Voters in the U.S.A. live in fantasy and probably always will. No matter how obvious it is that the U.S. is an oligarchy, not a democracy, the ardent pipe dreams of a new face in the White House go to their heads every four years. It can only be explained by a combination of intellectual ignorance, the acceptance of propaganda, and the embrace of illusions.

An analogy is apropos. In the small town and vicinity where I live, there are about 10 pot shops where pipe dreams are dispensed. As The Platters sang long ago, “when your heart’s on fire, you must realize smoke gets in your eyes.” But few realize it.

Smoke? What smoke?

Quadrennially, this love affair with the presidential candidates burns hot and heavy despite their records, as if they were heart throbs of stage and screen, straight from Broadway or Hollywood deeply concerned for the public’s welfare.

Americans love actors, and the presidential candidates are of course actors, following the directions of the fat cats who produce their shows. As the grand opening of election day approaches, the supine public is aroused to a fanatical frenzy of excitement from its years’-long sleep by a mass media that spews out drivel to deceive. It could be said that what the media propagandists digest, the public eats.

Smoke and mirrors never fail as the electorate’s favorite billionaire-backed candidates – at this point in 2024 Trump and Kamala Harris (but don’t count on it) – spew lie after lie and the mass media faithfully promote the show as if it were an actual contest between good and evil, a grand movie. The acting is terrible, but the audience is so inflamed they can’t tell.

In the 2020 election between Joseph Biden and Donald Trump, more than 158 million ballots were cast, a record number that was two-thirds of estimated eligible voters. That was about seven percentage points higher than in 2016 when Trump and Hillary Clinton faced off. Each election was supposed to be the most important in “your lifetime.”

And as everyone knows, the country has gotten more prosperous, healthier and happier, and the world more peaceful, in those eight years of Republican and Democratic rule.

One can expect more of the same smoke this year as the excitement, titillation, and political lies build to a November 4^th crescendo. Illusions die hard, or to be more accurate – they do not die.

The Spectacle rolls on.

Although it might sound uppity, unless people read books that explain how the political and economic system is constructed and how it operates, they have no hope of understanding why the presidential elections are musical chairs played to the tune of Yankee Doodle Dandy. Podcasts and talks can be instructive when true, but they don’t stick like words on a page in a book that you have noted and can refer back to.

But the vast majority of people will not read such books because many can’t read or are too lazy or distracted to take the time to switch off digital media and the mainstream corporate press. It is only through slow meditative reading and study of the great analytic books about social structure, propaganda, history, capitalism, and political economy that a person can truly grasp the nature of the power elite’s domination of the U.S. government, the mass media, and the White House. A soupçon of differences between contestants for the presidency – superficial makeup – is enough to have those caught in the spectacle get worked up into a hot lather of excitement for candidates chosen by the billionaires. It is an aspect of the mania for celebrity culture.

One cannot simply imbibe the daily mass media, listen to talking heads, or read books recommended and promoted by The New York Times or some prize committee such as the Booker or Pulitzer prizes. (see the NYT’s Best Sellers here – as if #5 could be as “best” as #1). It is no secret that the reading public has been shrinking for years as literacy has waned dramatically. This is not an accident as the internet, cell phones, and the online life have been pushed by the authorities at every level, including throughout the school system. (I am not arguing that the voters saw through the electoral charade in the past because the level of cultural literacy was higher.)

Today, a walk into any local library throughout the country will confirm the sad state of what even those who read books are reading. The new fiction shelves are filled with books with candy-colored sensationalized covers that evoke bodice-ripping books of old now updated to sound more serious by telling stories of orphans on European trains during WW II, mysterious murders, separated twins, equally evil Nazis and Russians on the prowl, childhood trauma, unfaithful men, etc. All seemingly NY Times bestsellers, together with the “non-fiction” books within which you would search a long time on the shelves to find a radical critique of the American political system and its propaganda arms.

This issue of voting and literacy is connected to another key matter. The American public as a whole does not much care to follow foreign policy and military issues. That is an understatement. Once the military draft was ended in January 1973, the public lost interest in who was being killed in America’s wars. Let foreigners be damned was the unspoken assumption. It was a stroke of genius by the military-industrial-political complex, for politics has always been about what’s in it for us, and when the military is voluntary and Americans are dying in smaller numbers, people are indifferent to the killing.

this is more than China, Russia, India, Saudi Arabia, the U.K., Germany, France, South Korea, and Japan combined.

As everyone knows:

The U.S. is defending itself in Syria where its troops illegally occupy the oilfields in the northeast.
It is defending itself helping Israel slaughter Palestinians and supporting an expanded Middle Eastern war.
It is defending itself by attacking Russia via Ukraine and leading the world to nuclear war.
It is defending itself by provoking China in the South China Sea.
It is defending itself all over the world with special forces and military bases everywhere because everyone is out to get us.
It is defending itself always far, far away from its own shores.

Everyone knows that’s how it goes.

This charade is comical but accepted by so many, and as the Halloween season in a presidential election year in the U.S.A. approaches, it becomes most clear. It’s always a trick until four years elapses and the next poisoned candy treat is offered.

Get to the polls. Your life depends on it!

But there is a big price to be paid – a lesson always too late for the learning – for going to the masquerade ball. Yet when smoke gets in your eyes . . . ah, such a exciting time it is.

“Do you not know there comes a midnight hour when everyone has to throw off his mask?” warned Søren Kierkegaard.

“Do you believe that life will always let itself be mocked?

Do you think you can slip away a little before midnight in order to avoid this?

Or are you not terrified by it?”

Media Scorn Gaza Protesters for Recognizing Corporate Reporters Aren’t Their Friends

An emerging complaint the corporate media have against the nationwide—and now international—peace encampments is that many student protesters won’t speak to them. The problem, pundits and reporters say, is that these encampments have designated media spokespeople, and other protesters often keep their mouths shut to the press.

Peggy Noonan (Wall Street Journal, 5/2/24), based, apparently, on talking to no protesters, concluded that “they weren’t a compassionate group. They weren’t for anything, they were against something: the Israeli state, which they’d like to see disappear, and those who support it.”

The media's obnoxious bias in this issue can be easily gleaned from the celebratory tone they use to report on the destruction of the protesters' encampments.

Conservative pundit Peggy Noonan (Wall Street Journal, 5/2/24) said of her trip to the Columbia University encampment:

I was at Columbia hours before the police came in and liberated Hamilton Hall from its occupiers. Unlike protesters of the past, who were usually eager to share with others what they thought and why, these demonstrators would generally not speak or make eye contact with members of the press, or, as they say, “corporate media.”

I was on a bench taking notes as a group of young women, all in sunglasses, masks and kaffiyehs, walked by. “Friends, please come say hello and tell me what you think,” I called. They marched past, not making eye contact, save one, a beautiful girl of about 20. “I’m not trained,” she said. Which is what they’re instructed to say to corporate-media representatives who will twist your words. “I’m barely trained, you’re safe,” I called, and she laughed and half-halted. But her friends gave her a look and she conformed.

Peter Baker (Twitter, 5/4/24), the chief White House correspondent for the New York Times, supportively amplified the former Ronald Reagan speechwriter’s claim, saying the protests are “not about actually explaining your cause or trying to engage journalists who are there to listen.”

A reporter for KTLA (4/29/24) complained that his news team was not granted access to the encampment at UCLA, and Fox News (4/30/24) had a similar complaint about the New York University protest:

Fox News Digital was told that the outlet was not allowed inside, and only student press could access the gated lawn. A local ABC team and several independent reporters were also denied. However, Fox News Digital witnessed a documentary crew and a reporter from Al Jazeerareporting inside the area.

One has to wonder: What could make activists suspect that the network that produced “Anti-Israel Agitators: Signs of ‘Foreign Assistance’ Emerge in Columbia, NYU Unrest” (4/26/24), “Pressure Builds for Colleges to Close or Shut Down Anti-Israel Encampments Amid Death Threats Toward Jews” (4/26/24) and “Ivy League Anti-Israel Agitators’ Protests Spiral Into ‘Actual Terror Organization,’ Professor Warns” (4/21/24) wouldn’t give them a fair shake?

Organized structure

A New York Times news report (5/2/24) ties protests to the US’s official enemies, despite “little evidence—at least so far—that the countries have provided material or organizational support to the protests.”

With the current media strategy, Baker and Noonan really don’t have to wonder what the messages are: The encampments want their campuses to divest from Israel, and now students are protesting their administrations and the police violence against free speech and assembly. They are not entitled to the time of every individual protester.

It’s also all too easy for corporate reporters or right-wing commentators to find one loose cannon at a protest who can be prompted to go off-message during an interview, giving media outlets the ability to paint protesters generally as unhinged and ignorant. The fact that the Gaza encampment protesters have such a structure in place is a sign of political maturity, because they have found a way to keep the message simple and unified.

“The college kids are showing a precocious message discipline to reporters hostile to the substance of their protest,” Chase Madar, a New York University adjunct instructor, told FAIR.

Insinuating illiberalism

Baker and Noonan don’t express alarm that student reporters covering the protests have been subjected to extreme violence by the police (CNN, 5/2/24, 5/2/24), a very real form of state censorship. Nevertheless, Noonan and Baker insinuate that an aversion to speak to the corporate press signifies the movement’s illiberalism.

If anything, what Baker and Noonan are lamenting is that the discipline of the students is making it harder for corporate media to misrepresent, ridicule and embarrass students who are protesting the US-backed genocide of Palestinians in Gaza. They’re telling on themselves.

The constant rain of US propaganda has rendered comatose even the survival instinct of most Americans.

Introduction

I have read Robert F. Kennedy Jr’s new book, “The Wuhan Cover-Up and the Terrifying Bioweapons Arm Race”. It is a masterpiece of research, investigation, connecting the dots, and contextualizing for what is probably modern humanity’s most pressing issue. While Kennedy and I disagree on many key points, I cannot underestimate how important this book is in informing you about the role bioweapons play in modern politics, geopolitics, economics and war.

I am a co-founder of the Bioweapon Truth Commission and the curator of its Global Online Library. Yet, I learned so much from this book that it left my jaw hanging. As I was reading Kennedy’s book, I kept thinking two things. First, I can’t believe this man is running for president of the United States and will unfortunately not get elected. And secondly, if I ever needed a trial lawyer, he would be the one I’d like to have.

I have been subscribing to Kennedy’s newsletter and website, the Children’s Health Defense (https://childrenshealthdefense.org/), which has thankfully enhanced my arc of awareness that I never knew before, about vaccines and corrupt medical practices, especially since the advent of Western mRNA genetic modification shots (https://chinarising.puntopress.com/2020/03/07/its-all-here-the-china-rising-radio-sinoland-covid-19-chemical-and-bioweapon-file-film-and-tape-library/). This new book really ties together the nexus between vaccines, Big Pharma, the military, and the CIA.

“The Wuhan Cover-Up and the Terrifying Bioweapons Arm Race”, coupled with Robert F. Kennedy Jr’s previous book, “The Real Anthony Fauci: Bill Gates, Big Pharma, and the Global War on Democracy and Public Health”, are a one-two punch to really explain so much of what is going on behind our headlines today (https://www.amazon.com/stores/Robert-F.-Kennedy-Jr./author/B09KQXYQ9Y). I have spent many hours poring over “The Wuhan Cover-Up” and many more writing this book review. I have meticulously annotated it and looked up scores of references that are in the back of the book. It has well over 2,000 references. I can only think of one other author who writes investigative books like this that are so thoroughly researched, and that is John Potash, whom I have had the pleasure of interviewing, and among many US government assassinations and subterfuge, covers RFK Jr’s father and uncle (www.chinarising.puntopress.com/search/?q=potash).

Without further ado, I strongly encourage everybody to read Robert F. Kennedy Jr’s last two books, “The Real Anthony Fauci” and “The Wuhan Cover-Up”. They will open your eyes to the sordid, corrupt and satanic Western underworld that is controlling much of humanity and trying to drive us into a totalitarian dystopia.

After reading them, hopefully it will give you and all of us ammunition to try to put a stop to the potential destruction of the human race. It is that important.

Part One: The Road to Wuhan; JJB: This is an excellent summary table of chemical and biological weapon use around the world in the 20^th century. We can add genocidal Western atomic (chemical) warfare with the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Yet, there is a clear difference between the USA versus USSR/Russia and China. The latter two have been repeatedly attacked with BW and chemical weapons (CW) by the prior, since 1945. There is no evidence that the latter have used their BW programs for offensive warfare. America has hundreds of BW development labs on every continent except Antarctica and surrounds the latter with them. Russia and China have no BW labs outside their boundaries.

Russia and China are proof that countries can develop BW-CW to know what to expect when attacked with germ warfare, but not use them on others. The USA and its vassals have been and continue to use BW and CW on their own citizens and all of their perceived enemies across the planet.

In December of 2007, Dr. Baric published an extraordinarily candid paper that explained his purpose in conducting such experiments and that set the stage for all future gain-of-function research. Thanks to Anthony Fauci, Dr. Baric is one of the top recipients of NIH funding. Some 200 grants from NIAID and NIH and hundreds of papers in his curriculum vitae have helped Dr. Baric earn his unofficial title as the “Godfather of Weaponized Viruses” and the world’s leading authority on coronaviruses.

Following Shiro Ishii’s strategy, the virology community and its government funders routinely claim that the purpose of gain-of-function science is to predict natural spillovers and to develop countermeasures vaccines. But Dr. Baric’s 2007 article unabashedly celebrates the recent revolutions in synthetic biology, genetic engineering, and cloning technologies as potential boons to a brave new era in bioweapons development. In contrast to his later statements, the Dr. Baric of 2007 adopted a refreshing frankness about the martial purpose of his gain-of-function dabbling. While Baric’s article periodically invokes the obligatory propaganda tropes that mask GOF as purely defensive or benevolent science, they seem like window dressing to an otherwise naked and giddy appeal to an audience of potential funders principally committed to developing bioweapons.

Dr. Baric begins by warning that traditional biodefense strategies are focused on the “small group of plant, animal, and human pathogens with bioweapons potential that occur in nature” and “counterterrorism think tanks anticipate that these particular threats will ameliorate over the next decade because of medical countermeasures, (e.g., drugs, vaccines, diagnostics)”. After suggesting Mother Nature has little more to offer in the way of weapons, Baric then proclaims that advances in genetic engineering and synthetic biology can be used to create new biological weapons able to evade these traditional medical defenses. He urges the bioweapons cartel to waste no time launching a new arms race by exploiting these new GOF technologies. “The technology to synthetically reconstruct genomes is fairly straightforward and will be used, if not by the United States, then by other Nations throughout the world. Given Baric’s central role in the GOF arena, his reflections lend a sinister context to the entire field of study.

In the years after Baric published this paper, bioweapons enthusiasts began “assessing the potential for viral spillover”, the new euphemism for bioweapons research and development. Some version of this core phrase suddenly became a ubiquitous contrivance for concealing bioweapons science in dozens of NIH, USAID, and NSF grant applications.

In the years leading up to his ominous 2007 paper, Baric had explored numerous techniques for coaxing animal viruses to become more deadly and to infect humans. All of these were inherently limited by the known difficulties of culturing coronaviruses. In the report above, China contributed in US$28,719,905 out of a total Assessed Contributions = $246,763,095, or 11.6%. However, this is only 20% of the total WHO budget, so China’s total contributions to WHO are only 2.3%.

It’s worth repeating that Gates was heavily invested in the pharmaceutical companies that benefited from the rise in “Pandemic Preparedness and Response”, that his quasi-governmental organizations, including CEPI, advocated. Gates, whose investment strategy is often referred to as “philanthrocapitalism”, boasts that his vaccine enterprise is the best investment I’ve ever made, with his $10 billion investment yielding “$200 billion in social and economic benefits”.

My closing comments and observations

I again congratulate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. for putting this book together. It is a monument to fine research, investigation and thorough contextualization.

I learned so much. It was not just Big Pharma and DOD, but the CIA was on board the BW train from day one and running the show. Operation Paperclip morphed into DARPA. The US’s BW-CW attacks on American citizens and allies are magnitudes more than I could previously show. Using UV light and radiation, the US was already weaponizing germs in the 1960s and doing reverse genetic engineering in the early 1980s, including coronaviruses. COVID-19 has been in the pipeline for a very long time (https://chinarising.puntopress.com/2021/09/07/we-made-sars-and-we-patented-it-on-19-4-2002-before-there-was-any-alleged-outbreak-in-asia-david-e-martin-testifies-at-the-german-corona-inquiry-committee-july-9th-2021-avtran/).

The total psychopathy of actors like Anthony Fauci (NIAID), Frances Collins (NIH), Ralph Baric (UNC), Peter Daszak (EcoHealth Alliance) and Jeremy Farrar (Wellcome Trust) has caused the death, illness and handicapping of millions of innocent people around the world, ongoing. I knew Bill Gates was a malevolent force on the international scene, but did not know how much he controls the World Health Organization, CEPI and Gavi. I also learned that Jeremy Farrar and the Wellcome Trust are the British doppelgangers of Bill Gates and his billion-dollar foundation, and equally as evil and genocidal.

These war criminals and their many acolytes across the West should be tried and hanged in Nuremberg 2.0.

BW labs in the USA, and we can assume elsewhere, have leaks on an almost daily basis. How many people get sick or die and we are not even aware of it? How many leaks are intentional, for testing purposes? The West has no qualms about using their citizens as unaware lab rats and guinea pigs.

I am shocked how mainstream and encouraged bioweapon research is in leading universities and institutions around the world. It’s banal that a Nobel Prize winner weaponizes germs. Research journals are full of thousands of studies that are blatant recipes to wipe out the human race, livestock and poultry, and apparently that is A-OK.

I will nevermore believe anything that science journalism and research journals print. They have become completely prostituted to Big Pharma and CIA/DOD. The Chinese, seeing how the West does this, and to have a place at the research table, has now joined in the pay-for-publishing corruption. Can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.

There are no consequences, no punishment, no shame for the West’s BW-vaccine criminals against humanity. Led by the USA, the West has over 300 germ warfare labs on every continent, except Antarctica and thousands more back home, one not far from where you live. It compromises and corrupts governments around the world, because everybody wants to have inside access, in hopes of protecting themselves.

China is no different. As the most BW-CW attacked country in the 20^th-21^stcentury, they hitched their wagon to the Western BW train, after the US’s SARS attack on China in 2003. Ralph Baric, Dr. COVIDmaker himself was already reaching out to the Chinese, having just perfected his now infamous reverse genetic engineering, i.e., weaponization of coronaviruses. In 2008, Fauci, Baric and Daszak started pouring BW research money and knowhow into China, and the Chinese, desperate to have inside access to their attackers’ technology, along with international virology respectability, were happy to be students.

It would be like the USA paying Chinese scientists in the 1950s to work and learn how to make the atom bomb in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Of course we accept! Until 2012, the question must be asked, why did Fauci, Baric and Daszak commit treason against the West? Was the CIA already calling the shots and demanding in-country access to spy on the Chinese?

Because that is what happened in 2012, when the CIA’s spy network in China got wiped out. At this point, for sure the CIA was pushing their asset, Peter Daszak to spare no time and expense to be in China, gathering intelligence on China’s progress in bioweapons, all taught to them by Daszak and Baric, paid for by Fauci. While Daszak is surely CIA, Baric seems to be beholden to the US military. Ditto Fauci, as NIH is controlled by the Pentagon.

RFK, Jr. makes a good case that COVID-19 was released by the Wuhan Institute for Virology (WIV), in the autumn of 2019. However, Baba Beijing’s original charge that it was released by the 300+ US soldiers attending the World Military Games (WMG) there is, chronology-wise, a more plausible story. In any case, Spain announced that it had found COVID-19 in-country no later than March, 2019, six months before the WMG (https://web.ub.edu/en/web/actualitat/w/sars-cov-2-detected-in-waste-waters-in-barcelona-on-march-12-2019), and was detecting unusual respiratory ailments a year before that. More evidence of respiratory illnesses and deaths right around Fort Detrick in the spring and summer of 2019 is also extremely suspicious, especially since the CDC took the dramatic step of shutting down Fort Detrick’s BW work that summer, for unacceptable handling of germs.

Thus, we have two possible leaks, WIV and Fort Detrick, with confirmations in Spain and Italy, well before the world-infamous outbreak in Wuhan in November 2019.

RFK, Jr. goes to great lengths to blame China for the cover-up of COVID-19’s origins. My careful review of the evidence provided in his book clearly shows that Western actors were the leaders and teachers. The Chinese were subordinate followers and students. It was Western actors who reached out to the Chinese and eagerly gave them all the secrets of BW dark arts, only getting some bat genomes and desperate CIA espionage access inside China in return.

I did find one glaring bad source that is a key accusation in the book,

Yet, there is a clear difference between the USA versus USSR/Russia and China. The latter two have been repeatedly attacked with BW and chemical weapons (CW) by the prior, since 1945. There is no evidence that the latter have used their BW programs for offensive warfare. America has hundreds of BW development labs on every continent except Antarctica and surrounds these two rivals with them. Russia and China have no BW labs outside their boundaries.

This helps explain China’s 24/7 vigilance against BW attacks, starting in 1937 with the Japanese.

Kennedy seems to have his own pangs of doubt about the book’s thrust,

Was Kennedy’s book vetted and edited by the CIA/DOD? It would not be the first time, nor will it be the last, that books about intelligence and military need to be “verified” for publication approval. His frank admission above suggests he’s not entirely comfortable with the book’s finger pointing.

The CIA is in Kennedy’s life. RFK, Jr.’s presidential campaign manager is a former CIA spy, none other than his daughter-in-law, Amaryllis Fox (https://edwardcurtin.com/the-cia-does-soulful-work/). That’s closer than six degrees of separation. The CIA is like the Mafia. Once you are a part of the family, you can never leave.

That is why I am finishing this book review with the strong impression that “The Wuhan Cover-Up” is a CIA/DOD limited hangout. This means admitting the US’s extensive BW war crimes in an historical way, providing thousands of references to overwhelm readers, yet deftly deflecting all of it onto China. This starts with the book’s title and cover, looking like China’s flag, the stars replaced with coronaviruses, which is what 99% of them will see and remember, as well as the many role reversals in the text, turning it all around on the Chinese, when the evidence clearly shows that the Chinese were always the students and subordinate subcontractors.

The accurate title would be, “The CIA/DOD/Big Pharma Cover-Up”, but that is not how psyops works. While a fabulous BW research resource, with its thousands of references – which I will continue to consult for the Bioweapon Truth Commission’s Global Online Library – the CIA can chalk up this book as very successful Yellow Peril propaganda.

To this day, the Chinese continue to get blamed for the book’s subtitle, “The Terrifying Bioweapons Arms Race”. This, while Fauci, Baric and Daszak continue to make millions committing crimes against humanity, and hey – who has ever heard of the CIA, Pentagon and Big Pharma working together on bioweapons?

“The World As It Was”: A Masterly Documentary Film

Here’s a film about the 1950s – “The World As It Was” – that will tell you a great deal about life in the U.S.A. today, while disabusing anyone of the notion that nostalgia for that mephitic decade is in order, for it was a time when “democracy” tended toward totalitarianism. In doing so, it sowed the bitter fruit that is poisoning us today. Without understanding the long-standing effects of those years, it is impossible to grasp the deepest dimensions of our current nightmare. Chapter One of the documentary series, Four Died Trying, directed by John Kirby and produced by Libby Handros, appropriately subtitled: “To see where we are, look where we’ve been,” does that brilliantly.

Chapter One – “The World As It Was” – is about the 1950s, the rise of the Cold War with its propaganda, McCarthyism, the development of the military-industrial complex, the CIA, red-baiting, betrayals, blacklists, the abrogation of civil rights, censorship, and the ever present fear of nuclear war and the promotion of fallout shelters that set the stage for the killing fields of the 1960s and the CIA’s ruthless machinations.

One could say that the 1950s were the Foundation of Fear upon which the horrors of the 1960s were built, and that now we are reaping the flowers of evil that have sprung up everywhere we look because the evils of those decades have never been adequately addressed.

The film opens with President Eisenhower delivering his famous Farewell Address, warning about the growing power of the military-industrial complex. It is a short and powerful speech, concealing not a smidgen of hypocrisy since it must not have been Eisenhower who presided for eight years from 1953-19661 as this complex grew and grew and he poured 2 billion dollars in weapons and aid and a thousand military advisers to the ruthless and corrupt Vietnamese dictator Ngô Dinh Diêm, while saying he was “an example for people everywhere who hate tyranny and love freedom.” His speech, while still good, reminds me of all those who spend their careers quiet as church mice as the wars and assassinations rage on only to find their voices in opposition once they retire and collect their pensions.

In response to Eisenhower’s speech, some of which we hear, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. – one of a hundred interviews done for this series over six years – says that Eisenhower’s speech “is probably today in retrospect the most important speech in American history.” While that is debatable (I would pick JFK’s American University speech), he rightly emphasizes the importance of Ike’s speech and the fact that his uncle, President Kennedy, fought against the military-industrial complex handed him by Eisenhower. This is important, for although JFK did get elected emphasizing the Cold War rhetoric of a non-existent missile gap between the U.S. A. and the Soviet Union, he very quickly changed, having been betrayed by Allen Dulles and the CIA regarding the Bay of Pigs, the assassination of Patrice Lumumba, Vietnam, Laos, etc. The military brass quickly came to hate Kennedy, a naval war hero from World War II. His three year transformation into a great peacemaker – and therefore his assassination by the CIA and its friends – is a story many still would like to squelch. This documentary series will prevent that.

Those who control our present and wish to control our future are hard at work today trying to control our past and they will therefore hate this truthful film that is a powerful antidote to their attempted amnesia. In thirty-nine sobering and entertaining minutes (with emphasis on both words), “The World As It Was” illuminates a period in U.S. history that is often dismissed as the staid and boring 1950s but was in fact when the infrastructure for today’s censorship, chaos, and fear were laid. It was not the era, as a baseball movie about Jimmy Piersall and his depression from 1957 put it, when “Fear Strikes Out,” but the time when fear burrowed very deep into the American psyche and anxiety became a weapon of state. Is it any wonder that today could be called “the age of depression, fear, anxiety, and pill popping”?

It is interesting to note that Eisenhower’s warning also contained an admonition to beware the growth of unchecked science, technology, and a future when computers would replace blackboards. If he were still alive, he would no doubt not recognize the country controlled by what former CIA analyst Ray McGovern calls the Military-Industrial-Congressional-Intelligence-Media-Academia-Think-Tank complex (MICIMATT). This vast computer-networked monster makes all the warnings about the 1950s snooping, informing, and controlling activities of government agencies seem like child’s play. They can’t open snail mail now when few send any, but reading computer messages barely necessitates a finger’s movement, or, as Edward Snowden continues to warn, the entire electronic phone system is open sesame for government controllers. Cell phones acting as cells. Blackboards are gone but so is privacy. The 1950s’ government snooping is pure nostalgia now. We are through the looking glass.

As then, so today. Oliver Stone talks about how in those days the constant refrain was “the Russians are coming” and how his father, a Republican stockbroker, told him that “the Russians are inside the country.” Fear was everywhere, all induced by anti-communist propaganda aimed at controlling the American people. Stone is still fighting against the Russia bogeyman stories, while today we are told again and again that the Russians are still coming. We can only assume they are very slow.

Aside from RFK, Jr. and Oliver Stone, in this episode we hear from NYU Professor Mark Crispin Miller, Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, the screenwriter Zachary Sklar, et al. Because the film is so ingeniously crafted, many of the most powerful voices – for and against the government repression and fear mongering – are those from newsreels and television shows that are artfully spliced between the commentaries of the aforementioned people. For example, to see and hear FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover rant about communists under every bed and to juxtapose that with the calm words of the filmmaker Dalton Trumbo, blackballed as one of the so-called Hollywood Ten, is an exercise in distinguishing sanity from insanity.

To this is added music, advertisements, movie clips, and jingles from the 1950s culture that place the viewer back in time to feel and absorb the “vibes,” as it were, of those days. Like any era, it was complicated, but the overriding message from the fifties was not about mom making tuna noodle casserole but was that there were commie traitors everywhere throughout society and that every citizen’s obligation was to turn them in, even if that meant turning yourself or your parents in. Children were taught to get under their desks when the sirens sounded, for they were safe places when the Commie Nukes start coming in. Civil Defense drills screeched this fear into your every fiber. In April 1957 the Army Air Defense Command announced that new Nike Hercules missiles with atomic warheads would shortly be installed around New York City, Boston, Providence, etc. to replace conventional warheads. A spokesman added that these nuclear warheads posed no danger and that if the missiles were used, fallout would be “negligible.” Of course.

Let me use an anecdote from pop culture that I think sums this up this sick game of fear and distrust – paranoia. My parents were on a game show in the fall of 1957 called “Do You Trust Your Wife?” hosted by Johnny Carson. By the summer of 1958 the show’s title was changed to “Who Do you Trust?” I used to joke that Hoover or Senator Joseph McCarthy was behind the change and their English grammar was atrocious, but I realize it was probably some fearful lackeys in the television industry.

Professor Miller, an expert in propaganda, narrates quite a bit of “The World As It Was” and does so admirably. He correctly points out that to describe the 1950s as the era of McCarthyism is a misnomer, for doing so “let’s the whole system off the hook.” It was the entire government apparatus that promoted a vast repression based on fear whose aim was to create meek, deferential, and obedient people afraid of their own shadows.

He points out that the basis for all this was established by President Truman in 1947 with his Executive Order 9835 that required loyalty oaths to root out communists in the federal government. Six months later the CIA was founded and the country was off to the Cold War races with its anti-communist hysteria and the institutionalization of a militarized society.

The Red Menace, nuclear extinction, and the need to root out those traitors who were conspiring to overthrow the U.S. government by force were pounded into people’s minds. Not only were these traitors in the government, but in the schools and colleges, the labor and racial equality movements – more or less everywhere. Whom could you trust? No one, not even yourself. While McCarthy was eventually censored for going too far when Joseph Welch accused him of having no decency during the 1954 Army-McCarthy hearings, he accomplished the goal of injecting his paranoic poison into the social bloodstream where it remains today, part of the political structure shared by both major parties.

But hope arose, as the film concludes, when JFK was elected in 1960 and in his first week in office went to the theater to see the blackballed screenwriter’s Dalton Trumble’s adaptation of Howard Fast’s novel, Spartacus, about a slave revolt in ancient Rome. Fast was also blacklisted and wrote the novel secretly. As RFK, Jr. says, this was a symbolic turning point when this was reported on the front page of The New York Times.

Yes, today we are told that the Russians are still coming. The bad old days are back. But so also is the slaves’ rebellion.

Four Died Trying is a documentary series that is part of this rebellion. Chapter One, “The World As It Was” shines a very bright light on disturbing U.S. history. It shows where we have been in order to help us see where we are. Don’t miss it.
