EDWARD J CURTIN—For we are all contradictions in our different ways, but the question remains how we might be happy in the midst of life’s struggles.  How to live with our contradictions, how to reconcile them.  How not to be so single-minded that we can’t say, “Happy New Year” and mean it simply in all its complexity.

Although I think Camus was slightly wrong to say “we must” imagine Sisyphus happy, I think we may.  Albert himself famously said that “In the midst of winter, I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer.”  This “invincible summer” is the love of life despite all the struggles we go through.

EDWARD CURTIN—Driven by a pure sense of guilt devoid of any sense of redemption in a capitalist materialist culture, we buy and buy, accumulate and accumulate, in the vain hope that such tangible “gifts” will bring a magic that we can possess.  Our exchange of gifts is a consumer culture’s parody of the true meaning of a gift: that gifts are given to be given away, to be passed around, like the peace pipe of native American Indian tribes.

This episode is especially illuminating in what it says about the news-obstructive work of corporatised drones, deadwood like NBC’s David Gregory, a man who, as Gleen Greenwald notes, never broke a story in his entire life (he is effectively a glorified “news reader” or “presenter”), yet who relies on “credentialism” to denigrate the right of independent media voices such as Greenwald to report on ruling class felonies.
