Exposing the myth of the Holodomor, an alleged Soviet famine in Ukraine from 1932 to 1933. During today's episode, we debunk claims that Stalin and the Soviet Union purposefully starved millions of Ukrainians. We shed light on the role of Ukrainian Nazi collaborators in spreading the mythology of the Holodomor. We also discuss how fraudulent historical events like the Holodomor influence imperialist propaganda today. Today's guest is Dr. Grover Furr, an author and professor of Medieval English literature at Montclair State University. Dr. Furr has published numerous books debunking imperialist lies about Stalin and the Soviet Union. These include "Blood Lies: The Evidence that Every Accusation against Joseph Stalin and the Soviet Union in Timothy Snyder's Bloodlands Is False," "Leon Trotsky's Collaboration with Germany and Japan," and "The Murder of Sergei Kirov: History, Scholarship and the Anti-Stalin Paradigm," among other books.

The Fraudulence of American ‘Defense’

CAPITALISM INEVITABLY SPAWNS IMPERIALISM

By Eric Zuesse
CROSSPOSTED WITH THE DURAN

oe Biden organized Senate Democrats to vote to support George W. Bush’s invasion of Iraq on 20 March 2003, which did nothing for the defense of America, because Iraq never threatened America. The excuses that George W. Bush had given for America’s ‘need’ to attack Iraq were lies, which, even at that time, were demonstrably lies, though the U.S.-and-allied ‘news’-media hid their blatant falseness, in order to fool the U.S. public to support the invasion, which, up till now, has cost the U.S. Government $5 trillion.

The 2009 Nobel Peace Prize winner Barack Obama led the U.S. to bomb and destroy Libya in 2011, though Libya likewise never had endangered U.S. national security; and, then, starting right after Obama’s 2012 re-election, he began trying to overthrow and replace the Government of Syria, which likewise never endangered America but created an international war there; and, starting in 2013, he organized the February 2014 coup that overthrew and replaced the Government of Ukraine and thereby started the war in Ukraine that Putin finally responded to on 24 February 2022 by invading Ukraine.

Here is how extraordinarily profitable the 100 top sellers to the Pentagon are in comparison to all other U.S. corporations: whereas cumulative returns to all U.S. stocks during 1990-2015 were a thousand percent, cumulative returns to only U.S. ‘Defense’ stocks were 4,500%. Though the invasion of Iraq on 20 March 2003 cost the U.S. Government $5T+, it was enormously profitable to those corporations and to the international extraction-corporations such as ExxonMobil that depend upon them.

On October 17th, the anonymous German military person who blogs as “Moon of Alabama” and who is among the most reliable of all public commentators on military matters, headlined “U.S. Deploys Large Force - Eyes On Syria”, and he said that Joe Biden is using the excuse of the October 7th breakout of Hamas fighters from the West Bank on October 7th in order to prepare an invasion of Syria and maybe also Lebanon.

The U.S. has recently moved way too many troops to the Middle East to be of peaceful purpose or to simply deter others from action.
Who does it intend to fight?

Arms Airlift to Israel, Bombers in Jordan, Two Carriers: U.S. Deploying More Forces to Mideast - Haaretz

Last week, the United States deployed the aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford and its strike group to the eastern Mediterranean. The USS Ford carries about 80 combat aircraft, electronic warfare and intelligence planes. It is accompanied by five advanced missile-guided ships, armed with Tomahawk cruise missiles capable of hitting targets inside Iran. According to satellite images, the USS Ford is about 180 kilometers south-west of Cyprus. P-8 maritime reconnaissance aircraft with anti-submarine, anti-ship capabilities are patrolling around the group.
...
Over the weekend, a second carrier strike group, led by the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, was dispatched to the Eastern Mediterranean and is due to arrive later this month.

Each carrier strike group also includes one or two submarines. Next to various support planes each carrier has a 'wing' of fighter planes consisting of four squadrons with 12 fighter jets each.

America spends half of the entire world’s military expenditures. It’s very profitable for the people who control the U.S. Government and press and ‘Defense’ contractors and extraction corporations.

It’s not the U.S. Defense Department; it is the U.S. Aggression Department.

The geopolitics of Al-Aqsa Flood

Please make sure these dispatches reach as many readers as possible. Share with kin, friends and workmates and ask them to do likewise.

Pepe Escobar

Hamas’ Operation Al-Aqsa Flood was meticulously planned. The launch date was conditioned by two triggering factors.

First was Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu flaunting his 'New Middle East' map at the UN General Assembly in September, in which he completely erased Palestine and made a mockery of every single UN resolution on the subject.

Second are the serial provocations at the holy Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, including the straw that broke the camel’s back: two days before Al-Aqsa Flood, on 5 October, at least 800 Israeli settlers launched an assault around the mosque, beating pilgrims, destroying Palestinian shops, all under the observation of Israeli security forces.

Everyone with a functioning brain knows Al-Aqsa is a definitive red line, not just for Palestinians, but for the entire Arab and Muslim worlds.

It gets worse. The Israelis have now invoked the rhetoric of a “Pearl Harbor.” This is as threatening as it gets. The original Pearl Harbor was the American excuse to enter a world war and nuke Japan, and this “Pearl Harbor” may be Tel Aviv’s justification to launch a Gaza genocide.

Sections of the west applauding the upcoming ethnic cleansing – including Zionists posing as “analysts” saying out loud that the “population transfers” that began in 1948 “must be completed” – believe that with massive weaponry and massive media coverage, they can turn things around in short shrift, annihilate the Palestinian resistance, and leave Hamas allies like Hezbollah and Iran weakened.

Their Ukraine Project has sputtered, leaving not just egg on powerful faces, but entire European economies in ruin. Yet as one door closes, another one opens: Jump from ally Ukraine to ally Israel, and hone your sights on adversary Iran instead of adversary Russia.

Incompetence. Willful strategy. Or both.

That brings us to the cost of launching this new “war on terror.” The propaganda is in full swing. For Netanyahu in Tel Aviv, Hamas is ISIS. For Volodymyr Zelensky in Kiev, Hamas is Russia. Over one October weekend, the war in Ukraine was completely forgotten by western mainstream media. Brandenburg Gate, the Eiffel tower, the Brazilian Senate are all Israeli now.

Egyptian intel claims it warned Tel Aviv about an imminent attack from Hamas. The Israelis chose to ignore it, as they did the Hamas training drills they observed in the weeks prior, smug in their superior knowledge that Palestinians would never have the audacity to launch a liberation operation.

Whatever happens next, Al-Aqsa Flood has already, irretrievably, shattered the hefty pop mythology around the invincibility of Tsahal, Mossad, Shin Bet, Merkava tank, Iron Dome, and the Israel Defense Forces.

Even as it ditched electronic communications, Hamas profited from the glaring collapse of Israel’s multi-billion-dollar electronic systems monitoring the most surveilled border on the planet.

Cheap Palestinian drones hit multiple sensor towers, facilitated the advance of a paragliding infantry, and cleared the way for T-shirted, AK-47-wielding assault teams to inflict breaks in the wall and cross a border that even stray cats dared not.

Israel, inevitably, turned to battering the Gaza Strip, an encircled cage of 365 square kilometers packed with 2.3 million people. The indiscriminate bombing of refugee camps, schools, civilian apartment blocks, mosques, and slums has begun. Palestinians have no navy, no air force, no artillery units, no armored fighting vehicles, and no professional army. They have little to no high-tech surveillance access, while Israel can call up NATO data if they want it.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant proclaimed “a complete siege on the Gaza Strip. There will be no electricity, no food, no fuel, everything is closed. We are fighting human animals and we will act accordingly.”

The Israelis can merrily engage in collective punishment because, with three guaranteed UNSC vetoes in their back pocket, they know they can get away with it.

It doesn’t matter that Haaretz, Israel’s most respected newspaper, straight out concedes that “actually the Israeli government is solely responsible for what happened (Al-Aqsa Flood) for denying the rights of Palestinians.”

The Israelis are nothing if not consistent. Back in 2007, then-Israeli Defense Intelligence Chief Amos Yadlin said, Israel would be happy if Hamas took over Gaza because IDF could then deal with Gaza as a hostile state.”

Ukraine funnels weapons to Palestinians

Only one year ago, the sweaty sweatshirt comedian in Kiev was talking about turning Ukraine into a big Israel,” and was duly applauded by a bunch of Atlantic Council bots.

Well, it turned out quite differently. As an old-school Deep State source just informed me:

“Ukraine-earmarked weapons are ending up in the hands of the Palestinians. The question is which country is paying for it. Iran just made a deal with the US for six billion dollars and it is unlikely Iran would jeopardize that. I have a source who gave me the name of the country but I cannot reveal it. The fact is that Ukrainian weapons are going to the Gaza Strip and they are being paid for but not by Iran."

After its stunning raid last weekend, a savvy Hamas has already secured more negotiating leverage than Palestinians have wielded in decades. Significantly, while peace talks are supported by China, Russia, Turkiye, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt - Tel Aviv refuses. Netanyahu is obsessed with razing Gaza to the ground, but if that happens, a wider regional war is nearly inevitable.

Lebanon’s Hezbollah – a staunch Resistance Axis ally of the Palestinian resistance - would rather not be dragged into a war that can be devastating on its side of the border, but that could change if Israel perpetrates a de facto Gaza genocide.

Hezbollah holds at least 100,000 ballistic missiles and rockets, from Katyusha (range: 40 km) to Fajr-5 (75 km), Khaibar-1 (100 km), Zelzal 2 (210 km), Fateh-110 (300 km), and Scud B-C (500 km). Tel Aviv knows what that means, and shudders at the frequent warnings by Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah that its next war with Israel will be conducted inside that country.

Which brings us to Iran.

Geopolitical plausible deniability

The key immediate consequence of Al-Aqsa Flood is that the Washington neocon wet dream of “normalization” between Israel and the Arab world will simply vanish if this turns into a Long War.

Large swathes of the Arab world in fact are already normalizing their ties with Tehran – and not only inside the newly expanded BRICS 11.

In the drive towards a multipolar world, represented by BRICS 11, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), and China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), among other groundbreaking Eurasian and Global South institutions, there’s simply no place for an ethnocentric Apartheid state fond of collective punishment.

Just this year, Israel found itself disinvited from the African Union summit. An Israeli delegation showed up anyway, and was unceremoniously ejected from the big hall, a visual that went viral. At the UN plenary sessions last month, a lone Israeli diplomat sought to disrupt Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi’s speech. No western ally stood by his side, and he too, was ejected from the premises.

As Chinese President Xi Jinping diplomatically put it in December 2022, Beijing “firmly supports the establishment of an independent state of Palestine that enjoys full sovereignty based on 1967 borders and with East Jerusalem as its capital. China supports Palestine in becoming a full member of the United Nations.”

Tehran’s strategy is way more ambitious – offering strategic advice to West Asian resistance movements from the Levant to the Persian Gulf: Hezbollah, Ansarallah, Hashd al-Shaabi, Kataib Hezbollah, Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and countless others. It’s as if they are all part of a new Grand Chessboard de facto supervised by Grandmaster Iran.

The pieces in the chessboard were carefully positioned by none other than the late Quds Force Commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps General Qassem Soleimani, a once-in-a-lifetime military genius. He was instrumental in creating the foundations for the cumulative successes of Iranian allies in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Yemen, and Palestine, as well as creating the conditions for a complex operation such as Al-Aqsa Flood.

Elsewhere in the region, the Atlanticist drive of opening strategic corridors across the Five Seas - the Caspian, the Black Sea, the Red Sea, the Persian Gulf, and the Eastern Mediterranean - is floundering badly.

Russia and Iran are already smashing US designs in the Caspian – via the International North-South Transportation Corridor (INSTC) – and the Black Sea, which is on the way to becoming a Russian lake. Tehran is paying very close attention to Moscow’s strategy in Ukraine, even as it refines its own strategy on how to debilitate the Hegemon without direct involvement: call it geopolitical plausible deniability.

Bye bye EU-Israel-Saudi-India corridor

The Russia-China-Iran alliance has been demonized as the new “axis of evil” by western neocons. That infantile rage betrays cosmic impotence. These are Real Sovereigns that can’t be messed with, and if they are, the price to pay is unthinkable.

A key example: if Iran under attack by a US-Israeli axis decided to block the Strait of Hormuz, the global energy crisis would skyrocket, and the collapse of the western economy under the weight of quadrillions of derivatives would be inevitable.

What this means, in the immediate future, is that he American Dream of interfering across the Five Seas does not even qualify as a mirage. Al-Aqsa Flood has also just buried the recently-announced and much-ballyhooed EU-Israel-Saudi Arabia-India transportation corridor.

China is keenly aware of all this incandescence taking place only a week before its 3rd Belt and Road Forum in Beijing. At stake are the BRI connectivity corridors that matter – across the Heartland, across Russia, plus the Maritime Silk Road and the Arctic Silk Road.

Then there’s the INSTC linking Russia, Iran and India – and by ancillary extension, the Gulf monarchies.

The geopolitical repercussions of Al-Aqsa Flood will speed up Russia, China and Iran’s interconnected geoeconomic and logistical connections, bypassing the Hegemon and its Empire of Bases. Increased trade and non-stop cargo movement are all about (good) business. On equal terms, with mutual respect - not exactly the War Party’s scenario for a destabilized West Asia.

Oh, the things that a slow-moving paragliding infantry overflying a wall can accelerate.

‘Operation Al-Aqsa Flood’ Day 4: “You wanted hell, you will get hell”, Israeli army chief says, calling Palestinians “human animals”

Please make sure these dispatches reach as many readers as possible. Share with kin, friends and workmates and ask them to do likewise.

‘Operation Al-Aqsa Flood’ Day 4: “You wanted hell, you will get hell”, Israeli army chief says, calling Palestinians “human animals”

Israel’s bombardment of the Gaza Strip entered its fourth day as the death toll inside Gaza surpassed 770, with more than 4,000 injuries as a result of airstrikes. Among the dead are at least 140 children, according to Palestinian health sources.

Key developments:

  • COGAT head Maj. Gen. Ghassan Alian issues genocidal threat to Palestinians: “Human animals must be treated as such. There will be no electricity and no water [in Gaza], there will only be destruction. You wanted hell, you will get hell.”
  • National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir announces plans to arm Jewish “civilian security teams” in the West Bank, Jerusalem, and Palestinian areas in ‘48
  • Israel bombs Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt for second time, after army spokesperson tells Gazans to flee to Egypt
  • Israeli army spokesperson says, “our focus is on (creating) damage, not on precision” in Gaza attack
  • UN: At least 200,000 Gazans have been internally displaced due to Israeli airstrikes
  • Hamas and Islamic Jihad claim to be holding 130 Israeli captives in Gaza
  • 124 Israeli soldiers, 41 police officers among dead in Israel
  • Israel claims to have killed 1,500 Palestinian fighters inside Israeli territory
  • Israel’s bombardment of the Gaza Strip entered its fourth day on Tuesday, October 10. Since Hamas fighters in Gaza launched their multi-prong offensive on Saturday, thousands have been killed.

The death toll inside Gaza surpassed 770, with more than 4,000 injuries as a result of airstrikes. Among the dead are at least 140 children, according to Palestinian health sources in Gaza. Over a dozen Palestinians have also been shot and killed in the West Bank, primarily during confrontations with Israeli forces.

      Palestinians Israelis
    Killed 705 900
    Injured >4,095 >2,616
CASUALITIES (UPDATED AT 8:00 AM ET 10/10/23)

Israeli airstrikes continued to pound Gaza between Monday and Tuesday. Among the areas hit was the densely populated al-Rimal neighborhood in Gaza City, a largely commercial and residential area with apartment buildings, businesses, and shops.

Two Palestinian journalists were killed in airstrikes early Tuesday morning. They were identified as Mohammed Subuh and Saeed Al-Taweel. According to the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, six Palestinian journalists have been killed, and two others are missing since Israel’s attack on the Gaza Strip began Saturday.

Video footage from Gaza has shown on at least one occasion Israeli airstrikes targeting Palestinian ambulances, though local reports indicate that ambulances and medical personnel were targeted on more than one occasion. According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza, Israeli airstrikes have also targeted seven hospitals and health centers, killing at least five healthcare personnel and injuring ten others.

In addition to the Palestinians killed in Israeli airstrikes on Gaza, Israel claims it has killed around 1,500 Palestinian fighters inside Israel, presumably those who broke through the Israeli barrier on Gaza’s border early Saturday morning. If the numbers are correct, that would bring the total death toll of Palestinians killed since Saturday to more than 2,270 people.

Meanwhile, the death toll in Israel from Hamas’ offensive, Operation Al-Aqsa Flood, surpassed 900. Of the 900 who were killed, the Israeli army has named 124 soldiers, while the police have listed 41 police officers. It is expected that in the coming days, the toll of Israeli military and security personnel who were killed in the operation will rise.

On Monday evening, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement that “we are just getting started” and that Israel’s current military operations in Gaza will “change the Middle East.”

“I ask that you stand steadfast because we are going to change the Middle East.”

Following what was one of the fiercest rounds of airstrikes on Gaza on Monday, Abu Obaida, spokesperson of Hamas’ military wing in Gaza, released a statement Monday night threatening to kill an Israeli hostage if Israel continued to target Palestinian civilians “without warning.”

Mondoweiss Gaza correspondent Tareq Hajjaj said that there was a noticeable decrease in Israeli airstrikes on the strip following Hamas’ threats but that airstrikes were continuing into Tuesday afternoon.

Rocketfire from Gaza into Israel continued on Tuesday, with Abu Obaida releasing a statement Tuesday afternoon warning of an impending rocket attack on the southern Israeli city of Ashkelon.

“In response to the enemy’s crime of displacing our people and forcing them to flee their homes in several areas of the Gaza Strip, we give the residents of the occupied city of Ashkelon a deadline to leave before 5 p.m.,” Abu Obaida said in a statement via Telegram.

Ground updates from Mondoweiss Gaza correspondent Tareq Hajjaj

I want to say that I’m somewhere safe, but I can’t. Every place in the Gaza Strip is on the edge of collapse. It looks like over 2.3 million people in Gaza are trapped in a cage, and Israel continues to pummel it day and night.

After my family and I evacuated our home, we settled into a place farther from the border areas, where the airstrikes are usually most intense, and where we thought we would be safe, but every place in Gaza has become a hotspot.

People in Gaza are all too familiar with Israeli terror. But this time is different. This time Israel wants to impose a complete blackout on Gaza and cut it off from the outside world.

This was made clear when Israel bombed the central company that provides internet to Gaza City. We immediately lost our internet connections in several places across the city. We can still make phone calls. I called many colleagues in Gaza, asking them about any place I could go to connect and keep reporting and sending stories about the unfolding situation. They said they didn’t have internet access either. All journalists are unable to report on what’s happening, and it’s intentional. A day in a war without the internet means we aren’t able to know what is happening around us, but it also means that the world can’t see any of Israel’s crimes.

I went down the street in the neighborhood we’re staying and asked people about any source of internet I could find. “Go home before they kill you. They killed four of your colleagues so far,” one neighbor told me.

I kept looking for internet in the area, but people were too busy with more important things, like getting enough food, bread, and milk for their children. The reason is that, in addition to water and electricity, Israel has also cut off Gaza’s food supply.

Markets are empty, and hundreds of people are lining up in front of bakeries, pharmacies, supermarkets, and small shops. But most of these shops are closed now, and most people who have not prepared for a war are unable to get enough food to meet their needs.

Israeli media has reported that Israel sent a message to Egypt, saying that if it tries to send aid to Gaza via the Rafah crossing with Egypt, Israel would target it. A serious food crisis is now beginning to unfold in Gaza.

I called a farmer in Rafah City, Jaber Abu Mallouh, who has large vegetable farms near the border, to ask about the situation. “On normal days the situation is hard for our farms, as they are on the borders, because we’re attacked by Israel. And now we’re in the middle of a war, and we won’t even think of going to our farms,” Abu Mallouh said.

“The situation is tough. We are bombed every second. Our homes are not safe. The UNRWA schools are not safe. The streets are not safe,” Abdullah Abed, a Gaza resident, said. “Yet we still have to try to go out to get food. We can’t stand watching our children go hungry. I went to the market despite the critical situation. I walk and think every second that I will be targeted. But if I don’t find what I need, and if we don’t get killed by Israel’s bombs, we may die of starvation. This is what Israel wants.”

Netanyahu coalition greenlights possible emergency government, Ben-Gvir arms civilian militias

The Israeli army claimed on Monday that it had “fully secured” and regained control over the border towns that were captured in full or in part by Palestinian fighters over the weekend, though reports from Palestinian media and Hamas officials indicated that gunfights in certain areas were still ongoing between Israeli forces and Palestinian fighters.

As of Tuesday morning, Al Jazeera quoted Israeli military sources as saying that there is a possibility that Hamas fighters “are still at large” in certain areas in southern Israel.

On Tuesday morning, Israeli military tanks and troops continued to accumulate in large numbers along the Gaza border, which has been fully evacuated of Israeli civilians. While Israel has not yet announced plans for a ground invasion, the build-up forces and the calling up of 360,000 reservists have many worried that further escalation is on the horizon.

After days of debate on forming an emergency unity government, all members of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s ruling coalition approved on Tuesday a proposed expansion of the government to include members of the opposition, Reuters reported. The approval moves Israel’s government one step closer to forming an emergency war government.

According to Israeli media reports, one reported condition to establishing an emergency unity government set forth by former Defense Minister Benny Gantz’s National Unity Party, was that any emergency war cabinet not include two members of Netanyahu’s governing coalition – far-right ministers Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben-Gvir.

On Tuesday afternoon, far-right Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir announced that his ministry would be purchasing 10,000 rifles in order to “arm civilian security teams,” specifically those in border towns close to the Gaza Strip, as well as illegal settlers in the West Bank, and in “mixed Jewish-Arab cities” in Israel.

Israeli media quoted Ben-Gvir as saying that 4,000 assault rifles have already been purchased from an Israeli weapons manufacturer and “will be distributed immediately.” “We will turn the world upside down so that towns are protected. I have given instructions for massively arming the civilian security teams,” Ben-Gvir said in a statement.

Ben-Gvir has been a staunch proponent of establishing a National Guard in Israel, which rights groups say would effectively serve as a “private militia” of armed, ideological, and nationalistic Jewish Israelis, serving under the discretion of Ben-Gvir, a settler and former terror-convict himself. Earlier this year, Netanyahu agreed to push forward plans for establishing a National Guard, in exchange for Ben-Gvir putting a temporary pause on controversial judicial reforms.

Meanwhile, in a threatening video message to Gazan residents and Hamas leadership, an Israeli army chief and head of the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), said “Kidnapping, abusing and murdering children, women and elderly people is not human. There is no justification for that. Hamas has turned into ISIS, and the residents of Gaza, instead of being appalled, are celebrating.”

“Human animals must be treated as such. There will be no electricity and no water [in Gaza], there will only be destruction. You wanted hell, you will get hell,” Maj. Gen. Ghassan Alian added.

Alien’s statements echoed similar dehumanizing remarks by Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant one day prior when he said in a statement that he “ordered a full siege on the Gaza Strip. No power, no food, no gas, everything is closed. We are fighting human animals and we act accordingly.”
