of Mikola Lebed was killed. Lebed's family are still top leaders of OUNb in the US. Mark Paslawsky died at Illovaisk while fighting for Semen Sementchenko's Donbass battalion in the Ukrainian civil war.

For Paslawsky's generation in the Diaspora, this was as close as they could get to the feeling the assassination of Stepan Bandera had on their parent's generation. Paslawsky was OUNb royalty(Ukrainian nationalist) and he was fighting in Ukraine for post-Maidan pro Bandera Ukraine. He became the new rally point for Ukrainian nationalism worldwide.

Ironically, one of the last statements the Ukrainian nationalist Diaspora icon made about the war in Donbass was that Russia was not fighting it.

“The second reason I mention Paslawsky is that he was, after all, a Ukrainian American. In killing him—and make no mistake about it: Putin killed him—Putin has taken on, in addition to the entire world, the Ukrainian American Diaspora. He probably thinks it’s a joke. But in killing a Ukrainian American, he’s made the war in Ukraine personal for Ukrainian Americans. Their intellectual, material, and political resources are far greater than Putin can imagine. Be forewarned, Vlad: diasporas have long memories. And this one will give you and your apologists in Russia and the West no rest.” Alexander Moytl -World Affairs Journal

Nationalist Ukraine has such strong political supporting because of Nationalist Ukrainian Americans in Congress. They are committed to support Ukraine regardless of how bald-faced the lie Ukrainians tell. Senators and Congressmen like Marcy Kaptur support them because of latent nationalist politics or to get big campaign donations.

In a speech on C-Span, Kaptur stated openly that Europe and America owed a moral debt to the Ukrainians that stood against the Soviet Union in WWII. She just didn't say the Ukrainians in question were rabid Nazis and Waffen SS during the war. Noted in that article, Kaptur went on the record eulogizing ISIS leaders that were Ukrainian and died in Ukraine.

In the early spring of 2014, Ukraine was trying to hire a cyber unit. One of the interviews went to Joel Harding who later stated at this point Ukrainians were more interested in online trolling than information operations. Even so, he was involved with their program from the beginning. For all intensive purposes, it looks like the rewrite of the Odessa massacre is probably the first time he was able to show Ukraine what he really does.

I wrote a couple early in-depth pieces in English about the massacre in Odessa. The death toll has never been reconciled to the actual body count including people unlucky enough to be walking by when it erupted.

From there, I didn't notice anything as dramatic until after New Year's 2015. In Feb. 2015 I found the person Ukraine hired to write their information policy the actions of the Ukrainian Information Ministry are built on.

Everyone familiar with injustice in Ukraine is familiar with the Information Ministry's creation- Myrovorets or PeaceMaker website. It became famous in the spring of 2015 for the murder of Oleg Buzina. In follow-up articles throughout 2015 and 2016, I showed how and why offshoot groups would be formed labeling people Russian trolls, terrorists, traitors across media.

Who is Joel Harding?

[dropcap]B[/dropcap]efore joining SAIC in the mid-nineties, he was the Joint Staff J2 liaison for IO to the CIA, DIA, NSA, DISA and other assorted agencies in the Washington DC area.

When you look at the beginning of the NSA’s intrusive policies you find Joel Harding. Harding helped pioneer the invasive software used by government and business to explore your social networks, influence you, and dig out every personal detail. Harding has been hard at work making sure Ukrainian Intel has all the latest tools to work with so Ukraine can do the same.

Sit down and watch the movie "A Good American" and then ask Bill Binney if Harding's name ever came up as one of the SAIC leaders who came into the NSA and destroyed any right to privacy in America and the world with Trailblazer.

Over the last few years, I've recorded some of what Harding has been involved with in Ukraine including his cattle calls for criminal action. Joel Harding is responsible for the murders Myrotvorets and Ukraine's other units commit because of his policy.

Today, Harding has positioned himself as one of the people that will recommend and eventually help decide what is legal and acceptable behavior for people doing the work he does today. To paraphrase Harding; If it's illegal and we want to do something, lawyers are there to rewrite the laws and get them changed fast. After the laws are changed so our actions are legal, our actions can be certified legal and our commitment to Democracy is upheld and validated.

In June 2016, Joel Harding shed light on how Ukraine hires the talent it is using to shape the western media landscape. This one event showed who is doing the hiring for Poroshenko's Ukraine. He introduced us to the handler going between Ukraine, the US State Department, and the Ukrainian Diaspora.

Her name is Christina Dobrovolska, Kristina Dobrovolska, or Krystyna Dobrovolskya, etc. The change in spelling depending on where her name is used keeps her and people like her under the radar.

Harding met with Christina in Washington DC in June 2016 to help secure a contract for writing that years Ukraine Ministry of Information Policy (MIP). Krystyna V. Dobrovolska was assigned by the U.S. Embassy in Kiev as a government liaison and translator to escort 4 Ukrainian Rada delegates from Kyiv during their visits to Albany and Washington.

While in Washington on what the Ukrainian Weekly described as a packed schedule and whirlwind tour, they made time to meet Joel Harding and accept his proposal for the 2016 MIP. Harding donated the MIP because he wanted to use it as an example for all of Europe to see what a "whole country" Information policy could do for them. In this way, he could drive up business at the state level.

What you see in Ukraine's media landscape is a direct result of Harding's efforts. His "whole country" effort puts all media in a country on the same track spouting the same narrative. He's succeeding with this across Europe with his Disinformation Review from East Stratcom. The publication is being sued.

Read the following carefully and the origin of the non-Russian-Russian troll becomes clear. Every word that does not agree with his client's position became the enemies position. You are Ukraine or you are Russia.

After meeting with Joel Harding, Christina Dobrovolska escorted the Ukrainian MPs to Albany and then the "Ukrainian-American Cultural Center hosted a dinner for the visiting delegation and host families on Friday evening, followed by a community meet-and-greet event at the Ukrainian-American Citizens Club, also located in Watervliet, NY."

It seems that the Ukrainian-American Citizens Club is owned by the Ukrainian-American OUNb nationalist Diaspora leader making the big hiring decision for Ukraine. He is none other than Nestor Paslawsky, nephew of Ukrainian nationalist icon Mikola Lebed and brother of Ukrainian nationalist icon Mark Paslawsky who was killed in the Ukrainian civil war (shown above) during the retreat at Illovaisk in 2014. When Alexander Moytl threatened Russia on behalf of the Ukrainian-American Diaspora, the OUNb leader Nestor Paslawsky was who he had in mind.

According to Joel Harding, he and Christina have worked together for years.

Who is Christina Dobrovolska?

Before 2014, Kristina Dobrovolska billed herself as a trilingual senior software marketing manager with international experience. She is a project and remote teams manager with big project experience. After the 2014 coup in Ukraine, she started working with Ukraine's Information Ministry with its cyber warfare, information operations, and hacking teams.

Today, she is the manager responsible for the Surkov leaks, providing information for events during the Ukrainian civil war including Bellingcat Buk and personnel identifications for MH17. She is the manager providing Bellingcat with its information about the Syrian conflict including proofs of whom is responsible for the gas attacks. Her group is also helping to develop the white helmets story.

As a Ukrainian Information Ministry project manager, she bears responsibility for the Myrovorets website. This site puts people on kill lists and displays all their personal information which is responsible for murder for hire units like those that killed journalists Oleh Buzina. Today, her hacking, spy, InfoOps, Intel, and propaganda units work side-by-side with the murder site.

Ukraine's Internet Army which along with Myrotvorets are the first products of his 2015 Ukrainian MIP boasted 40,000 Diaspora volunteer trolls to scour articles and try to destroy journalists that disagreed with Ukraine's position.

The Great War (WW1) left deep scars on the European psyche, but not deep enough to prevent a more ferocious return of the scourge in 1939, this one costing 55 million instead of a mere 35 million lives.

[dropcap]I[/dropcap]n America they build flying war robots, but you can’t drink the water. America is where the empire keeps its billionaires and bombs.

Giant wars left Europe a mess many years ago, so America rose to the top. Now it’s where many rich and powerful influencers centralize their operations. America is the cattle prod used to compel the world to march along with the interests of western aristocrats. Governments which comply are rewarded with military “protection”, while noncompliant governments are sanctioned and bombed. The Mafia does this also.

Americans are kept poor by the aristocracy, because money equals power and power is relative. The poorer ordinary Americans are kept, the more powerful the aristocrats are. Agencies like the FBI were invented so that there will be someone to help shoot and kill ordinary Americans if they ever decide to start eating the aristocrats for food.

It is very important that the aristocrats be able to control America, because they need to be able to protect their assets while directing its military firepower. This means keeping ordinary Americans poor and politically impotent while conducting trillion-dollar military operations overseas, which is a hard sell. The aristocrats engage that hard sell on a daily basis using the mass media corporations which they own. And they do so successfully.

Americans are surrounded by screens which promote capitalism and consumerism for eight-minute stretches between commercial breaks promoting capitalism and consumerism. If you ever get a bit uncomfortable about the expensive planes dropping expensive bombs on people who make less money in their lifetimes than the military explosives used to kill them, just turn on any of the screens you own and there will be a talking head ready to explain to you why you’re just imagining silly things in that ditzy little head of yours. Relax. Don’t worry. Uncle Sam has got everything under control. Uncle Sam loves you. Uncle Sam knows what’s best.

America is too important to be left in the hands of the Americans. If you ever wonder why America is behaving in a strange way, that is always the explanation: America is too important to be left in the hands of the Americans. The intelligence agencies, military firepower and massive economic influence that is wielded by anyone who exerts control over the US government are such valuable tools that there’s no limit to the horrible things that aristocratic manipulators will do to secure it. This includes pummeling ordinary Americans with mass media psyops day in and day out to manufacture their consent for agendas which do not benefit them. While this is an effective way to control how Americans think and vote, it also makes them more than a little crazy.

This is why there is an opiate epidemic in America. This is why white supremacy is becoming more brazen. This is why every few weeks an American grabs a gun and kills as many of his countrymen as possible. Because of their nation’s strategic significance, Americans are the most aggressively propagandized people in the tight alliance of nations that comprises the western empire. But there’s only so far you can twist a mind away from truth before it snaps. There’s only so much you can do to convince a populace that mass murder is perfectly fine overseas before someone gets the idea that it’s perfectly fine at home, too.

Americans are in their nature as compassionate and generous a people as you will ever meet anywhere else on earth; they’ve just got manipulative sociopaths elbows-deep in their minds conducting psyops all the time, and it makes them a bit weird. But their good-naturedness is evident in the fact that even the propaganda used to manipulate them into consenting to depraved war agendas is always meant to exploit their caring and compassion: it’s always about saving children from a monstrous dictator, or spreading freedom and democracy. Americans are blasted in the face with so many hero narratives from Hollywood and television that this makes perfect sense to them, and of course they want their military to do something heroic and save those poor kids. Even the sick things they consent to are rooted in basic good intentions. America is a country full of decent people with propaganda boxes around their brains.

Propaganda is what makes America America. Without the endless aristocratic influence campaigns convincing Americans that economic injustice is economic justice, that war is humanitarian, that insanity is sanity, and that their government is acting with their best interests at heart, the nation would be unrecognizable. America is a psyop wearing a cowboy hat.

Vast, sprawling aristocratic kingdoms have been built upon the manipulation of the American psyche. If those brain boxes ever get shucked off, those kingdoms will necessarily collapse, and a new world will emerge. Because those brain boxes are made of lies and manipulation, the new world which emerges will necessarily be better and healthier. Health and harmony are born of truth.

It is not okay that the aristocracy keeps warping and brutalizing the American psyche. It is not okay that they use their power and influence to advance inequality and war. Americans need only to turn around and face their manipulators and tormenters for this all to end. Once you’ve seen the puppeteer, the puppet show is ruined.

Keep pointing at those strings, oh clear-eyed rebels. This fight is very winnable. The spells holding the deception together can be broken. America belongs in the hands of the Americans. Americans can take America.

American Exceptionalism is a religion, albeit a very toxic religion.

Lee Camp's excellent summary goes to the core of our national predicament. Why do we keep spending such ludicrous amounts of money for threats that do not exist or that we are actually creating?

The reason is simple: weapons manufacturing is the most profitable industry in the country, obscenely so, but it requires a permanent "threat"—a credible bugaboo, a feared enemy— to keep the money flowing "for defense".

Wars and permanent preparations for war provide that framework. US capitalism saturated consumer purchasing power in the 1930s. Since then only consumer credit (private indebtedness) and war expenditures—" Keyneysian militarism"— have kept the country afloat. Of course, admitting this would represent not only the liquidation of these rich cliques who have made billions at the public trough, and gained enormous political power, but also admit that capitalism itself is unsustainable under normal circumstances. Not to mention that throwing a lot of people out of rather well paid jobs is not a palatable prospect for any politician. "Defense industries" having grown to such absurd levels, they have created, like "banks too big to fail", their own rationale to be maintained at any cost.

So there. Only radical restructuring can fix this dangerous nonsense. And due to endemic corruption, there's no leadership for such a political crusade. —PG

As a former soldier, let me fill you in as to what "value" all that money buys. -40,000 dollar night vision scopes the size of a small fireplace log (that is supposed to go on top of the rifle) that can be out performed by civilian available models for under a few thousand bucks. -Software programs so buggy they cant go more than a few minutes without crashing. -Weapon development programs that have been going on since Vietnam to replace the mainstay M16/A4 that have produced dozens of rifle designs from around the world that succeed in outperforming the M16, but get shot down because some old twat generals cant fathom how "port arms" would look like in dress uniform with them, OR more importantly the ammunition manufacturer might have to switch and we cant have that. - the list goes on... Starting to get the idea about military spending? All that money spent is even more ridiculous when you understand the quality they get for what they spend. Also, some of you out there will remember when we still had real journalism, where they did huge segments on overspending such as the infamous 400 dollar screwdrivers and thousand dollar toilet seats. Those were stories from the mid 80s, that problem never went away, just imagine how bad that problem is now? If there where real accountability in military funding and spending, we could pay for free college, medicare for all, fix our infrastructure, AND still have enough for proper defense. By defense I mean defense, not the savaging of small countries for corporations to steal resources. The next time you see a TV show or news program where someone refers to weapons or tech as "military grade", feel free to laugh your ass off.

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he NATO summit is opening today in Brussels amid unprecedented tensions between Washington and the European Union (EU). A month after the collapse of the G7 summit on June 10, as EU leaders criticized US President Donald Trump’s trade war measures against the EU, Canada, Mexico and China, divisions are again erupting as the NATO powers try to coordinate the vast military buildup they are launching.

Conflicts broke out even before the NATO heads of state reached Brussels, after Trump repeatedly berated the EU powers, especially Germany, in recent days for not spending enough on the army.

Trump, who will travel on from Brussels to Britain and Finland, where he meets Russian President Vladimir Putin, again attacked the EU as he left Washington. Complaining of the intractable problems involved in his European tour with the NATO summit and the government crisis in Britain, Trump told the press: “I have NATO. I have the UK, which is somewhat in turmoil. And I have Putin. Frankly, Putin may be the easiest of them all. Who would think?”

The American president made clear that he did not necessarily see his nominal European allies as preferable to Russia or China, whom Washington has both at times threatened with military action. While he said that “getting along” with Russia and China is “a good thing” and declined to call Putin a “foe,” instead calling him a “competitor,” he took a different tack towards Europe. “We’re being taken advantage of by the European Union,” Trump said, adding that US spending on NATO “helps them a lot more than it helps us.”

After an EU-NATO meeting yesterday, EU Council President Donald Tusk snapped back at Trump in front of a visibly nervous NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg.

Tusk said, “Speaking on the eve of the NATO summit here in Brussels, I would like to address President Trump directly, who for a long time now has been criticizing Europe almost daily for, in his view, insufficient contributions to the common defense capabilities, and for living off the US. Dear President Trump: America does not have, and will not have a better ally than Europe. Today Europeans spend on defense many times more than Russia, and as much as China.” He pointedly added, “Appreciate your allies. You don’t have many, after all.”

Calling EU military spending “an investment in common American and European defense and security,” Tusk boasted of Europe’s role in the bloody, US-led NATO occupation of Afghanistan. He concluded, “Dear Mr. President, please remember this tomorrow, when we meet at the NATO summit, but above all when you meet President Putin in Helsinki. It is always worth knowing: who is your strategic friend? And who is your strategic problem?”

As Washington and the EU launch a trade war with tariffs on tens of billions of dollars of each other’s goods, the basic framework of relations between the world’s most powerful imperialist blocs is collapsing. NATO was a Euro-American military alliance founded after World War II, in 1949, and directed above all against the Soviet Union. But NATO is being torn apart as world capitalism heads towards another global war.

The NATO corpse keeps trying to inflame a war with Russia, or keep itself relevant and worthy of billions wasted every year.

The conflicts inside NATO are not due to a lack of EU military spending. In fact, despite US complaints about EU defense spending that began under Obama, virtually the only thing the NATO imperialists agree on is that hundreds of billions of dollars and euros should be looted from workers and from basic social programs in order to beef up the war machines. In this, they intend to call for stepped-up military spending to play a major role.

Germany, France, Spain and even Belgium have all pledged this year to increase military spending by tens of billions of euros. In a national address on Monday, French President Emmanuel Macron again called for France to return to the draft, based on deep cuts to basic social programs. Also this year, Sweden has begun conscription of a portion of youth born in 1999.

It is ever clearer that far broader conflicts than a budgetary dispute are at stake in the spats inside NATO. Trump’s denunciations during his election campaign of NATO as “obsolete,” and of German auto exports to the United States as “bad,” were not a product of his personal hotheadedness. Amid the continuing, long-term economic decline of US imperialism, it was an expression of a bitter inter-imperialist struggle over the division of markets, profits and strategic advantage, which has now escalated into a developing trade war and the public divisions inside NATO.

These conflicts, well known to the Marxists of the early 20th century, twice exploded into world war. Indeed, analyzing the inevitability of economic and military conflict under capitalism in his classic work Imperialism, written in 1916 during World War I, Lenin concisely summed up the essential issues posed to workers by inter-imperialist alliances like NATO. “Peaceful alliances prepare the ground for wars,” he warned, “and in their turn grow out of wars.”

Having grown out of World War II, NATO’s different competing factions are all preparing in various ways the ground for a new, global conflict. None of these factions have anything to offer to the working class. The question posed to workers around the world, now as at the time of the Russian Revolution of October 1917, is the struggle against wars rooted in the structure of international capitalism itself.

Significant sections of the ruling class on both sides of the Atlantic still aim to hold NATO together, based, however, on drastic attacks on the working class and a war drive against Russia. NATO’s reckless expansion into Eastern Europe is continuing. Visiting Latvia yesterday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Canadian troops would remain in Latvia, on Russia’s borders, for four years after their mandate stops in 2019.

In his press conference yesterday previewing the Brussels summit, Stoltenberg praised Saudi talks with the Taliban in Afghanistan and discussed plans to integrate the former Soviet republics of Georgia and Ukraine into NATO. This reckless move has vast implications. It poses the threat that if far-right Georgian or Ukrainian regimes start wars with Russia or attack Russian borders—as they did in 2008 and 2014, respectively—all of NATO could find itself obligated by treaty to go to war with Russia, a nuclear-armed power, to defend them.

At the same time, other sections of the ruling class, going far beyond Trump, are pursuing a more confrontational policy towards US-EU relations. On Monday, just before the NATO summit began, German Chancellor Angela Merkel met with Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang, amid growing criticisms of Trump’s tariffs against both EU and Chinese goods. Despite growing EU-China tensions and threats of EU trade sanctions against Chinese metal exports, Beijing and Berlin united in making overt criticisms of US trade war measures.

Chinese ambassador to the EU Zhang Ming told German financial daily Handelsblatt, “China has tried extensively to stop the trade conflict with the United States escalating into a trade war but it takes two hands to clap. … The Chinese are peaceful people and I think the Europeans as well, but we must demonstrate to the trade war’s initiator that its action is wrong.”

Garima Mohan of the Global Public Policy Institute in Berlin told the South China Morning Post that the US-German trade conflict is “an opportunity for China and Germany to band together” against Washington, though he warned that Sino-German cooperation would be “tenuous” and fragile.

These intractable divisions will underlie the tensions that, it seems safe to say, will likely erupt in the coming days at the NATO summit.
